Tomlinson papers, the E.H. Tomlinson and Son Real Estate Company was established in 1902. The company was run by E.H. Tomlinson, a licensed real estate broker, and was located in Jacksonville Florida. The real estate firm dealt largely with pine and cypress timber lands and colonization tracts but also handled saw mill tracts, commercial property, cattle ranches, turpentine farms, orange groves, and private property. The majority of the real estate properties handled by the Tomlinson's were from Florida, although clients from as far as Seattle, Washington and Grand Rapids, Michigan were not unusual.\n Erasmus H. Tomlinson died in September of 1925 and the real estate company was taken over by his son, Erasmus D. (Ras). Ras's daughter Jean provided some assistance with the family business until her marriage to Carlyle Wright in the 1940's. No information on Ras's retirement or what became of the business after his death could be found.","Processed by Mary Pettengill in Spring-Summer 2008.","The collection consists of materials of the E.H. Tomlinson and Son Real Estate Company from 1893-1958. The series include client records, correspondence, day books, maps, blueprints, and scrapbooks. Contained in these series are family correspondence, financial records, legal documents, deeds, contracts, reports, photographs, newspaper clippings, postcards, and pamphlets.\n The collection documents the activities of the E.H. Tomlinson and Son Real Estate Company during the last decade of the Nineteenth Century and the first half of the Twentieth Century. The collection contains considerable business and family correspondence that gives a first hand account of Florida real estate activities in the first half of the Twentieth Century. Graduating from The College of William and Mary in 1940 with a Bachelor's of Science in Botany, he received his Masters in Aquatic Biology from The University of Virginia in 1943 and his PhD in Biology from Texas A and M University in 1954. Menzel's career began as a research assistant at the Virginia Fisheries Lab. He also spent much of his early career as an educator at Texas A and M University, where he held such titles as Assistant Biologist, Biologist for the Texas A and M Research Foundation, and Assistant Professor. In 1954, Menzel became assistant professor for the department of Marine Biology at Florida State University (FSU). Menzel invested a great deal of his work in researching and documenting marine life as a biology instructor at the FSU Gulf Coast Research Lab at Turkey Point, and was one of the leading educators instrumental in the establishment of the FSU Oceanography Department. Menzel served as professor in this department from 1970-1985. He died in 1989.","The Menzel Collection originally was originally a library for marine researchers at the Florida State University Marine Lab at Turkey Point, Florida.","Portions of collection available online?: No","The Menzel Collection was processed from June 2009-February 2010.","The Menzel Collection consists of over 12,000 reprints, journal articles, scholarly papers, scientific reports, and bulletins that focus on all aspects of marine life in the United States. Some of the most prominent subjects in the collection are reprints of sources that pertain to fisheries, marine fauna, and several types of fish, marine arthropods, and mollusca. Several prominent authors frequently cited in the collection are Gordon Gunter and Clark Hubbs, both renowned marine biologists.","Copyright has not been transferred to the Florida State University Libraries","All requests for permission to quote, publish, broadcast or otherwise reproduce from manuscripts must be submitted in writing to the Associate Dean for Special Collections and Archives. His father was a prominent local businessman, and Andy attended private schools in Cincinnati as well as Phillips Academy in Andover, Massachusetts. Ireland graduated with a degree in business from Yale University in 1952 and completed graduate studies at Columbia University in New York in 1954.\nImmediately after graduating from Columbia, Andy Ireland relocated to Jacksonville, Florida, where secured employment with Barnett National Bank. At Barnett, Ireland worked in lending before getting the opportunity to travel the state as a representative of the bank, where he was able to meet many other people in Florida's business and banking communities. In the fall of 1961 he was offered a job as a senior vice-president of a bank in Fort Lauderdale. Shortly after this, he was presented with an opportunity to buy into the American National Bank in Winter Haven. He became president of the bank, and was active in the Winter Haven community. He was responsible for convincing the Boston Red Sox to use Winter Haven as their spring training home. He was elected to the Winter Haven City Commission in 1966. From 1968-70, Ireland served as a member of the Federal Reserve Bank , Jacksonville branch. In 1972 Andy Ireland ran in a special election for the Florida Senate, but was defeated in the runoff by Curtis Peterson. In 1976, U.S. Congressman James A. Haley (D-FL), of the 8th Congressional District, announced that he was retiring after serving in congress for twentythree years. Andy Ireland entered the Democratic primary for this open seat and was subsequently elected. Andy Ireland assumed office in January, 1977 and was assigned to the House International Relations Committee. He had initially been chosen to serve on the Banking Committee, but wanted to broaden his experience and not give the impression that he hadbeen elected to help banks. Ireland was a friend of House Speaker Thomas P. \"Tip\" O'Neil, and was appointed as a Democratic Whip. In subsequent years, Congressman Ireland served on the House Armed Services Committee and House Select Committee on Intelligence. In 1984 Andy Ireland announced that he would run for reelection as a member of the Republican Party. He was a conservative Democrat and no longer felt that the party\naccurately reflected his views. He served the remainder of his time in congress as a Republican. In 1992, Andy Ireland decided not to seek reelection. He retired from the congress and has since worked as a consultant.","Please Note that Congressman Ireland's staff changed \"Press Clippings\" to \"Media Reports\" in August of 1986. A Media Report contains newspaper clippings with additional analysis. Please refer to Boxes 69-76 for the subsequent Media Reports.
