He is best known for his murals in various communities across the United States, including the Sistrunk Boulevard \"Wall of History\" mural in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. ","He was born in Harlem, New York and graduated from the Art Career School of Commercial Illustration and then attended the Brooklyn Museum of Fine Art. After serving in the United States Army, he worked as a medical illustrator for the V.A. Medical Center in Brooklyn for 23 years.","Mills moved to Fort Lauderdale, Florida in 1985 and became an adjunct professor at the New World School of the Arts in Miami and also taught at the Broward Art Guild and the Coral Springs Museum of Art. The African American Research Library and Cultural Center exhibited his paintings in April 2003, June 2004, and December 2005. In 2009, the Jim Moran Foundation honored him as an African-American Achiever for his six decades of painting and his focus on the African-American experience. He died in Pembroke Pines, Florida on October 20, 2009. Before he was inducted in 1939, Burrows received four years of naval ROTC training at the University of Minnesota. Onboard the California and the Tennessee, he served as a gun division officer, a secondary battery officer, an air defense officer, and an officer-of-the-deck. During his time in the Navy, Burrows participated in 14 major operations in the Pacific Theater. He was awarded a Citation Ribbon, and his ship, the USS Tennessee, received a Navy Unit Citation. After the war, he was released to inactive duty with the rank of naval lieutenant. The collection includes a veteran's questionnaire and a manuscript. Photographs, and Series II. Postcards.","Charles G. Rodes, Sr. (1874-1967) was a seed merchant and farmer in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. He was born on October 12, 1874 in West Virginia and had ten siblings. He married Mozelle Rodes (1876-1955) and moved to Fort Lauderdale in 1907. Mr. and Mrs. Rodes had one son, Charles G. Rodes, Jr. (1903-1985) who worked in real estate and owned the Rodes Hotel in Fort Lauderdale. In 1925, Charles Rodes, Sr. travelled with fifty-two of his extended family members on a cross-country trip to California and the Western coast.","The Charles Rodes Jr. Collection received file level processing.
