The Hartzogs were from early Bethlehem, Pennsylvania area. Marriage joined the Worsley family from Sweden with the Hartzogs at the turn of the twentieth century. Wieners emigrated from Germany in the mid-nineteenth century to marry into the Wussow and Blatz families of Milwaukee, Wisconsin. The families documented their rise in American business and as strong members of their communities. Herbert J. Hartzog practiced law before the Supreme Court of Pennslyvania. Carl Worsley and Emil Wiener established upscale furniture manufacturing businesses in Pennslyvania and Wisconsin respectively. Their children attended prominent schools including Dartmouth, Wellesley and Pine Manor during the 1930's.\n \nThe families kept journals of their travels in Europe during 1933 just before the advent of World War II providing a last glimpse of the \"old\" Europe before the devastating events of the war. During World War II, John Paul Wiener and his young bride, Margery Anne Hartzog Wiener, were separated for two years while he went through training in Princeton, New Jersey, Miami at the Submarine Chaser School in September 1944, then to Key West and ports in California. Overseas he was aboard the USS Staff in the Pacific. They wrote to each other frequently. Most of the young ensign's letters speak to life aboard a minesweeper in the Pacific. His wife kept up a brave face as she kept the home fires burning in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania. Their letters are prolific and give keen insight into the events of the day on both the battlefront and home front. Postwar letters give a clear understanding of the new spirit in America as the population expanded its horizons and moved into one of the most prosperous times we have known as a Nation.","Transferred from the Institute on World War II and the Human Experience to FSU Libraries Special Collections \u0026 Archives in July 2022.","This collection contains the personal papers, journals, documents, ephemera, and correspondence of the Weiner-Hartzog families in the years before during, and just after World War II. As part of his research, he interviewed Fred E. Wilder, a veteran of the Second World War who moved to southeastern St. Petersburg in 1953. Wilder had acquired four acres of land at the intersection of Sixth Street and Thirty-second Avenue (formerly Bayou Lake Avenue) South. By 1954, he opened Wilder's Trailer Park, with offices located at 770-32nd Avenue South. During the next few years, Wilder's Park became a magnet for retirees from other areas in search of a second home for the winter season. Senior citizens made up nearly 90% of the park's early population.","This site, nestled between Lake Maggiore/Dr. Martin Luther King (Ninth Street) South on the west and Tampa Bay/Sixth Street South on the east, served as an excellent locationfor a mobile home park in the years following World War II. By 1947, a Harry W. McCormick occupied the present site of the Wilder park, while a Lake Shore Trailer Park\nbegan operations at 800-32nd Avenue South.
