Series reflect topics within the collection.","Robert Daniel \"Bob\" Carter was born in Vero Beach, Florida on October 1, 1927. He earned a Bachelor of Science in Agricultural Chemistry from the University of Florida in 1949. From 1949-1954, Mr. Carter worked for the U.S. Department of Agriculture as a Processed Foods Inspector. He was an Inspector-in-Charge of continuous inspection in several citrus processing plants in Florida, as well as some vegetable processing plants in Maine. From 1954-\n1969, he was the Director of Research and Quality Control with processors of citrus products in Florida. He was responsible for the quality assurance of all types of citrus products commonly processed in Florida, and he had some research responsibilities for these products.\nFrom 1969-1992, he was a Research Chemist with the Florida Department of Citrus Scientific Research Department as well as an Adjunct Associate Research Scientist at the University of Florida's Food Science and Human Nutrition Department, part of the Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences Citrus Research and Education Center in Lake Alfred. He was responsible for developing and accomplishing a research program to improve processing\nmethods for citrus juice and concentrate products. This research included the publication of useful research results in scientific journals and interpreting this research for the benefit of Florida citrus processors. He retired in 1992 and spent time as a consultant for citrus forms around the world.\nHe was a founding member of the Hope Presbyterian Church and was active in the church for many years. He was an organizer of Boy Scout Troop 565, sponsored by Hope Presbyterian, and served in various capacities with the Troop including a term as committee Chair from 1966 to 1968. He also served on the Administrative Council of the LakelandmPresbyterian Apartments from 1968 to 1982. The collection also includes log books, supply lists, correspondence, photographs, film, and tapes.\n Hancock kept memorabilia from his time in Antarctica and many of these objects are included in the collection. Notable objects include a logbook of passengers that rode on an aviation rescue vessel that has autographs of famous passengers such as Captain Benson Ford, singer Fay MacKenzie, Saul Chaplin, Frank Sinatra, Phil Silvers, and dancer Betty Yeaton. A collection of international postage stamps includes stamps from various countries such as Yugoslavia, Ecuador, Finland, The Dominican Republic, The United States, England, and Russia. Other objects include figurines of seals and penguins, food rations from Little America, a 48-star United States flag that was flown over Little America, coal and dirt samples collected in Antarctica, a box of matches found by Hancock at Sir Ernest Shackleton's Cape Royds Camp, and several models of equipment used in Antarctica such as helicopters and airplanes.
