A. Jones Construction Co. to build and operate a yard for the construction of Liberty ships in Panama City. One of nineteen American shipyards used for this purpose, the Wainwright Yard saw 108 ships constructed from 1943 to the end of the war. The average per ship construction cost of $2,020,000 placed the Panama City yard midway between per ship costs at the remaining facilities.\n \nNamed for General Jonathan Wainwright, the impact of the yard on the local economy was tremendous. With as many as 15,000 employees at any one time, the company provided housing, stores, restaurants, and laundry facilities within the property. Panama City population increased from 20,000 in 1940 to a wartime peak of 60,000 residents.\n The Wainwright Liberator served as the regularly published newsletter for the Wainwright Yard and included both news about shipbuilding and of a personal nature.\n \nWith the construction of the last ships in late 1945, the shipyard came under the operation of the Panama City Port Authority.\n Citation: Florida's World War II Memorial. \"Wainwright Shipyard Panama City Port Authority.\" Museum of Florida History. \n http://www.museumoffloridahistory.com/exhibits/permanent/wwii/sites.cfm?PR_ID=174 (accessed July 5, 2017).","This collection was donated by Martha J. The Watermark made national news in 1998 when it petitioned to hang rainbow flags in downtown Orlando during Pride Month. In response, televangelist Pat Robertson predicted Orlando would be beset by hurricanes as punishment. Watermarkonline.com was launched online in 1999 and became an online-only publication in 2012.
