In 1952, the Cuban government awarded Tony Pizzo the Order of Carlos Manuel de Céspedes, and in 1976 the government of Italy invested him as a Knight Officer of the Order of Merit. A 1993 Tampa Tribune article commented that no other Tampan had been awarded so many honors for contributions and service to his community.","During the early 1950s, Tony Pizzo realized that the colorful, multiethnic Ybor City of his youth was rapidly fading away due to post-World War II demographic and economic changes. He decided to make it his mission to preserve the history of Tampa's immigrant cigar makers and the community they built. Over time, this mission expanded to include the history of the Tampa and Hillsborough County as a whole. Pursuing his avocation for local history, Pizzo became the most prominent advocate of and spokesman for Tampa's historic heritage, earning the informal title "Mr. Ybor City."","A prolific writer whose history articles appeared in a range of publications- from Tampa Bay History magazine to the popular press- his first book-length work, Tampa Town, 1886-1834: Cracker Village with a Latin Accent, appeared in 1968. In 1979, Pizzo collaborated with WUSF Television in creating Tony Pizzo's Tampa, a ten-part documentary that won two awards from the National University Television Association. In 1983, he co-authored a comprehensive history of Tampa and its vicinity, Tampa, the Treasure City , with USF history professor Gary R. Mormino.","In 1971, Pizzo founded the Tampa Historical Society and served as its first president. He was chairman of the Hillsborough County Historical Commission from 1968 to 1980, and from 1984 until his death was Hillsborough County's official historian. As a Tampa native, civic leader, and prominent spokesman for local history, Pizzo was ideally positioned to gather historically significant material. He "knew everyone" and "everyone" knew him. His decades of gathering information about Tampa's past resulted in a monumental collection of historical materials documenting virtually every aspect of the community's historical heritage from its origins as a frontier fort to the dynamic, modern metropolis of today. In a letter dated August 11, 1980, Tony Pizzo expressed his intention that the Special Collections Department at the University of South Florida's Tampa Library be the permanent repository for his unique collection.","This intention was realized on October 23, 1982 when USF President John Lott Brown formally accepted the Pizzo Collection during a gala dinner program held at the Hyatt Regency Hotel in downtown Tampa. Since that time, the Tony Pizzo Collection has become one of the most consulted and referenced resources for historians and other researchers studying Tampa history and culture. As an "open" collection, librarians, historians and researchers regularly contribute to the growth and value of the collection.","Tony Pizzo died January 2, 1994 and was buried in the mausoleum at Myrtle Hill Memorial Park in Tampa. He was survived by his wife of fifty-two years, Josephine (Acosta) Pizzo, and two sons, Paul and Anthony.","Basse, Craig. "Historian Tony Pizzo Dies." St. Petersburg Times 4 January 1994, Community Times Tampa Bay and State section: pp. 1, 5B.","Cabrera, Cloe. "The Loves of Tony Pizzo." Tampa Tribune 11 January 1994, University section: 4.","DeSormier, Vicki. "Silhouettes: Tony Pizzo." La Gaceta (November 20, 1987): 18. "Dinner Program in Honor of Tony Pizzo."","Ex Libris: Journal of the USF Library Associates, Summer 1982: 18.","Dunn, Hampton. "A Tribute to Tony Pizzo: Hail! While growing up, Tony absorbed the multiethnic cultural ambience of Ybor City and its primarily Cuban, Spanish, and Italian population. A graduate of Hillsborough High School, he attended the University of Florida for two years, then transferred to Stetson University to study law. After two years, he left Stetson to embark on a business career. Following service in the U.S. Army during World War II, Pizzo started his own company, International Brands, a wine and beer distributorship. He subsequently accepted a position with Tampa Wholesale Liquors, which later became Midulla Importing Company and House of Midulla, Inc. From 1950 to his retirement in 1984 Tony Pizzo was the company's vice president in charge of sales, also serving as president of Midulla affiliates Rey del Mundo Cigar Company (1965-1971) and Fruit Wines of Florida (1972-1984). ","Pizzo was active in local business, civic, educational, and cultural organizations, including the Tampa General Hospital Foundation, Barrio Latino Commission, University of Tampa Foundation, University of South Florida President's Council, Ybor City Redevelopment Committee, Tampa Philharmonic Association, and Tampa Bay Business Hall of Fame. He was the founder and first president of the Tampa International Trade Council, first president of the Ybor City Junior Chamber of Commerce, first president of the Rotary Club of Ybor City, and the first honorary mayor (alcalde) of Ybor City. Glenn Westfall, a retired professor of history, donated his Research Files to the Nelson Poynter Memorial Library during the summer of 2005 and a subsequent accession in 2006. The Subject Files follow an alphabetical arrangement and generally maintain the subject designations established by the donor. These boxes represent the largest portion of the collection (4.0 linear feet). Major holdings include research and primary source documents on the Alafia River area, the cigar industry in Florida, mutual aid societies, cultural activities in Ybor City, immigration patterns in the Tampa Bay region, and biographical files. Areas of special interest include clipping files that document activities in the Ocala during the 1880s and 1890s and records of gatherings from the Tampa Old Timers Association during the early 1970s. All manuscript materials in the second accession (boxes 10 and 11) fall into this category. Items in the Sanchez and Haya Real Estate Holdings boxes illustrate the business activities of a company that acquired and sold land parcels during the boom-era days of the cigar industry. Financial records from the late 1920s and early 1930s offer a portrait of the company's assets and liabilities. Abstracts of title provide historical research for various blocks and tracts of land in Ybor City. Thiese boxes also include correspondence sent and received by Martin Carrabello, a Tampa attorney who oversaw the estate after some members of the Sanchez and Haya families had passed away. The Serials and Periodicals box contains various publications collected by Westfall. In addition to newspaper articles and clippings written in the mid and late 1970s about the status of Ybor City, researchers may also consult various issues of the Bulletin of the Suncoast Archaeological Society (coverage 1976-1980) and articles and papers written by Westfall. In the Cigar Art and Miscellaneous Materials reside two distinct types of materials. The cigar art includes lithographic prints and images from cigar manufacturers and printers. This box also contains records of artillery training exercises at Fort Sill, Oklahoma, during the First World War. One item comprises the Government Documents series: the bound "Register of Prisoners Confined in the County Jail of Hillsborough County, Florida," for the years 1904 though 1909. An index in the front provides the accession number of the prisoner; with that number, researchers can examine basic information about the prisoner, his physical makeup, the crime committed, and the disposition of the case. The Films and Media Materials includes three films. Two of these films describe the cigar industry in Ybor City and exist in 16mm format. The other film is 8mm.","USF Libraries - Tampa Special Collections","Westfall, L. A trial ensued in which Avellanal defended himself against charges of running a diploma mill, and in 1947, the Southern University Charter was revoked.","Avellanal was the creator and founder of numerous organizations, including the Legión de Honor de la República de Cuba (Legion of Honor of the Republic of Cuba), an organization that bestowed honors and awards to worthy individuals such as Fulgencio Batista of Cuba, Chinese Congresswoman Grace Yi Hsu, and Norberto Lopez Avelar, then governor of the Mexican state of Morelos. While in Mexico, Avellanal obtained the title of Lieutenant General and was often seen in full uniform at Ybor City events.","In the early 1970s, Avellanal joined the advisory committee for Ybor City's Hillsborough Community College campus and led efforts to save the El Pasaje Hotel building, for which he received a preservation award from U.S. Senator Richard Stone. José Luis Avellanal died in 1982, and remains one of the most colorful characters in Ybor City memory.","Note written by Jean McAllister, 2011

Jose Luis Avellanal collection, USF Libraries - Tampa Special Collections, University of South Florida, Tampa, FL.

Jose Luis Avellanal collection, USF Libraries - Tampa Special Collections, University of South Florida, Tampa, FL.

Jose Ramon Avellanal Collection, USF Libraries - Tampa Special Collections, University of South Florida, Tampa, FL.

","
Prince Alexis N. Materials are alphabetical and chronological within series.","Robert William "Bob" Saunders, Sr., son of Willard and Christina Rogers Saunders, was born on June 9, 1921 and grew up in an area of West Tampa (FL) known as Roberts City. After graduating from Middleton High School in 1940, he attended Bethune-Cookman College in Daytona Beach, FL before entering the Army Air Corps in 1942. He was primarily stationed at the Tuskegee Army Air Field in Alabama and, by the time he was discharged in 1946, he had been awarded the Good Conduct Medal, the Atlantic Theater of Operations Medal, and the World War Two Victory Medal.","After the war, Bob returned to Tampa and worked for the Florida Sentinel Bulletin , the city's African American newspaper. His column, "Central Avenue Buckshot," chronicled life on Tampa's Central Avenue. When he moved to Cincinnati, OH to work for that city's edition of the Cleveland Call and Post , he became active with the local branch of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP).","In 1947 Bob moved to Michigan and enrolled in the Detroit Institute of Technology, earning his B.A. degree in 1951. He worked for Ford Motor Company, became active in union affairs, and supported the local branch of the NAACP.","After the murder of Harry T. Moore in 1951, Bob was appointed Field Director for the NAACP, State of Florida. Between 1952 and 1966, he developed programs aimed at increasing NAACP membership and fundraising. He also investigated police brutality cases, increased voter registration, secured salary increases for black teachers, and worked to end racial segregation in the public schools. During that time he also served as the Executive Secretary for the Florida State Conference of Branches and Youth Councils.","In 1966 Bob moved to Atlanta to head the Southeast Regional Civil Rights section of the Office of Equal Opportunity. He served as Chief of the Office of Civil Rights until 1970 and as Chief of the Office of Human Rights from 1970 to 1976. He was responsible for the implementation and enforcement of all civil rights requirements in poverty programs, including the Job Corps, Community Action, Head Start, and Legal Services. He also organized state equal opportunity officers in all eight states of the region to form the Southeastern Equal Opportunity Association. Region IV included Alabama, Georgia, Florida, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee, Mississippi, and Kentucky.","When Bob returned to Tampa in 1976, he became the Director of the Hillsborough County Equal Opportunity Office. During his eleven-year tenure, he developed the Civil Rights Program, the Fair Housing Program, the Minority Business Project, EEO Contract Compliance, and the Human Rights Ordinance for Hillsborough County.","From 1987 to 1988 he served as Executive Assistant to the County Administrator (Larry J. Brown), Board of County Commissioners, Hillsborough County, Florida. Bob retired from public service in June 1988.","Bob's book, Bridging the Gap: Continuing the Florida Legacy of Harry T. Moore, 1952-1966 , was published by the University of Tampa Press in 2000. During his career he received numerous awards including the Martin Luther King Jr. Leadership Award from Florida A & M University, the honorary degree of Doctor of Public Service from the University of Tampa, and the honorary degree of Doctor of Humanities from the University of South Florida. He died on March 18, 2003.","Bob's grandparents, Bahamian immigrants, were founding members of the Tampa Chapter of the NAACP in 1917.","Helen Strickland Saunders, the daughter of Henry J. and Lucy A. Strickland, was born in Mims, Florida, and graduated from Titusville High School (Valedictorian). After attending Bethune-Cookman College in Daytona Beach, she joined the Tampa office of the Central Life Insurance Company of Florida as a claims clerk. Within several years she became the first assistant to the manager of the Ordinary Department, then department manager, and in 1985 she was appointed Personnel Director. She retired in 1989.","Helen served as secretary of the Tampa Branch of the NAACP from 1964 to 1976 and as president from 1976 to 1981.","Helen and Bob married in 1953. Their son, Robert W. Saunders, Jr., served as a detective with the Hillsborough County Sheriff's Department.","published","Processed","Includes materials on NAACP (National Association for the Advancement of Colored People) activities in the nation, the state of Florida, and the city of Tampa, FL, civil rights, affirmative action, voter registration, school desegregation, equal employment opportunity, fair housing, and equal access for the disenfranchised. Also includes material on Harry T.
