Boxes 159-243 contain financial records.","When Spanish immigrants came to Tampa in the 1890s, they brought with them the idea of the mutual aid society, a voluntary association or club that pooled resources to provide members with a variety of social, cultural, and economic benefits. The first such club established in Tampa was the Centro Español, founded in 1891. The Centro Asturiano began in 1902 when a group of members seceded from the Centro Español to create a club that included healthcare. Named for the northwest Spanish region of Asturias from which many of the founding members had come, the new society was chartered as a branch of the Centro Asturiano de Habana, and was known for decades as the \"Tampa Delegation\" of the Cuban organization.","On January 22, 1909, the club dedicated a handsome red brick building, which cost $75,000. When fire destroyed the building in 1912, club members voted to build an even larger and more impressive facility. This columned, neoclassical building, which the Tampa Morning Tribune called \"the most beautiful building in the South,\" opened in 1914 at a cost of $110,000. The building was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1974 and retains its stature as one of the most outstanding structures in Tampa's Ybor City historic district. The club's cantina provided a pleasant atmosphere for members to spend their leisure time, a place to talk, play dominos, and smoke a cigar. The palatial ballroom was the scene of glittering social affairs, balls, tea dances, and other activities. A space was set aside for a library and gymnasium as well to promote the club's mission of education, good health and the general well-being of its members. The Centro's building served as a center of social and cultural life for its community and is still owned by the club to this day.","A central part of club life was the building's elaborate theatre. In its heyday, the Centro theatre was the venue for plays, operas, musicals, and other performances featuring both local talent and well-known Cuban, Spanish, and Italian entertainers who made Ybor City part of their tours. During the depression years of the 1930s, the Spanish language unit of the WPA Federal Theatre presented performances in the Centro's theatre, which was also used for cigar labor union meetings and other events.","The largest of all the Tampa fraternal clubs, the Centro expanded and flourished in the early decades of the twentieth century, due in large part to its acceptance of members from various ethnicities and its medical facilities. Following World War II however, membership gradually declined as economic and demographic changes eroded the cigar-making immigrant community. Many of the services offered by the club either became functions of government agencies or were too expensive to maintain, lessening the advantages of membership. With the assimilation of its traditional membership base into the general population, the club was no longer the center of the cohesive ethnic community it once served. Despite adversity, the Centro Asturiano has endured, serving as an icon of heritage to descendants of the Spanish immigrants who played such a significant role in the development of modern Tampa.","Note written by Paul Camp, 2006; Joe Tamargo, 2011.","Centro Asturiano De Tampa Membership Records Photograph Collection . These include organizational, financial, ephemera, artifacts, photographs, and media. Records are arranged chronologically within each series. Established in 1845, the same year Florida became a state, the agency provides law enforcement services throughout Hillsborough County, including Tampa, Plant City, Temple Terrace, and the county's many unincorporated communities. Over nearly two centuries, the sheriff's office has evolved from a frontier-era operation into one of the largest and most technologically advanced law enforcement agencies in the state.","The Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office was created following legislation passed by the Florida Legislature requiring each county in the newly admitted state to elect a sheriff. At the time, Hillsborough County had only 47 eligible voters. John Parker, a captain during the Seminole Indian Wars, became the county's first sheriff in 1845. Parker effectively operated as a one-man department and also served as the county's ex-officio tax collector.","In 1847, John Irving Hooker was elected sheriff, and by 1848 the county constructed its first jail, at a time when Tampa's population was only about 100 residents. The office gradually expanded as the county grew. Deputies were not officially added until 1857 during the administration of Sheriff Henry Parker. Three years later, under Sheriff William S. Spencer, a new jailhouse was built on Jefferson Street in 1860 to accommodate the county's increasing population and legal demands.","During the late nineteenth century, the sheriff's office reflected broader social changes taking place across Florida and the South. In 1895, Sheriff Thomas K. Spencer deputized Levin Arwood as the first Black deputy sheriff in Hillsborough County, marking a significant milestone in the agency's history. The county continued to modernize into the twentieth century, and in May 1926 a new Hillsborough County Jail opened on Pierce Street under Sheriff Luther M. Heirs.","Additional changes followed in the decades ahead. In 1929, under Sheriff Luther Hatton, Eleanor E. Robinson became the first female deputy sheriff employed by the agency, representing another important step in the department's diversification.","In 1941, Hugh Culbreath was elected sheriff and established the agency's first substation in Plant City to better serve eastern Hillsborough County. He also became the first sheriff in 53 years to win reelection when he secured a second term in 1944. In 1961, Sheriff Ed Blackburn implemented the agency's first marine unit, featuring a patrol boat known as the \"Keystone Cop.\"","During the tenure of Sheriff Malcolm Beard from 1965 to 1978, the agency established the Mounted Posse, created the School Crossing Guard program, and opened the new Morgan Street Jail in 1965. Under Sheriff Walter Heinrich, the Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office became the first sheriff's office in the southeastern United States and the third in the nation to earn accreditation from the Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies (CALEA). In 1991, the agency became the first sheriff's office in the country to receive \"unconditional\" reaccreditation.","Throughout the twentieth and twenty-first centuries, the Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office expanded alongside the rapid growth of the Tampa Bay region. What began as a frontier law enforcement office evolved into a full-service agency responsible for patrol operations, criminal investigations, detention services, courthouse security, aviation and marine operations, emergency response, and numerous community programs. Under current Sheriff Chad Chronister, the agency partnered with University of South Florida's Institute for Digital Exploration to digitize and preserve thousands of historical records dating back to the nineteenth century. These records are now housed in the university's Special Collections Library in Tampa.","References: ","Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office: 150 Years, 1845-1995. During the Depression, the elder Harrison worked intermittently as a newspaper compositor and proof-reader. He first introduced Harry to science fiction as a seven-year-old, giving him a copy of the large-format pulp magazine Amazing Stories. At the age of thirteen, Harry became a founding member of the Queens Chapter of the Science Fiction League; at the age of fifteen, he wrote his first fan letter, published in the Fall 1940 issue of Captain Future.","Upon graduating from Forest Hills High School (NY), Harrison was drafted into the U.S. Army Air Corps. In 1944, while stationed in Laredo, Texas, he began studying the international language Esperanto, a lifelong pursuit and an influence on his later writings. Discharged in 1946, Harrison eventually began studying art, attending the Manhattan Cartoonists and Illustrators School. The young illustrator teamed up with Wally Wood, and the two garnered the attention of Bill Gaines at E.C. Comics. Wood and Harrison persuaded Gaines to create a science fiction comic, and the editor responded with Weird Science.","Harrison's gradual move from illustration to writing began in the early 1950s when he was a member of the legendary New York Hydra Club (1946-1957/58), founded in Frederick Pohl's Greenwich Village apartment. During this period, Harrison developed an illness that limited his drawing abilities. Using a typewriter, he wrote a short story called \"I Walk through the Rocks,\" which he sold to fellow Hydra member Damon Knight for $100. Worlds Beyond published the story under the title \"Rock Diver\" in February 1951. Harrison's second science fiction story, published under the pseudonym Felix Boyd, appeared in the September 1953 issue of Rocket Stories.","In June 1954, Harrison married Joan Merkler, a dress designer and ballet dancer. Harrison worked as an art director, a freelance comics script-writer and editor until the mid-1950s, when the scandal of Congressional hearings focused on Bill Gaines resulted in backlash, censoring, and the demise of E.C. Comics. Harrison moved his family to Cuautla (Morelos) Mexico in 1956, so that he could work on Deathworld, his first full-length science fiction novel. In August of the following year, Harrison published the short story, \"The Stainless Steel Rat,\" in John W. Campbell's Astounding Science Fiction. This work introduced Harrison's most famous character, James Boliver, alias 'Slippery Jim' DiGriz. Campbell's positive reception buoyed Harrison into writing more science fiction stories. He rapidly became one of \"Campbell's writers,\" a group writers now equated with the Golden Age of American science fiction.","During the early 1960s, Deathworld, Planet of the Damned and Vendetta for the Saint appeared in serialized form. A novel he provisionally entitled If You Can Read This, You're Too Damn Close appeared in Frederick Pohl's Galaxy as \"Starsloggers\" and in Michael Moorcock's New Worlds under the title \"Bill, the Galactic Hero.\" In 1965, he published his first short story collection, Two Tales and Eight Tomorrows, with an introduction by Brian Aldiss. The two writers became lifelong friends and collaborators on over 20 science fiction anthologies. Their most famous collaboration, the Best SF Series, was published consistently from 1967-1976.","During the late 1960s, the Harrisons returned to the United States, residing in San Diego, California. Harrison's novels Plague from Space, The Technicolor Time Machine, Captive Universe, Spaceship Medic and Make Room! Make Room! appeared in print. The latter formed the basis of the 1973 film, Soylent Green, for which Harrison received a \"Best Dramatic Presentation\" Nebula Award (1973).","In the 1970s, Harrison taught science fiction at San Diego State College and contributed to two college texts: A Science Fiction Reader (1973) and Science Fiction Novellas (1975). During the decade, he edited 25 science fiction anthologies, including one in honor of his mentor-patron, John W. Campbell, who died in 1971. Two years later, he and Brian Aldiss honored Campbell by establishing the John W. Campbell Memorial Award, an annual international juried award for the best science fiction novel.","Throughout the 1980s and 1990s, Harrison published his West of Eden trilogy, the first part of his Stars and Stripes Forever trilogy, five Bill, the Galactic Hero novels, and a number of short stories. During this period, he formed collaborations with Tom Shippey, Jack Cohen, Robert E. Myers, and Marvin Minsky. The first full-length study of Harrison's work, Harry Harrison by Leon Stover, appeared in 1990.","A prolific author, editor, fan, critic and historian of science fiction, Harrison's professional career spans more than five decades. He was the first president of the World SF (1978-80) and was nominated for three Nebula Awards and two Hugo Awards. In 2001, Harrison celebrated his 50th anniversary as a science fiction writer by publishing 50 in 50, an anthology of his finest short stories. He was inducted into the SF Hall of Fame in 2003.","Note written by ","published","This collection primarily consists of typescripts, setting copies, and copyedited proofs of many of Harrison's published and unpublished works as well as a small amount of correspondence.  Coverage of short stories dates from 1964-1987; coverage of novels dates from 1996-2002; correspondence dates from 1972-2004.  Editorial notation is prevalent throughout the collection.","None.
