True graduated in 1909 from Colgate University in New York. He completed two years of post-graduate coursework at the University of Chicago, and became a stockbroker, business promoter, and later, the president of True, Webber and Company. A millionaire by the age of thirty, he lost his fortune during the Wall Street Crash of 1929. Afterwards, he devoted much of his time to research, writing, and editorial work, studying early maps of America and Florida. He was especially interested in the voyages of early explorers such as Giovanni da Verrazano, John and Sebastian Cabot, Pánfilo Narvaez, Ponce de León, and Hernando de Soto.
