Thompson was born in New York City in 1907, and received his bachelor's and master's degrees from Columbia University. Between 1931 and 1941 he taught public speaking at the City College of New York, studied at New York University, and traveled to Dublin to complete his dissertation, \"Fenianism and the Celtic Renaissance.\" Shortly after receiving his doctorate, Dr. Thompson was subpoenaed by the Rapp Coudert Committee of the New York State Legislature, investigated, and then suspended and fired by the CCNY for misconduct related to alleged Communist Party membership. He won reinstatement in December 1947 in a case covered by many histories of academic freedom. During the World War II period (1943-1946), he served as an Intelligence Officer in the U.S. Army, and after the war, he joined the Writing Department of Johns Hopkins University. Moving to Florida in 1953, he taught at Rollins College for two years before joining the faculty of the University of Tampa, retiring in 1976. He specialized in Irish literature, and during the early 1970s headed the university's Humanities Division. After retirement, Dr. Thompson taught Shakespeare at the Tampa Preparatory School until his death in 1989. He would best be remembered for his teaching and literary contributions. His novel Abraham's Wife focuses on a mixed race marriage between Cubans, the Ybor City section of Tampa, and the War of 1898. According to liner notes on the book jacket, Thompson visited Cuba many times in the 1920s, with his last visit for the purpose of studying at the University of Havana. He drew upon these experiences in creating the Cuban setting for an unpublished sequel, \"Abraham's Temptation.\" From the 1940s through the early 1980s, he reviewed hundreds of novels and non-fiction works for the Baltimore Sun, Roanoke Times, and the Tampa Tribune. He published literary criticism in professional journals, and like many an author, penned numerous articles, anthologies, and novels that remain unpublished. Dr. Thompson collected rare Anglo-Irish imprints and poetry broadsides, and donated substantial portions of these collections to the University of Tampa and the University of South Florida. He and his wife Marjorie spent many summers on extended bicycling vacations, which, along with his other interests, Dr. Thompson recorded in a meticulously detailed daily journal.","Note written by Thompson family","Thompson, Francis J. Individual series are devoted to Collins' years in the House of Representatives and the Senate, the Governorship, the Chairmanship of the Democratic National Convention, his tenure as president of the National Association of Broadcasters, appointments as both Director of Community Relations and Undersecretary of Commerce, an unsuccessful bid for the Senate in 1968, and his years in retirement. Within each series, the papers are arranged categorically by box. Pictures, films, and memorabilia are arranged in separate series as well.","LeRoy Collins was born in Tallahassee on March 10, 1909. He graduated from Leon High School in Tallahassee and received a degree in law from Cumberland University in Birmingham, Alabama. He returned to Tallahassee and married Mary Call Darby, the great-granddaughter of Richard Call who had twice served as Territorial Governor of Florida.","Soon after his marriage to Mary Call, Collins was elected as the representative of Leon County to the Florida House of Representatives in 1934. He served in this position until 1940 when he filled the term of the late William Hodges in the Florida Senate. Collins purchased the Call family home \"The Grove\" in 1941 and shortly thereafter resigned his position from the Florida Senate to join the Navy in 1942. He was reelected to the Florida Senate upon his return from World War II in 1946. He was reelected in 1950, serving until 1954 when a special election was held to fill the remaining two years in the term of the late Governor Daniel T. McCarty, who had died in office in 1953.","Collins Served as Florida's thirty-third Governor from 1955 to 1961 where he dealt with the complicated social and political issues of the time. His two greatest issues were the dismantling of segregation and the process of political patronage, both of which he employed a liberal diplomacy. Collins was also integral in the development of the Florida University system, including the University of South Florida in Tampa. He is considered by many historians to be one of the first liberal Southern Democrats to transform the political agenda of the South and is thought to be one of the best governors in Florida's History.","Collins served as the Chairman of the Democratic National Convention in 1960, where he was a possible candidate for the presidential nomination due to his leadership position amongst Southern Governors and his strong stance on Civil Rights which would attract Northern liberals, however he did not seek the nomination. Upon leaving the governor's office, he became President of the National Association of Broadcasters, where he served until 1964. President Lyndon B. Johnson appointed Collins to be the first Director of Community Relations, a government office created out of the Civil Rights Act of 1964. This was followed by an appointment to the Undersecretary of Commerce in 1965 by President Johnson.","Following his service in the federal government, Collins sought reelection to the Florida Senate in 1968. He won the primary but lost in the general election. His progressive stand for Civil Rights and his highly publicized role in the Selma, Alabama march while Director of Community Relations is credited with having cost him the 1968 Senate election.","Upon his retirement from public service, Collins retired from his law firm in Tampa in which he had been a partner. He then returned to \"The Grove\" in Tallahassee where he remained active in the community and was also a guest contributor on politics to the St. Petersburg Times until his death from cancer in 1991","Note written by JT, 2011","Thomas LeRoy Collins Papers, Special Collections, Robert Manning Strozier Library, Florida State University, Tallahassee, Florida.","The materials comprising the Collins papers range in date from the 1940s to the 1980s, with concentrations in Collins' terms as Governor and materials related to his 1968 unsuccessful Senatorial campaign. Glenn Westfall, a retired professor of history, donated his Research Files to the Nelson Poynter Memorial Library during the summer of 2005 and a subsequent accession in 2006. The Subject Files follow an alphabetical arrangement and generally maintain the subject designations established by the donor. These boxes represent the largest portion of the collection (4.0 linear feet). Major holdings include research and primary source documents on the Alafia River area, the cigar industry in Florida, mutual aid societies, cultural activities in Ybor City, immigration patterns in the Tampa Bay region, and biographical files. Areas of special interest include clipping files that document activities in the Ocala during the 1880s and 1890s and records of gatherings from the Tampa Old Timers Association during the early 1970s. All manuscript materials in the second accession (boxes 10 and 11) fall into this category. Items in the Sanchez and Haya Real Estate Holdings boxes illustrate the business activities of a company that acquired and sold land parcels during the boom-era days of the cigar industry. Financial records from the late 1920s and early 1930s offer a portrait of the company's assets and liabilities. Abstracts of title provide historical research for various blocks and tracts of land in Ybor City. Thiese boxes also include correspondence sent and received by Martin Carrabello, a Tampa attorney who oversaw the estate after some members of the Sanchez and Haya families had passed away. The Serials and Periodicals box contains various publications collected by Westfall. In addition to newspaper articles and clippings written in the mid and late 1970s about the status of Ybor City, researchers may also consult various issues of the Bulletin of the Suncoast Archaeological Society (coverage 1976-1980) and articles and papers written by Westfall. In the Cigar Art and Miscellaneous Materials reside two distinct types of materials. The cigar art includes lithographic prints and images from cigar manufacturers and printers. This box also contains records of artillery training exercises at Fort Sill, Oklahoma, during the First World War. One item comprises the Government Documents series: the bound \"Register of Prisoners Confined in the County Jail of Hillsborough County, Florida,\" for the years 1904 though 1909. An index in the front provides the accession number of the prisoner; with that number, researchers can examine basic information about the prisoner, his physical makeup, the crime committed, and the disposition of the case. The Films and Media Materials includes three films. Two of these films describe the cigar industry in Ybor City and exist in 16mm format. The other film is 8mm.","USF Libraries - Tampa Special Collections","Westfall, L. His real estate career began during childhood, when he purchased several lots from his father using money earned from various jobs outside of his eighth grade classroom. While making payments on these lots, Fuller improved them and sold them at a considerable profit. He graduated from the University of North Carolina in 1915, becoming St. Petersburg High School's first paid football coach. He went on to become a licensed real estate broker and was responsible for managing his father's real estate empire. For two years, Fuller worked as an editor for the St. Petersburg Times and the Manatee River Journal. Between 1925 and 1926, he opened the Jungle Prada shopping center, the Jungle Country Club Hotel, and the Piper-Fuller Flying Field, the city of St. Petersburg's first airfield. With the end of the economic boom in 1926, Walter Fuller lost much of his fortune. He became a supporter of Franklin D. The other film is 8mm.\u003c/abstract\u003e"],"abstract_tesim":["L.
