Brandon would go on to donate land for the local Methodist Church and cemetary before his death in 1886. After the completion of a railroad line which connected New Hope to Plant City and Tampa, the community's population grew, and Victoria Brandon, John Brandon's widow, contracted a surveyor to plat around forty acres of land near the new railway. In 1890, the surveyor named the new area for Brandon. By 1920, Brandon's population was nearly 500, and the expansion of today's State Road 60 in the 1950s led to a population boom of around 5000. The area has continued to grow and as of 2020, the population has grown to 114,626.","Sources:\nBrandon (New Hope) Buckhorn Creek, HILLSBOROUGH COUNTY HISTORIC RESOURCES SURVEY REPORT. 1998, https://hillsborough.wateratlas.usf.edu/upload/documents/HILLSBOROUGH_COUNTY_Historic_Resources_Excerpts_Brandon.pdf.
