Daughter of a Hungarian military officer, the dramatic soprano was married as a young girl and came to New York City, where she received the bulk of her vocal training. Baritone Antonio Scotti was credited with her discovery and her initial contract with the Metropolitan Opera. She sang her debut there in December of 1920 as Muestta in La Boheme. Unhappy with the light roles assigned to her, she left the company in 1922 to tour with Scotti in such roles as Tosca and Butterfly, as well as Nedda and Micaela. In 1925 her Viennese Butterfly debut excited international attention, and in 1926 her milestone engagement in Dresden as the first German-language Turandot (under Fritz Busch) made operatic history. She remained for six seasons in Dresden while intermittently appearing in Berlin, Vienna, London, and Paris. In 1928 Toscanini selected her to sing Turandot at La Scala, and in 1930 the French government conferred upon her the title of Madame for \"service in expanding French art.\" She went to San Francisco for Turandot in 1927 and to Covent Garden for the same role in 1928 and 1929. It was Philadephia and the year 1931 that brought her next milestone: Marie in the American premiere of Wozzeck under Leopold Stokowski. This highly successful production was immediately repeated at the Metropolitan. The next year she sang Elektra--which she had studied extensively with Richard Strauss himself--under Fritz Reiner in Philadelphia. Her musical associations with Alban Berg and Richard Strauss were longstanding and productive--the latter devoting great time and care to her in performance of Don Giovanni (Donna Anna) and his own Die Frau ohne Schatten and Salome. His father planted five acres of orange trees in Haines City, Florida and the family relocated to the area permanently in 1947. Attaway enrolled at Florida Southern College in the fall of 1947, where he majored in chemistry\nbut also took citrus classes so that he could help his father in their groves. He graduated in 1951 with a Bachelor in Science degree, continued his education at the University of Florida, where he received his Master's degree in 1953, and then Duke University, where he was awarded a Ph.D. in 1957.\nAfter working for a brief period of time in West Virginia, Attaway returned to Florida as research chemist at the Citrus Research and Education Center in Lake Alfred. There he worked under Dr. Louis MacDowell, the center's first Director of Scientific Research and with C.D. Atkins. Atkins and he\ncollaborated on three patents concerning \"essence for enhancing the flavor of citrus juices.\"Attaway developed a program to define orange juice quality by the content of desirable components, which contributed to taste and flavor. He represented the Florida citrus industry before\nthe EPA, OSHA, and other agencies regarding proposals to cancel the use of EDB (Ethylene dibromide) as a quarantine fumigant for the Caribbean fruit fly. He led several years of research and efforts to reduce worker exposure to fumigants and reduced pesticide residues on citrus. This helped to\nperfect the use of cold treatment as the main infestation treatment for the Caribbean fruit fly. Attaway also authored many publications, including two books A History of Florida Citrus Freezes, 1997, and Hurricanes and Florida Agriculture, 1999. He was a member of the Florida\nDepartment of Citrus Medical and Nutritional Research Advisory Council from 1980 to 1995. From 1988 to 1995 he was a director for the Florida Citrus Sports Association in Orlando, and from 1992 until 1995\nhe was the Scientific Coordinator for the Citrus Production Research Advisory Council. In 1995 he started a consulting firm, Florida Citrus Consultants International, Inc. John Allen Attaway, Sr. was inducted into the Florida Citrus hall of Fame in 2001.","For more information on Citrus Freezes, please see the John A. Haley Congressional Papers. In the late 1970s, Japan refused to admit millions of dollars' worth of Florida grapefruit into their country. This was Florida's first dispute with Japan over pesticide residue. Attaway spent over two\nweeks with the Japanese Ministry of Health and Welfare negotiating new sampling and testing procedures. His efforts resulted in saving the majority of the shipment, with less than $100,000 of the multi-million dollar shipment being turned away. For more information on this issue, please see the\nAndy Ireland Congressional Papers.","This collection has been processed at a basic level in an effort to make this collection available in the shortest amount of time. Misfiled documents and other errors may be present.","The John Allen Attaway, Sr. Florida Freeze and Hurricane Research Files contain biographical information, research files, notes, and manuscripts for the two books - A History of Florida Citrus Freezes and Hurricanes and Florida Agriculture. Types of documents include government publications,\nscientific studies, other academic papers, newspaper articles, and first-hand interview notes that the subject used in the writing of his manuscripts. This group of materials was into two series, and then by\nchapter according to the book. A History of Florida Citrus Freezes includes Attaway's preliminary research, four revisions of the manuscript, as well as promotional materials and tables \u0026 captions for the book. Alongside many of\nthe chapters is research materials dedicated to them. Hurricanes and Florida Agriculture includes research, and details of hurricanes from 1882\n1998. The first half is primarily excerpts from Monthly Weather Review, later adding the U. S. Department of Agriculture Weather Review (Florida Section) and several other scholarly sources. The seasonal weather reports information was obtained from the Report on Horticultural Protection Work for each agricultural district in the state of Florida. Generally, this covers the range 1937 – 1977.","The John Allen Attaway Collection is owned by Florida Southern College. This collection is protected by copyright and/or related rights.
