Grierson\nattended the University of Toronto where he obtained a B.S. in Biological and Agricultural Sciences and his M.S. and Ph.D. in Agricultural Science. Grierson worked in the agricultural industry in Canada until the outbreak of World War Two. Grierson served as a navigator in the Royal Canadian Air Force and was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross and the Air Force Cross. After the war he accepted a position at the University of Florida's Citrus Research and Education Center in Lake Alfred, Florida. Beginning in 1952 Grierson served\nthe University of Florida's Citrus Research and Education Center for thirty years. He also taught evening classes at Florida Southern College in the 1950s and 1960s. Dr. Grierson officially retired at the end of 1982. Following his retirement, Grierson and his wife left Florida to participate in a two-year U.S. Aide Project to assist in the domestic distribution and marketing of food in Jamaica. While in Jamaica, Grierson was the project leader for fruits and vegetables.","William Grierson was an innovator in fresh citrus fruit research and harvesting. His contributions to the Florida citrus industry include, but are not limited to, designing the modern degreening room which became standard throughout Florida and the transition to and standardization of pallet boxes. It was a growerowned fresh citrus cooperative offering members grove care, harvesting, packing services, and marketing. HCCGA began operation in 1909 in Haines City, Florida and shipped citrus fruit to markets\nin the United States and Canada under brands including Hill Top, Hill Top Gold, Red Cloud, and Canoe Creek. At one time, they supplied fruit through DNE World Citrus, Ft Pierce, Florida and processed fruit through Florida's Natural Growers, Lake Wales, Florida. At one time in its history, it was the second\noldest citrus cooperative in Florida and the fifth largest packing operation in the state. It went inactive in 2022.","The HCCGA records include photographs, annual meeting reports, newsletters, and memorabilia. The annual meeting reports date from 1949 to 2009 and include general financial reports to the membership. Memorabilia includes baseball caps, tie pins, drink coasters, and sunglasses. There are VHS tapes with marketing materials, and several oversized copies of newspaper articles. There are also crate labels.","Copyright has been transferred to the college. In\n1930 he came to Polk County and began working at the Waverly\nPackinghouse. The youthful Phillips attracted the eye of the manager, who\ngave him a small role in the sales office. In 1936, he was appointed Traffic and\nAssistant Sales Manager, and he later ascended to Sales Manager in 1942.\nIn 1951 Phillips became general manager of the Haines City Growers Association\n(HCGA). His sense of humor and outgoing nature made him popular within the\norganization, and he was known for an ability to make his workers productive. He\nwas also known for always being able to find ways to save the company money.\nPhillips revamped the entire HCGA packing system, thus increasing wages while\nactually decreasing the cost the company was paying per box. Phillips was always\nlauded for his willingness to try new things. This paid off during his time with the\nHCGA as he set the foundation for the organization to grow and prosper in the\nfuture.\nThroughout his career, he became known to the citrus industry as the \"Champion\nof the Cooperative,\" an outspoken advocate of the \"total\" cooperative. He was\namong the first growers to plant and encourage the development of the Murcott,\nwhich later became known as the Honey Tangerine.\nPhillips developed a lengthy list of associations during his career. He served on the\nBoard of Directors for Citrus World, Inc. for 27 years, and Citrus Central, Inc. for\n14 years.
