He is internationally recognized for his scholarship and has spoken or taught at conferences in Honduras, Istanbul, and numerous journalism conferences in the U.S. and Canada. He has received the \"Magazine Educator of the Year\" award from the Association for Education in Journalism and Mass Communication and a Distinguished Faculty Alumnus recognition from the University of Tennessee College of Communication and Media.","Prior to entering the academic world in 1986, he was director of communications and editor of Interchange for the Episcopal Diocese of Southern Ohio in Cincinnati, where he covered reporting assignments in Lagos, Nigeria; Geneva, Switzerland; and more than a dozen states.","Besides his books, he was a freelance magazine writer for the In Trust Center for Theological Schools from 2016-2021 and his articles  may be found at https://www.intrust.org/authors/david-e-sumner.
