Washington's life as the founder and pastor of the First Church of Peace and the efforts to maintain his legacy after his death with the John T. Washington Community Service Awards and Scholarship and the John T. Washington Honor Society. \n\nJohn Thomas Washington was born in 1940 in Immokalee, Florida. He was an associate professor of sociology at the University of Central Florida (UCF) and one of UCF's first Black faculty members. Washington worked to promote diversity at UCF, serving as one of the first advisors for the Black Student Union as well as other student organizations. He also aided in developing UCF's Office of Equal Opportunity and Affirmative Action and the Office of Multicultural Academic and Support Services. \n\nBefore his time at UCF, Washington served as an airman in the United States Air Force from 1962-1964. He went on to earn his bachelor's and master's degrees at Rollins College and his Ph.D. at the University of Florida. In addition to his work at UCF, Washington founded the First Church of Peace in Orlando and served as the church's pastor. Washington died in 1983 at the age of 42 from a sudden heart attack. Following his death, the Student Services Building was renamed the John T. Washington Center in 1984. The John T. Washington Community Service Awards \u0026amp; Scholarship were also founded in his honor. In 1996, the John T. She attended elementary school in St. Petersburg but graduated from Lakeland High School in 1934 and Florida Southern College in 1937 with a BS. Ed degree. She attended graduate classes at the Art Institute of Pittsburg, but obtained her Master's degree in Education from Pennsylvania State University in 1942. In 1968 she received an honorary degree of Doctor of Human letters by Philathea College of London, Ontario, Canada, and she took graduate level classes at the University of Florida, but she never finished a Ph.D. She died December 14, 2006 after retiring from Florida Southern College in 1981 but teaching as an adjunct for two more years. ","She worked as a student assistant in the Art department (1936-37) at FSC . It was at this time that Dr. Spivey, president of the college, asked her to show Mr. Frank Lloyd Wright around the campus the first day he visited in 1937. Stoddard was then hired to teach art at the campus in the fall on 1937 and continued the role of liaison with Wright for the rest of his life. She was also responsible for handling much of the correspondence that occurred during the construction. Because of the nature of her responsibility with the project and her over forty-plus year tenure at the school, Stoddard planned to write a book on the history of the campus, and accumulated sources regarding Florida Southern College and Frank Lloyd Wright. Friend and author Lawrence Kinsley utilized her extensive archive for his 2016 text, A Child of the Sun: Frank Lloyd Wright's West Campus Project at Florida Southern College.
