After graduating with honors from the University of Santo Tomás de Villanueva in 1952 with a Bachelor of Arts in Economics, he pursued advanced studies, earning his Master's degree and a Doctorate in Economic Sciences in 1956, becoming the first graduate of a doctoral program in economics in Cuba. During this time, he began his teaching career at the university, eventually becoming a Professor in both the Economics Department at the University of Villanueva and the University of Havana's Institute of Higher Economics. Additionally, he held prominent roles in the private and public sectors, including Director of the Department of Economics at the National Association of Industrialists of Cuba and the Ministry of Finance.","In 1962, Jorge was forced to leave Cuba due to political upheaval and settled in the United States. He quickly resumed his academic career, first as an Assistant Professor at Merrimac College in Massachusetts, where he became a full professor by 1972. He later moved to Miami, where he continued his academic work at Biscayne College and Miami Dade Community College. In 1974, he joined the University of Miami, where he taught economics and coordinated Spanish-language programs, while also leading the university's \"Continuing Education\" programs for Cuban professionals. He furthered his impact in academia by becoming a key administrator at various institutions, including serving as Provost at Biscayne College and Executive Vice President at Florida International University (FIU).","Jorge has been a prolific writer and consultant, publishing over twenty books and hundreds of articles on topics such as economic theory, Latin American development, foreign investment, and Cuban economics. His expertise has been sought after by both public and private organizations, and he is currently the Dean of the College of Economists of Cuba, a position he held prior to leaving Cuba. Beyond academia, Jorge has been actively involved in community affairs, especially related to the Cuban-American population in Miami, serving in various government and civic roles, including the first Director of the State Commission for Hispanic Affairs in Florida.
