According to the Department History of UCF Theatre, the department experienced quite the overhaul in 1992 when Dr. Donald Seay was made Chair. Before then, the UCF Theatre Department was struggling as it was one of the University's smallest departments (financially and with lackluster productions). Seay was quick to propose changes to the Theatre Department, which included a revised curriculum that included a Bachelor of Arts degree which started in Fall 1993. He also urged the administration for a musical theatre concentration that finally came into fruition in Fall 1998. Donald Seay wanted six full-scale productions, which needed the financial approval of the administration, and included two more faculty members for the department. Seay also introduced a Summer theatre program with a summer season of four productions that included students, faculty, and guest artists. Over the 23 years of Dr. Seay's stay at UCF, the Theatre Department has grown tremendously."," Donald Seay started out as an actor, with his first notable role being Bernard in Arthur Miller's Death of a Salesman . While acting, and doing technical work on the side, he received his bachelor's degree from Southern Mississippi in 1961. He then went off to work in several theatres, including the Alley Theatre in Houston, Playhouse in the Park in Cincinnati and the McCarter Theatre in Princeton, N.J. Deciding to forgo the life and career of an actor, Seay returned to school and received his MFA from Southern Miss, in 1973. He went on to teach at several universities across the country including St. Edward's University in Austin, where he began his career in administration. Seay received his doctorate in 1987 from Texas Tech University and found himself as the chairman and artistic director of the of the theatre program at Otterbein College in Westerville, Ohio. Wanting to help a department grow, Seay left Otterbein for UCF, whose theatre department was struggling. During Seay's tenure as chair of the UCF Theatre Department, he directed a plethora of plays and helped the department become rather successful. A few of the plays included were Dracula , Taffetas , The Lark , Les Liaisons Dangereuses , and The Lady's Not for Burning . After stepping down as chair of the department, Seay went on to teach at UCF for another decade, continued to direct plays at the university and promoted the growth of UCF Theatre."," In addition to directing plays and acting as chairman of the UCF Theatre Department, Dr. Donald Seay worked to connect the department with outside sources of entertainment that could bring increased funding and opportunities to students and faculty. Through Disney, numerous scholarships and internships were awarded to Theatre UCF. Seay was also a member of the UCF Theatre Guild, which was an organization that was firmly behind promoting the awareness of The University Theatre in the Orlando community, supporting the growth of the Theatre Foundation Fund, and volunteerism among guild members for the benefit of the Department of Theatre at the University of Central Florida.","Collection processed by and finding aid prepared by Brandon Lynch in 2019. After transferring to Isaiah Blocker Junior High School in 1955, at age eleven, his history teacher Rutledge Henry Pearson encouraged him to join the local NAACP Youth Council. By the time he was fifteen, Mr. Hurst was named president of the youth council chapter.","In 1960, Hurst led the lunch counter sit in demonstrations in downtown Jacksonville's shopping districts. The first one began on August 13, 1960. They targeted the Woolworth's counter. In addition, demonstrations were held at Cohen Bros, WT Grant Department Store, Kness Department Store, and McCrory Department Store. \n \nIn response, the stores closed their lunch counters and thus fueled the tensions that coalesced on August 27 also known as Ax Handle Saturday when 200 segregationists, armed with ax handles and baseball bats attacked 35 members of the NAACP youth council and other Black Americans who happened to be in the area.\n \nEventually, the police closed off downtown and the sit ins ceased. Then on December 8, 1960, Rodney Hurst was arrested for his part in the demonstrations and charged with instigating a riot. The charges were dropped after his hearing and was released. By May 16, 1961, all lunch counters in Jacksonville were integrated due to Mr. Hurst and the Youth Council's efforts.\n \nIn subsequent years, Mr. Hurst sat on the Jacksonville Civil Council and represented District 8 from 1975-1979 and District 10 from 1979-1983. \n \nLater in 2008, he authored a semi-autobiographical account of his experiences called \"It Was Never About a Hot Dog and a Coke!\" The book garnered recognition at the Sabrina Awards Best Non Fiction and Top Three Pick On July 31st that same year.","In addition, Mr. Hurst received awards for his participation in the 2009 Writer's Digest 16th Annual Self-Published Book awards, the ENAABLE and Blue Cross Blue Shield of Florida Black History Month Celebration. Due to his efforts in civil rights history, the Durkeeville Historical Society awarded Mr. Hurst a certificate of appreciation.","In 2010, Mr. Hurst participated in the University of Central Florida Book Festival and in 2012, he taught a course about Ax Handle Saturday and the Jacksonville sit ins at the University of North Florida.","Recently, in 2018, the Jacksonville Task Force on Civil Rights History was created. Mr. Hurst served as the co chair of the taskforce's historical timeline subcommittee and created a chronology of civil rights history in Jacksonville from 1838 with the founding of Bethel Baptist Institutional Church to the present. ","The collection consists of papers and memorabilia related to civil rights history in Jacksonville and Hurst's experiences as a member of the NAACP Youth Council in the 1960's. The collection focuses on the NAACP sit-ins of stores in James Weldon Johnson Park, formerly known as Hemming Park or Plaza, and Hurst's book about Ax Handle Saturday.","Materials in the collection may be subject to copyright and are to be used for private study, scholarship, or research in accordance with the copyright law of the United States (Title 17, United States Code).
