His grandfather, Robert Joseph Mette, was a fireman in Jacksonville during the 1901 fire and his father Robert Holland Mette captained a tugboat for over 50 years on the St. Johns River.  ","Mette went to school and college locally, eventually settling in Jacksonville near the San Marco area where he was born. While in junior college he became involved in politics, working on Bruce Smathers' Campaign during his bid for State Senate. He later worked as Senator Smathers' administrative aide.  He continued his involvement in local politics and managed Congressman Bill Chappell's reelection to Congress.  ","Richard Mette worked for the Amtrak Regional Jacksonville Office during the 1980's and, in 1986, worked in marketing as a lobbyist to maintain Amtrak's Jacksonville office. He was appointed by Mayor Tommy Hazouri as a Division Chief for the city of Jacksonville and later worked for the State Attorney's Office as an administrator in the Special Prosecution Division targeting consumer fraud in Jacksonville. Mette worked from 1991-2015 in the State Attorney's Office.  ","Richard Mette was involved in the local Jacksonville community. He was a founder and President of the Northeast Florida Consumer Council. Mette served as a Trustee for the Robert A. Mette Memorial Award and Scholarship, which is awarded annually.","Upon retirement Mette was able to spend more time collecting and selling antiques. He focused on locating historic Jacksonville memorabilia. His goal was to use these special historical treasures to show the history of our city.","The materials in this collection were collected and curated by Richard H. Mette. Mette was a lifelong Jacksonville resident and has family ties to the area going back several generations. ","He channeled his interest in the region in to collecting memorabilia and ephemera that are representative of the businesses and attractions of the region. The majority of the collection served as souvenirs to Jacksonville and the surrounding cities in Northeast Florida. ","Included in the collection is Mr. Mette's research materials that provide additional background of the items represented in this collection.","The Collection consists of 3-dimensional objects, correspondence, printed materials and books covering a variety of topics on Northeast Florida. Collection restrictions, copyright limitations, or technical complications may hinder the SPCUA's ability to provide access to unprocessed born digital materials.","Dr. Zerney Burns Barnes, Jr., FACS (Fellow of the American College of Surgeons) was born on August 8, 1925 to Eunice Pipkin and Zerney B. Barnes, Sr. and was the eldest of their four children. Zerney spent his childhood nearby and on the Florida Southern College campus. Zerney Barnes, Jr. graduated from Lakeland High School in January 1942. Shortly after his\nhigh school graduation, he began at Florida Southern in March 1942 and attended from 1942- 1943. Barnes left Florida Southern in June 1943 in order to join the Navy's V-12 College Training Program to become a medical officer. In July 1943, Barnes entered the University of Miami as part of the V-12 program. He graduated, after a short 31 months, in 1944 with a Bachelor of Science in Biology and Chemistry with a minor in Physics. While at the University of Miami, he was the President of Sigma Chi, and a member of the Iron Arrow honor society, the National Honor Society, and the Chemistry Honor Club. He was also a member of the University's football team. Barnes continued in the Navy's V-12 program for graduate school and was admitted into\nEmory University. After 1945 and the end of World War II, he was honorably discharged. While at Emory, he received a Research Fellowship with the Department of Medicine's Department of Bacteriology and Virology at the Grady Hospital in his junior year. He was also a president of Alpha Omega Alpha honor society in his junior year and was a member of Phi Chi medical\nfraternity. While working at the Grady Hospital during his senior year, Barnes met his wife Frances Shaw, and the couple married on December 27, 1949. Barnes graduated from Emory in 1950 with his M.D., which he had self-funded through internships and various work opportunities. In August 1951, Frances gave birth to the couple's first daughter Beryl. In 1952, Dr. Barnes was drafted\ninto the Korean War and sent to Florida to the Jacksonville Naval Base in July 1952. Frances gave birth to their second daughter Roxanne soon after the family arrived in Jacksonville, and Dr. Barnes was then deployed to the Canal Zone in Panama. Alongside him were his wife and two young daughters. In April 1954, Dr. Barnes was discharged early and the family returned to the United States, where he resumed his residency at the Kennedy VA Hospital in Memphis,\nTennessee. Dr. Barnes finished his residency, and in 1959, he and his family moved to Selma, Alabama where he began working at a private surgical practice. He later moved to the Jackson Hospital in Montgomery, Alabama.\nPrior to his retirement in 1984, Dr. Barnes, performed a variety of different surgery types and published 22 research articles in various medical journals. He was a board certified surgeon and a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons. Dr. Barnes, passed away in May, 2020 at the age of 94.\nThrough his mother, Dr. Zerney Barnes, Jr. was a member of the Pipkin family, which has had a close relationship with Florida Southern College since the College's early days in Sutherland, Florida. His grandfather Levi Nathaniel Pipkin became one of Southern College's trustees in 1910, a few years after the college's arrival in Sutherland. From there, L.N. Pipkin sent all six\nof his children to the College, with four of his daughters earning degrees. His children were Juanita (Class of 1912), Luther Nathaniel (Attended), Thelma (Attended), Eunice (Class of 1922), Bernice (Class of 1923), and Ruth (Class of 1929). As a trustee and Vice-Chairman of the Board, L.N. Pipkin was crucial to the success of the College after it suffered multiple disasters in the early 1920s. L.N. Pipkin, along with fellow trustees E.E. Edge and E.T. While at the University of Miami, he was the President of Sigma Chi, and a member of the Iron Arrow honor society, the National Honor Society, and the Chemistry Honor Club. He was also a member of the University's football team. Barnes continued in the Navy's V-12 program for graduate school and was admitted into\nEmory University. After 1945 and the end of World War II, he was honorably discharged. While at Emory, he received a Research Fellowship with the Department of Medicine's Department of Bacteriology and Virology at the Grady Hospital in his junior year. He was also a president of Alpha Omega Alpha honor society in his junior year and was a member of Phi Chi medical\nfraternity. While working at the Grady Hospital during his senior year, Barnes met his wife Frances Shaw, and the couple married on December 27, 1949. Barnes, Sr. and was the eldest of their four children. Zerney spent his childhood nearby and on the Florida Southern College campus. Zerney Barnes, Jr. graduated from Lakeland High School in January 1942. Shortly after his\nhigh school graduation, he began at Florida Southern in March 1942 and attended from 1942- 1943. Barnes left Florida Southern in June 1943 in order to join the Navy's V-12 College Training Program to become a medical officer. In July 1943, Barnes entered the University of Miami as part of the V-12 program. He graduated, after a short 31 months, in 1944 with a Bachelor of Science in Biology and Chemistry with a minor in Physics. While at the University of Miami, he was the President of Sigma Chi, and a member of the Iron Arrow honor society, the National Honor Society, and the Chemistry Honor Club. He was also a member of the University's football team. Barnes continued in the Navy's V-12 program for graduate school and was admitted into\nEmory University. After 1945 and the end of World War II, he was honorably discharged. While at Emory, he received a Research Fellowship with the Department of Medicine's Department of Bacteriology and Virology at the Grady Hospital in his junior year. He was also a president of Alpha Omega Alpha honor society in his junior year and was a member of Phi Chi medical\nfraternity. While working at the Grady Hospital during his senior year, Barnes met his wife Frances Shaw, and the couple married on December 27, 1949. Barnes graduated from Emory in 1950 with his M.D., which he had self-funded through internships and various work opportunities. In August 1951, Frances gave birth to the couple's first daughter Beryl. In 1952, Dr. Barnes was drafted\ninto the Korean War and sent to Florida to the Jacksonville Naval Base in July 1952. Frances gave birth to their second daughter Roxanne soon after the family arrived in Jacksonville, and Dr. Barnes was then deployed to the Canal Zone in Panama. Alongside him were his wife and two young daughters. In April 1954, Dr. Barnes was discharged early and the family returned to the United States, where he resumed his residency at the Kennedy VA Hospital in Memphis,\nTennessee. Dr. Barnes finished his residency, and in 1959, he and his family moved to Selma, Alabama where he began working at a private surgical practice. He later moved to the Jackson Hospital in Montgomery, Alabama.\nPrior to his retirement in 1984, Dr. Barnes, performed a variety of different surgery types and published 22 research articles in various medical journals. He was a board certified surgeon and a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons. Dr. Barnes, passed away in May, 2020 at the age of 94.\nThrough his mother, Dr. Zerney Barnes, Jr. was a member of the Pipkin family, which has had a close relationship with Florida Southern College since the College's early days in Sutherland, Florida. His grandfather Levi Nathaniel Pipkin became one of Southern College's trustees in 1910, a few years after the college's arrival in Sutherland. From there, L.N. Pipkin sent all six\nof his children to the College, with four of his daughters earning degrees. His children were Juanita (Class of 1912), Luther Nathaniel (Attended), Thelma (Attended), Eunice (Class of 1922), Bernice (Class of 1923), and Ruth (Class of 1929). As a trustee and Vice-Chairman of the Board, L.N. Pipkin was crucial to the success of the College after it suffered multiple disasters in the early 1920s. L.N. Pipkin, along with fellow trustees E.E. Edge and E.T.
