His half uncle, José Manuel Alemán, served in the Cuban government as Minister of Education during the presidency of Dr. Ramón Grau San Martin, president of the Authentic Party (Partido Auténtico) in La Habana, and Senator of the Republic. His family went through three generations of leaders and fighters for Cuban independence through revolutions or preserving its history and culture.","He rested on February 22, 2013 in Miami, Florida. He survived his wife named Lidia Llano who he married on September 22, 1945 and left a son named Carlos Guerra Llano. He left a mark of what he had done, significant work in Cuba's history. However, he has not been given as much attention as he deserves in any setting, especially in academia. It is the many aspects of unknown history and researching the people from below like Alemán. He was a Cuban, veteran, journalist, nontraditional historian, and founder of a journalist business.

José Guerra Alemán Collection, Special Collections and UniversityArchives, University of Central Florida, Orlando, Florida.

José Guerra Alemán Collection, Special Collections and UniversityArchives, University of Central Florida, Orlando, Florida.

Materials are housed in acid free folders and boxes; photographs and negatives were placed in clear sleeves; publications removed from the collection and cataloged separately.

Processing Information
Materials are housed in acid free folders and boxes; photographs and negatives were placed in clear sleeves; publications removed from the collection and cataloged separately.

Books collected by José Guerra Alemán can be found by performing a series search for "José Guerra Alemán Collection" in the UCF Libraries catalog.

Related Materials
Books collected by José Guerra Alemán can be found by performing a series search for "José Guerra Alemán Collection" in the UCF Libraries catalog.

This collection was arranged in seven series:

","

Series I. Please contact lib-special@unf.edu to schedule an appointment","The Southeastern Fisheries Association (SFA) was founded in 1952 and is based in Tallahassee, Florida. Since its inception, SFA has been dedicated to supporting the interests of the commercial fishing industry in the southeastern United States, with a focus on Florida. Through advocacy and collaboration, the association works to address key issues affecting fisheries management and promote sustainable practices within the industry.

SFA played a large role in the historic 1994 Florida case that approved Amendment 3, also known as the Net Ban. This ban limited the use of entangling nets in Florida waters and had a significant impact on commercial fishermen and consumers of seafood. Members of SFA challenged the amendment through the legal system to try and prevent the implementation of such a ban, but on July 1st, 1995, the use of gill and trammel nets in Florida waters were ultimately outlawed. For years to come, members of SFA would continue to fight the net ban in Florida and to try and prevent similar outcomes in the rest of the southeast. Documents in this collection show their efforts. ","In addition to their other lobbying work, the SFA focused on the Magnuson-Stevens Act, also referred to as the Magnuson Act. The act was a precursor to the Net Ban and affected the fishing community for decades. Originally passed in 1976, its primary objective was to prevent overfishing. Federally declared a "fishing disaster" for the harm it caused to the fishing industry in the Northeast United States, many commercial fishermen, like most members of the SFA, strongly opposed this act for its lack of protection, transparency, and it's extremely stringent rules, as reflected throughout this collection. ","SFA was involved in many outreach programs throughout the southeast region that involved activities like education, trade, conservation, and various other efforts. Robert P. Jones, donor of this collection, served as president of SFA from 1964 to 2018. Throughout his 54 years of leadership, Jones' engagement with seafood industry stakeholders has been foundational to the organization's influence on both the commercial fishing culture and seafood production in the United States. ","The Southeastern Fisheries Association remains active today, dedicated to supporting, safeguarding, and advancing the commercial fishing industry across the southeastern United States. It represents harvesters, packers, processors, distributors, and restaurants focused on preserving fishery resources, the livelihoods of fishermen, and the wellbeing of fishing communities. Here you can find a link to their website for more information on their organization: SFA Website","This collection is home to a selection of documents from the Southeastern Fisheries Association (SFA), the oldest affiliation representing the commercial seafood and fishing industries throughout the southeastern United States.
