Emmanuel's love of history began in childhood when his father Emanuel George Sr. would teach him Black history in efforts to highlight what he thought Emmanuel would not be taught in public school. Emmanuel credits his father's teachings to his ability to seek out overlooked narratives.","In 2015, after taking a leave of absence from pursuing his Bachelors in Film from Full Sail University, Emmanuel found himself joining a group of local activists in Miami -Dade County who were advocating on behalf of its residents to fight displacement. During this time, Emmanuel spoke with local residents and learned about the history of Black Miami. This curiosity led Emmanuel to begin submerging himself in learning the Black history of his home community, Broward County. ","In 2016, Emmanuel George produced his first film under the Black Broward Film Project, entitled A Tale of Sibling Communities; Danie and Liberia a documentary about the shared relationship between two Black communities in Broward County. The film featured oral interviews of local pioneers and historical landmarks that are staples to the community. Emmanuel followed this up with his 2021 film entitled Stories from our Ancestors: An Ode to Attucks High School; a film focusing on how the closing of a historically Black High school impacted the community of Liberia and its neighboring communities: Danie, Carver Ranches, Hallandale, Ojus, and Davie. ","In 2021, under the mentorship of esteemed historian Kitty Oliver, Emmanuel landed a fellowship with Lake Wales Museum where he interviewed and archived stories of residents from the historic Lincoln Avenue community. From there, Emmanuel would complete a fellowship with Cogenerators (formerly Encore) and work with Florida International University's Wolfson Public Humanities Lab, the Delray Beach Historical Society, the African American Research Library and the Old Dillard Museum, further expanding the ways he shares and preserves local Black history. Most recently, Emmanuel completed a fellowship with Temple University, serving as the Community Archivist for the Association for the Study of African American Life and History (ASALH). \nCurrently, Emmanuel founded and runs the Black Orchid Foundation, a non-profit centered on preserving the stories of Black high schools in the south that were phased out after the supreme court case of Brown vs. Board of Education, ruling that separating children in public schools on the basis of race was unconstitutional. Emmanuel is also the youngest person in Broward County to have his own special collections archive, the Emmanuel George Collection at the African American Research Library, where he actively collects physical and digitally archived data on the history of Attucks High School. ","Emmanuel's goal is to continue bridging the generational divide by connecting the youth from the rising Black Student Union populations in Broward County with the pioneers from the Historic Black High Schools (Attucks, Dillard, and Blanche Ely) through an Oral History workshop, in hopes to inspire young archivists to narrate their own stories and preserve their history at the African American Research Library and Cultural Center.","This collection received file processing. On the day of December 7, 1941, he was working on bridge construction in Fredericksburg, VA, where he also lived in a boarding house. Meekins, Jr. enlisted in the U.S. Army Air Corps on December 29, 1941, and received basic training at Ft. Jackson, SC where he qualified for the enlisted pilot program. In spring 1942, he attended basic Army Air Corps training for five months at Shepherd Field, TX. Afterwards, Meekins, Jr. transferred to the Army Air Corps Cadet training at Kelly Field, San Antonio, TX. for two months, then returned back to Shepherd Field. He received additional training at English Field, Amarillo, TX, Chanute Field, IL, OSS Power Plant Specialist School, Wright Field, Dayton, OH, Camp Campbell, TN, Aiken, SC Army Air Corps Field, Key Field, Meridian, MS, and Kerns, Utah for weapons training.\n Meekins, Jr. was transferred overseas in the fall of 1943 to the North African Campaign for five months before being transferred to Alipore Air Base in India as part of the 10th Air Force. Here he flew PBY-5A Catalinas for air-sea rescue. Meekins, Jr. then transferred to Assam, India, for four months. In late 1944 to early 1945, he transferred to Myitkyina Base in Burma for six months, and then Bhamo, Burma. While stationed at Bhamo during a Japanese siege, Meekins, Jr. discovered the Japanese lithograph print of a woman in a former Japanese military dugout. He was last assigned to Kunming, China, for three months in late 1945. Meekins, Jr. returned to the U.S. in December 1945 and was discharged.\n After the war, Meekins became a pioneer highway contractor for the State of South Carolina for more than 30 years, while working on the State's primary highway system. He was the owner of Swain Construction Company in Kingstree and St. Matthews, SC. Meekins, Jr. passed away on January 17, 2017. He was married for 41 years to Delores Gwen Mitchum Meekins.\n The author of the painting discovered by Meekins, Jin Meisheng (1902-1989), was a well known Chinese artist, who was a native from Shanghai. From 1920 onward, he painted calendar posters exclusively for the Commercial Press in Shanghai. In 1930, he established his own studio. Together with Jin Xuechen and Li Mubai, he was known as one of the \"Three Pillars of Calendar Posters.\" From the 1950s onward, Jin was attached to the Shanghai People's Fine Arts Publishing House. Jin was able to assimilate Chinese traditional painting and Western watercolor in his works despite their separate and unique styles. After 1949, Jin joined the Chinese Artists Association; he became a member of the Standing Council and art advisor of the Shanghai Branch of the Association.
