He was raised in Jacksonville, Florida, and received his bachelor's degree in political science from the University of Florida in 1953. After graduation, Sessums was commissioned as a 2 nd  Lieutenant in the United States Air Force. He was stationed in Alabama for three years before returning to the University of Florida to obtain his law degree, which he received in 1958. His legal career began in Tampa, where he gained exposure to Hillsborough County politics while working at the law firm of Hardee and Ott. During the 1959 and 1961 legislative sessions, Sessums worked as a legislative aide to former Senator Sam Gibbons, who played a key role in the establishment of the University of South Florida.  In 1963, Sessums was elected to the Florida House of Representatives, where he served as Speaker pro tempore from 1968 to 1970 and Speaker of the House from 1972 to 1974. During this time, Sessums remained greatly concerned with education in Florida.  He served as chairman of the House Education Committee from 1970 to 1972, and was particularly active in pressing for more equitable allocation of education funds. He was raised in Jacksonville, Florida, and received his bachelor's degree in political science from the University of Florida in 1953. He was stationed in Alabama for three years before returning to the University of Florida to obtain his law degree, which he received in 1958. His legal career began in Tampa, where he gained exposure to Hillsborough County politics while working at the law firm of Hardee and Ott. During the 1959 and 1961 legislative sessions, Sessums worked as a legislative aide to former Senator Sam Gibbons, who played a key role in the establishment of the University of South Florida. Walter (1900-1981) was Editor of the University of Michigan Press when he retired in 1970. Dorothy (1903-1994) was an award-winning poet. They have three sons, Jerome, Stephen, and Denis.","\nIn 1931 Dorothy and Walter were married, Dorothy completed her Master's Degree from the University of Michigan, and she won the Avery Hopwood Contest. The $1,500 prize enabled the couple to live in France and Italy for a time. Dorothy wrote several acclaimed books of poetry as well as numerous articles for the magazine transition (always spelled in the lower case), publishing work by writers such as Hart Crane, Ernest Hemingway and Carl Jung. Eugene Jolas, the French editor of transition, wrote Dorothy in 1931, \"You are the only one in America whose writing seems to me to be going in the right direction.\"","\nWalter also published some poetry and wrote plays with playwright and screenwriter Paul Osborn when the two were in college at the University of Michigan. In his early career, Dr. Nathan wrote several textbooks dealing with English grammar and style, and literary interpretation of the short story and poetry while continuing to write poetry and short stories.","Dr. Nathan published several books of poetry in addition to publishing over 450 poems in various publications. He has published over 22 short stories. In addition to the unpublished poems and short stories in the collection, it also contains his unpublished memoirs and novels.
