Peter's childhood was greatly influenced by the outdoors, and his family ties to St. Petersburg led him to dedicate his life and career to environmental activism in Florida. He attended Florida Presbyterian College (and graduated from the newly renamed Eckerd College) with a bachelor's degree in political science and attended Stetson Law and Florida State University College of Law. Peter completed an internship with the Public Defender's office in Bradenton, FL, leading to a permanent position as a trial lawyer for the Manatee County Public Defender's Office. Throughout his time as a trial lawyer, Peter remained involved in environmental and historic preservation efforts locally and in Florida. Peter helped form historic preservation organizations in St. Petersburg including Booker Creek Preservation, Save Our St. Petersburg (SOS), and St. Petersburg Preservation, Inc. (SPP), now known as Preserve the 'Burg (PTB).
