Smithers Hughes in honor of her late husband Dr. Ausker E. Hughes.\nDr. Hughes had been a chemist with the United States Department of Agriculture in Orlando,\nFlorida. While there, he began to develop a budwood cross between Valencia and Parson\nBrown oranges. After his death in 1944, Lena Hughes continued her husband's work, even\nthough it did not prove successful at first. However, in 1955, the USDA and Florida's Division\nof Plant Industry's Budwood Registration Program became interested in the Hughes's\nbudwood because of a need for virus-free budwood. After passing five years of testing, in\n1960, the Hughes Budwood began to be distributed across growers in Florida. Today, it is the\nmost prolific version of the Valencia orange across Florida and can be found in many other\ncountries as well. The proceeds of the sales of this budwood led to the creation of Hughes\nMemorial Foundation, Inc. to provide scholarships for undergraduate students in citrus and\nagricultural programs at both Florida Southern College and the University of Florida. The\nFoundation's first scholarship was given at Florida Southern in 1965, and in 1966, scholarships\nwould be given the University of Florida for undergraduate and graduate students as well. In\n2007, ownership of the Foundation was transferred to the Florida Citrus Nurserymen's\nAssociation, and by 2008, the transfer process had been completed thus ending the Hughes\nMemorial Foundation.","For more information on Secretary/Treasurer Charles Youtsey, please see the Charles\nYoutsey Papers.","Materials in this collection were organized chronologically and broken down into the following\nseries:\nThe History of the Foundation series contains biographical information about Lena\nand Ausker Hughes as well as information about Hughes Budwood and the Foundation.\nThe Board Meetings series contains meeting minutes from the annual meetings of the\nBoard. Also in this series may be materials passed out at the meeting such as the\nannual Treasurer's Report. File names in this series are reflective of the title given to the\nmeeting by the Directors as indicated in the meeting minutes.\nThe Financial Records series contains tax documentation, bank records, and\ncorrespondence related to financial matters of the organization.\nThe Scholarships series primarily contains correspondence between the Foundation\nand the schools that receive funding for scholarships: Florida Southern College and\nthe University of Florida. The Other Institutions subseries includes information on\ninstitutions and organizations that inquired about Foundation funding but were ultimately\nunsuccessful.","Permission to publish material from the Hughes Memorial Foundation, Inc. On the day of December 7, 1941, he was working on bridge construction in Fredericksburg, VA, where he also lived in a boarding house. Meekins, Jr. enlisted in the U.S. Army Air Corps on December 29, 1941, and received basic training at Ft. Jackson, SC where he qualified for the enlisted pilot program. In spring 1942, he attended basic Army Air Corps training for five months at Shepherd Field, TX. Afterwards, Meekins, Jr. transferred to the Army Air Corps Cadet training at Kelly Field, San Antonio, TX. for two months, then returned back to Shepherd Field. He received additional training at English Field, Amarillo, TX, Chanute Field, IL, OSS Power Plant Specialist School, Wright Field, Dayton, OH, Camp Campbell, TN, Aiken, SC Army Air Corps Field, Key Field, Meridian, MS, and Kerns, Utah for weapons training.\n Meekins, Jr. was transferred overseas in the fall of 1943 to the North African Campaign for five months before being transferred to Alipore Air Base in India as part of the 10th Air Force. Here he flew PBY-5A Catalinas for air-sea rescue. Meekins, Jr. then transferred to Assam, India, for four months. In late 1944 to early 1945, he transferred to Myitkyina Base in Burma for six months, and then Bhamo, Burma. While stationed at Bhamo during a Japanese siege, Meekins, Jr. discovered the Japanese lithograph print of a woman in a former Japanese military dugout. He was last assigned to Kunming, China, for three months in late 1945. Meekins, Jr. returned to the U.S. in December 1945 and was discharged.\n After the war, Meekins became a pioneer highway contractor for the State of South Carolina for more than 30 years, while working on the State's primary highway system. He was the owner of Swain Construction Company in Kingstree and St. Matthews, SC. Meekins, Jr. passed away on January 17, 2017. He was married for 41 years to Delores Gwen Mitchum Meekins.\n The author of the painting discovered by Meekins, Jin Meisheng (1902-1989), was a well known Chinese artist, who was a native from Shanghai. From 1920 onward, he painted calendar posters exclusively for the Commercial Press in Shanghai. In 1930, he established his own studio. Together with Jin Xuechen and Li Mubai, he was known as one of the \"Three Pillars of Calendar Posters.\" From the 1950s onward, Jin was attached to the Shanghai People's Fine Arts Publishing House. Jin was able to assimilate Chinese traditional painting and Western watercolor in his works despite their separate and unique styles. After 1949, Jin joined the Chinese Artists Association; he became a member of the Standing Council and art advisor of the Shanghai Branch of the Association. His works, for which he won prizes during national competitions, have been included in a number of national collections.","Note written by Johnette D.
