The first series includes documents from work conducted at the sanctuary proper, though additional related documents may be found in the subject files. Within series, folders are arranged alphabetically.","Audubon Florida's Corkscrew Swamp Sanctuary is a site which had been protected by Audubon wardens since the 1910s. With no interest from the state in preserving the area, Audubon Florida founded the sanctuary in the mid-1950s. From an initial 5,000 acres, it was expanded to more than 13,000 acres. It is especially notable for its bald cypress forest and cypress domes, the only part of the original Fakahatchee cypress strand in the area to be preserved from logging, which commenced in 1944. As part of the Corkscrew watershed, the sanctuary is part of the western Everglades. To save the remaining cypress and vital habitat from destruction, Audubon led an effort to raise money to buy the property. By 1954, 5,680 acres were accumulated, the last virgin cypress forest in the entire world and the most important Wood Stork rookery in the U.S. When offered the property, the state of Florida expressed no interest in the site, so Audubon took ownership. By the 1970s and 80s, development had altered the local landscape and made the sanctuary a much less isolated site. Under the leadership of Executive Director (and longtime Audubon employee) Ed Carlson in the 1980s and 90s, the sanctuary incoroporated more formal education programs, a visitor center, and a boardwalk that provides a scenic tour of parts of the property. These records document the activities of the sanctuary, including habitat studies, research materials, educational records, correspondence, and general management of the site, from invasive species mitigation to controlled burns.","The Audubon Florida Corkscrew Swamp Sanctuary Records donation included published book materials that are being processed for inclusion into the collection and will be traced on this record.","This collection consists of organizational papers, scientific data, field notebooks, correspondence, photographs and photographic slides, maps, and clippings.","Maps and publications related to the archival collection are cataloged individually and shelved in the Environment and Natural History Collection. Barron Jr. was born in Newnan, Georgia on November 4, 1911, and had a career as a store manager before joining the United States Army in 1943. He married Virginia Dixon Culbreath on January 14, 1940. Due to this administrative background, he was made an Induction Leader and entered technical school at Camp Lee. Barron was then moved to Fort Knox and entered the 552nd Railhead Company as a replacement. He was then shipped to Northern Ireland and made the crossing on the Monarch of Bermuda, or the \"Showboat,\" so called because it carried the cast of Irving Berlin's \"This is the Army.\" In May 1944 he was attached to the First Engineer Special Brigade Force U for the D-Day invasion and landed on D+3. He served in locations such as St. Marie du Mont, St. Mere Eglise, St. Lo, Soissons, Liege, Frankfurt, and Cassel.\n It is likely that his company replaced the combat engineers from the First Engineer Special Brigade who were lost in Exercise Tiger , as he mentions that he had to replace trained combat engineers who were lost in an \"attempted invasion or a dry run a few weeks before the invasion (D-Day).\" Notably, Barron had no amphibious combat training prior to his involvement in the beach landing. The six animals were the first of over 1,000 to be housed at the Crandon Park Zoological Gardens in Key Biscayne. The investment proved successful, as the Zoo gained momentum within its community and housed the first successful captive birth of an Aardvark in North America.","After Hurricane Betsy hit Miami in 1965, over 200 animals met their unfortunate demise and prompted the zoo officials, alongside the Zoological Society of Florida, to propose a relocation of the Zoo in order to prevent future casualties of zoo residents. In 1972, through the \"Item Nine\" referendum, Miami-Dade County approved the relocation of Crandon Park Zoo from Key Biscayne to its current home in South Miami. Construction took almost a decade to complete, and in 1980, the doors opened to the new Miami Metrozoo.","Since opening its doors in 1980, Miami Metrozoo has had 800,000 annual visitors, and has reached over 15 million people of all ages. Their conservation programs are alive not just locally, but on a global level, with over 30 programs on six continents.
