Mahan, M.D., Professor and Dean Emeritus, USF College of Public and The Lawton and Rhea Chiles Center for Healthy Mothers and Babies is Dean and Professor Emeritus in the College of Public Health at the University of South Florida and The Lawton and Rhea Chiles Center for Healthy Mothers and Babies.  He holds a joint appointment as Professor, Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology in the USF College of Medicine and currently serves as Interim President of the National Board of Public Health Examiners.  Dr. Mahan received his MD degree from Northwestern University and did his residency training at the University of Minnesota where he returned to join the faculty. He moved to Florida in 1974 to be Professor of Obstetrics and Gynecology and Director of Ambulatory Services for Women at the University of Florida and Director of the North Central Florida Maternal and Infant Care Program. From 1988 to 1995 he directed the State Health Department in Florida, and he was Dean of the College of Public Health at the University of South Florida from 1995 to 2002.  He is Past President of the Association of State and Territorial Health Officials and Chair of the Advisory Committee to the Director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention from 1997-2003.  He is on the Board of Directors of the Frontier Nursing Service, the National Perinatal Information Center and The Ounce of Prevention Fund of Florida. Dr. Mahan served as founding statewide chairperson for the March of Dimes Florida Prematurity Prevention Campaign. He had earned his undergraduate degree (B.A.) at Colorado State University in 1964. He then attended the University of Nebraska, earning an M.A. in 1968 and a Ph.D. in History in 1971 from that institution. As he searched for a job in 1971, he decided to apply to USF St. Petersburg because it was one of only three institutions in the United States that was recruiting in his field of medieval history. After accepting an offer to join the faculty as an Assistant Professor of History, he left the land of the Cornhuskers for the Sunshine City. ","By 2009, Dr. Carr held rank as the most senior faculty member in terms of service at USF St. Petersburg, and joined a small group of USFSP employees with more than thirty-five years of employment on campus. Although hired to teach medieval history, he once remarked that the teaching demands on a small regional campus led to expectations that he would cover a broad range of subjects from \"Mesopotamia to Megalopolis.\" His primary areas for teaching and research were medieval, Renaissance, and Reformation history, as well as urban, social, intellectual, and constitutional history. She attended college at the University of Florida where she received several degrees, including the Master's and Doctorate of Philosophy degrees. She was a professor of Rhetoric and Public Address at University of Florida and Florida State College at Jacksonville, where she was elected Professor Emeritus following her retirement in December 2007. ","\nDr. Saffy was a founder of the National Organization for Women chapters in Jacksonville and Gainesville, as well as founder of the Jacksonville Women's Network. She was named \"A Woman of Courage and Vision\" by the Mayor's Commission on the Status of Women and the recipient of a Lifetime EVE Award by the Florida Times Union.\n    \n    As a humanitarian and activist, she served on numerous local, state, and national committees, including the John F. Kennedy Center Committee for the Performing Arts during the Clinton Administration, the Advisory Committee on LaVilla Cultural Heritage District, American Arab Institute, Duval County Democratic Executive Committee, and the Jacksonville Human Rights Commission. \n    \n    Dr. Saffy was also politically active. She led a 1975 march in Tallahassee in support of the Equal Rights Amendment. She served as a Florida delegate to the International Women's Conference and as a Florida State delegate in six Democratic National Conventions. She was also the president of the Florida Women's Political Caucus.
