The OSI was previously called the Office of Student Activities, but it was changed in 2003 to OSI. The mission of OSI is to provide programs, services, and leadership opportunities that enrich students' time at UCF. Their core values are connect, involve, and impact. As of 2021, the OSI promotes these values by collaborating with both students and staff to create and develop programs that contribute to students' personal growth, civic responsibility, and diversity awareness. As of 2021, the OSI oversees the registration and management of over 350 student organizations (academic, pre-professional, honorary, military, sports, religious, special interests, minority/interracial, and service groups). The OSI also advises the Campus Activities Board (CAB), Fraternity and Sorority Life, Homecoming, Knights of the RoundTable (KoRT), Late Knights, Multicultural Student Center (MSC), Student Government Association (SGA), and Volunteer UCF (VUCF)."," This collection holds a lot of material about Homecoming, which is the OSI's most recognizable event. Homecoming at UCF lasts for a week, leading up to the Homecoming football game of the year. Homecoming represents an opportunity for current students, staff, and alumni to come together and celebrate their time at UCF. Homecoming is one of UCF's oldest traditions, dating back to a mere three years after UCF first opened its doors. UCF held its first Homecoming in 1971 to coincide with the basketball season, which was UCF's first varsity sport. The first “skit knight” was held in 1971, which was known at the time as “Nite of Knights.” This has since become a staple in Homecoming week festivities. In 1975, UCF held its first Homecoming Parade. The parade was moved to downtown Orlando in 1992, but it was relocated back to UCF in 2007 to celebrate UCF's first on-campus football stadium. In 1980, UCF held two Homecomings to celebrate both the basketball and football seasons. Following the celebrations, Homecoming began to align itself with the football season. There was a brief gap in Homecoming from 1972-1974 when UCF put on an event called \"Kaleidoscope\" in its place. This event shared many of the same activities, but ultimately Homecoming was reinstated. "," Another important aspect of UCF's Homecoming week is the Spirit Splash. Spirit Splash is a beloved UCF tradition in which students gather around the fountain in front of the John C. Hitt Library and run into it. UCF also produces rubber ducks to throw into the fountain as a souvenir for the students participating. Spirit Splash takes place on the Friday before the homecoming football game. The origin of Spirit Splash was debated until 2021 when the University Archives did a deep dive in research and confirmed that the first time students were encouraged to jump into the pond was in 1994. It continued in 1995 when the second group of students jumped into the Reflecting Pond before Homecoming. The SGA received funding for the event and renamed it “Spirit Splash” in 1997."," The OSI has also put on programs such as Knight Camp in the past. Knight Camp was a four-day orientation camp that allowed new incoming students to meet each other and learn more about UCF in a camp-like setting. The students were also allowed to move into their housing placements early if they so wished. Knight Camp lasted from 2013-2016.","Processing History Collection processed by and finding aid prepared by Trinity Cruz in 2021. George himself served in the navy for more than three years as a weather forecaster; for part of the time he was on the USS Bairoko. After graduating from the University of California, Los Angeles with a degree in meteorology in 1955, George Millay worked for a stockbroking firm until 1960. He married Anne Real in 1963; they eventually had three sons and a daughter.","\nIn 1958, Millay opened the Reef restaurant in Los Angeles with David Tallichet. He planned to create a submarine bar there so that customers could view sea creatures while enjoying cocktails. The plan failed because the water in the harbor was too cloudy. However, his interest in marine life introduced him to Dr. Kenneth Norris, curator at Marineland. Together with Milton Shedd and David DeMott, they organized the Marine Park Corporation to create a marine park in San Diego. Sea World opened in 1964 and expanded in 1970 with a park in Ohio followed by the Orlando park in 1972. Sea World Inc. opened an amusement park in Valencia California on 29th May 1971 in partnership with Newhall Land and Farming. Officially named \"Magic Mountain\", the park was designated \"Tragic Mountain\" by a reporter who was injured there. Sea World did not make a profit on the venture and sold out to its partner late in 1971. Millay resigned from Sea World Inc in 1974 because of a disagreement with his partners over how the company should develop.","\nGeorge Millay had spent a lot of time at Sea World in Orlando, and he thought that families would enjoy water activities as a break from the Florida heat. He pulled together ideas from a water playground at the Toronto World's Fair, a flume near Sacramento and a wave pool in Alabama, added a children's playgound, restrooms, gift shop and snack bar to create a new concept. He formed the Leisure Marine Corporation to develop his idea. Initially, the company ran the Seven Seas park in Arlington, TX, for a season, but the venture did not develop further. Wet 'n Wild eventually became a reality in Orlando, where it opened in 1977. The company took over the failing Seven Seas park and redeveloped it into the second Wet 'n Wild in 1983 followed by Las Vegas in 1985. Additional sites opened in Garland, TX, Brazil and Mexico. and the last part of the collection is comprised of zines focused on the topics of rape culture and feminism, but are not a part of any collective or created in Southwest Florida, and they are examples of many types of home-publications as well as comics, orginial art, and personal ethnogrophies.","Zines, derived from \"magazines,\" are alternative publications constructed using inexpensive, easily accessible materials. Zines, as a genre, have historically been used by political, social, and counterculture movements to easily and inexpensively proliferate information. Zines are often created in a cooperative, utilizing multiple mediums of expression from poets, essayists, and visual artists. In 2017, the University Archives and Special Collections at FGCU began actively collecting zines to be included in the Spring 2018 exhibition Rape Culture. The collection has a strong focus on sexual assault, women's studies, and the LGBTQIA+ community. Note that language is a constantly evolving construct and therefore the tags, keywords, and subject headings attributed to the zines may be considered unacceptable by contemporary and future standards as well as social norms. The archives intent is to preserve the historical record which may include harmful language when viewed through a 21st century lens.
