Miscellaneous, 1987-2004","The Center is an Orlando-based LGBT+ organization that offers support and orchestrates events to improve the lives of the local LGBT+ community. ",""[The Center's] history begins on November 27, 1978, when the non-profit organization Gay Community Services (GCS) for safe space meetups was created. Later that year, Gay Men's Hotline was formed. The number was 407-THE-GAYS and was staffed by volunteers. Gay men could call for referrals, mental health counseling, and up-to-date information on GCS meetups. In 1980, women joined GCS, and the organization was renamed Gay & Lesbian Community Services (GLCS). In 1984, the focus of GLCS and the Gay Men's Hotline shifted to health and HIV/AIDS care. Our services to the community keep expanding. The organization moved to 1036 N. Mills Avenue in 1987. By 1990, GLCS reincorporated as the Gay, Lesbian & Bisexual Community Center of Central Florida (GLBCC-The Center), so the organization continues to grow, both in terms of human platform and infrastructure. In 1999, The Center purchased 942 and 946 N. Mills Avenue. In 2007, the organization changed its name to the Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual & Transgender Community Center of Central Florida, Inc. (GLBTCC). In 2014, the organization ventured to offer services with mobile units. In 2016, The Pulse Tragedy occurred in Orlando. President Obama called the Center "Ground Zero for community healing." Eleven years later, after its latest name change, in 2018, the organization changed its name to LGBT+ Center Orlando, Inc. (The Center Orlando) and opened The Center Kissimmee. Subsequently, in 2020, the Center partnered with AHF to provide testing at Out of the Closet (AHF). By 2021, the Center had been chosen to oversee Orlando United Assistance Center (now OURS), expand health services, and open its second downtown location on Hillcrest Street." ","Source: "About Us." The Center Orlando. After the U.S entry into the war on December 8, 1941, Larry, as he was called, joined the Navy on September 2, 1942, and served until January 12, 1946. He trained as an aircraft machinist for the U.S. Navy SBD-6 Douglas Dive bomber and served as an Aerial Gunner on sorties. In his 19 months of combat duty, he served in Guadalcanal and Bougainville in the Solomon Island chain, and in what was then called New Hebrides, now the nation of Vanuatu.","Borders flew 32 combat missions over the Solomon Islands before being restationed in the New Hebrides from May-December 1944. His flight squadron was attached primarily to the aircraft carrier U.S.S Franklin, but it is unknown if Borders was onboard when the Franklin was hit and nearly sunk on March 19, 1945. Borders served in Carrier Aircraft Service Units (CASU) 11 and 12.","He was discharged in 1946 with plenty of experience as an aircraft engine mechanic to help him find a job stateside. By the end of the war, Borders was awarded the Navy Good Conduct Ribbon, the Navy, and Marine Corps Commendation Medal (awarded to members of exemplary units) the American Campaign Medal (awarded to servicemen in 1942), the Asiatic Pacific Campaign Medal with four stars, and the World War II Victory Medal. Borders passed away on September 15, 2001, and is buried in Dugger Cemetery, Dugger, Indiana.","Transferred from the Institute on World War II and the Human Experience to FSU Libraries Special Collections & Archives in July 2022.","This extensive collection consists of 1 box of personal papers and 4 boxes of personal artifacts.
