By 1938, at the age of fifteen, Roper was working in the family groves, hoeing trees for 10 cents an hour. Roper attended Emory University where he received a chemistry degree shortly before joining the U.S. Navy. After serving in World War II, Roper attended the University of Pittsburgh where he worked on his master's degree. Roper was only able to spend one year working on this degree. He would later return to finish his degree in 1958.","In addition to working in his family's groves, Roper bought several of his own. The advent of frozen concentrate orange juice brought the need for new production facilities, and Roper was one of the first to operate a fully-functioning concentrate plant; the Winter Garden Citrus Products Cooperative. He spent four years with the Cooperative before returning to the Roper groves. During this time, Roper also became involved with several citrus groups including the Florida Citrus Processors Association and the National Juice Products Association.","In the 1970s Roper noticed the wastefulness of grove spraying, where a great deal of spray was not landing where it was needed. Roper began to develop a system using reflected light that would allow a computer to \"see\" where the targeted tree was, and turn on and shut off spray nozzles accordingly. Using technology from Kodak and the help of two engineers, Roper created the Tree-See system that could spray an acre of citrus with 10 gallons of liquid instead of the usual 250 gallons. Roper and his son Charlie built test designs in their home kitchen, and the final unit was tested and proved in the Roper family groves. The Tree-See system is lauded for being environmentally conscious and an effective cost-saver.","Roper is also well known for his concerns for migrant workers and their families. He was one of the first growers to establish health clinics and child care programs for migrant workers. Roper is also the namesake of the annual Bert E. Roper Humanitarian award that is given to a deserving migrant student in Orange County, Florida.","Some of Roper's most recent endeavors include developing an organic orange grove, constructing an environmentally green building in Winter Garden and reopening a North Carolina emerald mine to gem enthusiasts. Roper has been honored with induction into the Florida Agricultural Hall of Fame in 2001. In recognition of his many years of service to the Florida citrus industry, Bert Roper was inducted into the Florida Citrus Hall of Fame in 2004.\nBiographical Information found via Florida Citrus Hall of Fame website.","This collection contains information relating to Bert E. Roper's personal life, work life, and social work. It contains his many memberships in various citrus organizations as well as some of the projects he worked on for the Citrus Foundation, such as an advanced irrigation system. It also contains both records of his research and external studies he referenced. The bulk of the collection is focused on the welfare and faith life of the low-level citrus workers, specifically, those living in migrant communities. His correspondance details the work he and his network did in legal and professional fields to help the \"citrus worker.\" He also supported ministry initiatives to improve the faith life of migrant communities. Even his personal correspondance and photos demonstrate to his willingness to restructure the base of the citrus industry as a whole, for the betterment of all employees.","This collection is owned by Florida Southern College and is protected by copyright and/or related rights. Leeper was the founder of the Atlantic Center of the Arts, which resides in New Smyrna Beach, FL, and she was also crucial to the creation of Canaveral National Seashore and the Spruce Creek Preserve. In 1999, Doris Leeper was inducted into the Florida Artists Hall of Fame; like artists Tennessee Williams and Ernest Hemingway.","Leeper was born on April 4th, 1929 in Charlotte, North Carolina. She grew up in Charlotte where she graduated from high school with an honors degree in 1947. This led to her admittance to Duke University for a pre-med track - this is where Leeper acquired the nickname \"Doc\". After some push from mentor and professor Charles Sibley, Leeper switched her major to Art History, which she graduated with honors in 1951. Post-graduation, Leeper moved to Atlanta to work in screen printing and work on her art during off-time.","Leeper moved to Eldora, Florida in 1960 after visiting a few years prior and falling in love with naturalistic aesthetic of the area. Once in Eldora, Leeper really began her push for environmental change; starting with voting \"no\" for the addition of a paved road in Eldora. She continued to push for environmental action to happen along the coast - pushing for the creation of the Canaveral National Seashore. After a long fight, where President Richard Nixon refused to sign into law any more National Parks, President Gerald Ford signed the Canaveral National Seashore into law on January 1st, 1975.","Leeper then moved her focus on the idea of creating an Interdisciplinary Artist Residency. She created the Atlantic Center of the Arts in 1977 - where artists from all backgrounds came to mentor other artists. During the build, her focus on environmentalism was still front and center. Leeper told friend and architect Will Miller to cut down as few trees and to disrupt as little nature as possible. Miller did exactly that, creating a haven for artists to feel connected to nature and themselves. Leeper's art was one-of-a-kind, focusing on using spray paints instead of acrylic or oil, or the use of conventional brushes. Most of her art work is so unique it is not able to be restored due to the process of her art style. She, later in her career, migrated more towards sculptures, focusing on harsh-dramatic lines.","Leeper received an Honorary Doctorate in Humanities from Stetson University on May 11th, 1997. She also received an Honorary Doctorate in Fine Arts from her Alma Mater, Duke University, on May 18th, 1997. A few years later in 1999, Leeper was placed in the Florida Artists Hall of Fame - with artists like Ray Charles and Ernest Hemingway. In 1990, Leeper discovered a lump in her breast that quickly disappeared before obtaining a biopsy. In 1993, that lump returned, and it was confirmed to be cancerous. Leeper pushed on throughout the rest of her life, ensuring that she wouldn't let cancer bring her down. Leeper died just after her 71st birthday on April 11th, 2000.","Doris Leeper: A Retrospective, 1995","The First Decade: Atlantic Center for the Arts, 1987","The Second Decade: 1987-1997, [199?]","Doris Leeper Papers","Series I: Personal Files, 1990-2010, Undated, contains identification cards, business cards, awards, and correspondence.
