AAUW's mission stands for the advancement of equity of women and girls through advocacy, education, philanthropy, and research. They have been a part of the advancement of women through education for over sixty years. The Clearwater Branch of AAUW was first organized at 417 Jasmine Way as Patricia Goldschlag as their first president. Many of their members held public offices such as the School Board, the Clearwater City Commission, the Clearwater East Library, and the West Coast Regional Water Board. One of their members, Rita Garvey, even later became the Clearwater Mayor. During the 1950s, study groups were created within the organization and included controversial topics such as Florida Work Standards for Women and Children, Economic Opportunities in Florida, Segregation, and more. AAUW during the 1960s supported low-income housing and were against open space schools. They sought out policy changes for kindergarten to be placed in public schools. In the 1970s, they changed the roles of women in today's society and \"Mrs. John Doe becomes Jane Doe\". They began to invite men to join AAUW in the 1980s and held different study groups such as investment, computer literacy, and a writer's group. During the 1990s, they focused on education for children and organized scholarship funds. Throughout their time as an organization, they raised many funds for fellowships, an updated library system in Clearwater, and scholarships for young girls aspiring to be in a professional career. As of the 21st century, they have created the Food Bank and Haven House, focused on heart health, and have supported the memories of women during World War II. Their challenge today supports Breaking through Barriers, bullying in schools, and Title IX which protects a girl's right to play sports.","Democratic Women's Club of Florida, Inc. The contents of each series or subseries have been arranged alphabetically, then chronologically, unless otherwise noted.","Born in 1918, Charlotte Edwards Maguire was a pediatrician and early supporter of the FSU College of Medicine. After receiving her bachelor's degree from Memphis Teachers College in 1940 and her medical degree from The University of Arkansas in 1944, she opened her first pediatrics practice in Orlando, FL. She served as the director of the Orlando Child Health Clinic, chief of staff for the Central Florida Division of Children's Home Society Florida, and was the first woman president of the Florida Pediatric Society in 1952. Dr. Maguire was a pioneer for women in the medical industry, but was almost prevented from pursuing the field due to prejudice from the faculty at the University of Arkansas. Often singled out for being the only woman in her field (and was often referred to as \"Girl Doctor\" in newspapers), Dr. Maguire carved out a niche for herself and began to influence the medical industry in Florida.\n In 1942, Dr. Maguire gave birth to her daughter, Barbara Charlotte Champion (1942-2014), with her first husband, Jess Paul Champion (1914-1987). After divorcing Champion in 1947, she married attorney Raymer Maguire (1890-1960) in 1948. They later had a son, Thomas Clair Maguire II (1952-1996) in the early 1950s. Dr. Maguire continued to grow her practice throughout the 1950s and 1960s. In 1968, Dr. Maguire left her practice and accepted a position as the Assistant Secretary and Director of the Crippled Children's Commission of the newly created Department of Health and Rehabilitative Services. She later went on to work for the Department of Health Education and Welfare in Washington, D.C. and remained there until her retirement in 1994.\n In 1999, Dr. Maguire donated $1 million to create the Charlotte Edwards Maguire Endowed Scholarship Fund. Maguire's dedication to the FSU College of Medicine earned her the nickname \"Mother of the FSU Medical School.\" Dr. Maguire was also heavily involved in the development of the College of Medicine, advocating for the institution and mentoring students in the program. In 2002, Dr. Maguire was bestowed upon an Honorary Doctorate in Humane Letters by President Sandy D'Alemberte, \"making [her] Dr. Dr. Maguire,\" and had the distinct honor of having the FSU Medical Library named after in 2005.\n Dr. Maguire lived at Westminster Oaks in Tallahassee, FL, where she donated $1 million to create the Maguire Center for Lifelong Learning. In her leisure time, she pursued genealogy and painting. Dr. Maguire passed away in 2014.","The Charlotte Edwards Maguire Collection contains three VHS tapes that require the use of a VCR.","This collection documents the involvement of Charlotte Edwards Maguire (1918-2014) in the development of the Florida State University College of Medicine through meeting minutes, correspondence, program pamphlets and flyers, photographs and reports.
