In the 1990s, Brown created \"Florida's Lost Tourist Attractions,\" or Lostparks.com, a website dedicated to documenting the many attractions that sprang up and later fell by the wayside following the opening of Walt Disney World. Of his work on the website, Brown writes, \"Tourist attractions have a way of springing up on the Florida roadside... only to wither and die when they just can't quite sustain the magic. You will find no historical marker to mark their passing, no footnote in the history book, only the occasional exotic plant, or shopping center, or oddly named road.\" His research for the website led him to collect thousands of brochures, postcards, flyers, and other ephemera detailing Florida tourism. ","In 1997, Brown created a travel website for The Mining Company (later known as About.com or Dotdash), a digital media company, writing about theme parks around the world and the amusement park industry. Today, the organization supports almost forty clubs throughout Florida and has been affiliated with the National Federation of Democratic Women (NFDW) since 1980. With no interest from the state in preserving the area, Audubon Florida founded the sanctuary in the mid-1950s. From an initial 5,000 acres, it was expanded to more than 13,000 acres. As part of the Corkscrew watershed, the sanctuary is part of the western Everglades. To save the remaining cypress and vital habitat from destruction, Audubon led an effort to raise money to buy the property. By 1954, 5,680 acres were accumulated, the last virgin cypress forest in the entire world and the most important Wood Stork rookery in the U.S. When offered the property, the state of Florida expressed no interest in the site, so Audubon took ownership. An Ybor City native, Rex Maniscalco was around to experience and participate in the emergence of a visible LGBT community in the Tampa area. From the early Pride picnics and festivals to the beginnings of Equality Florida, Rex was there, camera in hand, to document the people who have been instrumental in creating LGBT community and culture. Inspired by a traveling exhibition of the history of the LGBT movement, Rex undertook the task of capturing gay history in the making through his camera and video recordings. Moved by the stories of hidden lives told by Bobbie Smith and Kay Thompson, he began the Rainbow in Sunshine Project in January of 2007 to offer a photographic history of gay lives and activism in Tampa, Florida.
