While his Father was in the navy, George's family lived at Pearl Harbor, and he witnessed the 1941 attack. George himself served in the navy for more than three years as a weather forecaster; for part of the time he was on the USS Bairoko. After graduating from the University of California, Los Angeles with a degree in meteorology in 1955, George Millay worked for a stockbroking firm until 1960. He planned to create a submarine bar there so that customers could view sea creatures while enjoying cocktails. The plan failed because the water in the harbor was too cloudy. However, his interest in marine life introduced him to Dr. Kenneth Norris, curator at Marineland. He pulled together ideas from a water playground at the Toronto World's Fair, a flume near Sacramento and a wave pool in Alabama, added a children's playgound, restrooms, gift shop and snack bar to create a new concept. He formed the Leisure Marine Corporation to develop his idea. Initially, the company ran the Seven Seas park in Arlington, TX, for a season, but the venture did not develop further. Wet 'n Wild eventually became a reality in Orlando, where it opened in 1977. Miscellaneous, 1987-2004","The Center is an Orlando-based LGBT+ organization that offers support and orchestrates events to improve the lives of the local LGBT+ community. ",""[The Center's] history begins on November 27, 1978, when the non-profit organization Gay Community Services (GCS) for safe space meetups was created. Later that year, Gay Men's Hotline was formed. The number was 407-THE-GAYS and was staffed by volunteers. Gay men could call for referrals, mental health counseling, and up-to-date information on GCS meetups. In 1980, women joined GCS, and the organization was renamed Gay & Lesbian Community Services (GLCS). In 1984, the focus of GLCS and the Gay Men's Hotline shifted to health and HIV/AIDS care. Our services to the community keep expanding. The organization moved to 1036 N. Mills Avenue in 1987. By 1990, GLCS reincorporated as the Gay, Lesbian & Bisexual Community Center of Central Florida (GLBCC-The Center), so the organization continues to grow, both in terms of human platform and infrastructure. In 1999, The Center purchased 942 and 946 N. Mills Avenue. In 2007, the organization changed its name to the Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual & Transgender Community Center of Central Florida, Inc. (GLBTCC). In 2014, the organization ventured to offer services with mobile units. In 2016, The Pulse Tragedy occurred in Orlando. President Obama called the Center "Ground Zero for community healing." Eleven years later, after its latest name change, in 2018, the organization changed its name to LGBT+ Center Orlando, Inc. (The Center Orlando) and opened The Center Kissimmee. Subsequently, in 2020, the Center partnered with AHF to provide testing at Out of the Closet (AHF). By 2021, the Center had been chosen to oversee Orlando United Assistance Center (now OURS), expand health services, and open its second downtown location on Hillcrest Street." ","Source: "About Us." The Center Orlando. Spencer was born in Orlando and grew up in Winter Garden, Florida. He worked at Sand Hill Nursery near Lake Avalon and the Land of Bromeliads in Gotha before finding employment with Julian Nally. After the Nally estate was sold, Spencer worked for Racine Foster at Bromel-La. He graduated from UCF in 1990 summa cum laude with a BA in Liberal Studies and then found employment with Lyman B. Smith at the Smithsonian Museum of Natural History. Michael Spencer named a genus of bromeliads "Racinaea" in honor of Racine Foster. While engaged in his research, Spencer amassed this collection of materials concerning bromeliads and their collectors. He now lives in Frederick, Maryland where he has served on the Historic Preservation Commission since 2004.","Materials were rehoused in pH neutral folders and cartons. Photographs, negatives and slides were enclosed in polyester sleeves. Many of the materials were well organized and the arrangement was retained. The remainder were arranged by following the original arrangement as far as possible. Notes on folders were retained in the new folder. Paper clips were replaced with plastic clips or materials that belonged together were held together in a pH neutral paper sleeve. Loose-leaf notebooks that were badly rusted were discarded and the contents placed in folders. Items loose in the back of notebooks were foldered separately and marked accordingly. Notes from a film canister were written exactly as found as the label could not be removed. Albums falling apart were taken apart and foldered. Albums in reasonable condition had the photographs attached properly with corners and the pages interleaved to prevent sticking. Loose album pages in the Foster subseries on Plant Information were merely foldered as they were not in an album and were found without context. Correspondence, publications, notebooks, drawings, research materials, memorabilia and photographs show all aspects of their work including plant collecting, landscape designing and publishing. Many of the materials in this series originally came from Mulford and Racine Foster, which means that there is some overlap with the previous series. Spencer's own collecting interest lay in documenting the importance of bromeliads in society, and he collected many common items that showed bromeliads, especially pineapples.","
Series III: Author Files, 1754-1997 includes a variety of media used for research, such as articles, books, magazines, newspaper clippings, and photographs.
