They found that insurance for waterslides was overpriced but realized that if a group of waterparks bought insurance together, the cost would fall. In 1980 they founded the American Waterslide Association to reduce the price of insurance for members. In 1981, Turner published a newsletter, News Splash and held the association's first convention. The organization developed rapidly, in 1983 it became the World Waterpark Association. It is a non-profit organization that is now the world's leading water leisure trade association representing 1300 parks and supplier members from 52 countries.","Al Turner continued publishing the organization's magazines including Resort Attractions, Waterpark Developers Reference, World and Waterpark Buyer's Guide. Grannan first served in the United States Navy before pursuing a degree at the University of South Florida. While studying, Grannan was a founding member and officer of the USF Gay Coalition and was an activist for LGBTQ+ rights at the local and national level. Grannan became a Licensed Mental Health Counselor and served the State of Florida for 27 years. His work was affiliated with the Florida Mental Health Institute at the University of South Florida. Much of Grannan's work occurred during the AIDS crisis and he was a founding member of the Tampa AIDS Network (TAN), which provided support services and advocacy for individuals living with HIV/AIDS. Grannan ran for Tampa City Council in 1983, though he did not win the race. ","Grannan retired to Citrus County. While living there, he served as President of the Citrus County Historical Society and was an active volunteer in the community. The first series includes documents from work conducted at the sanctuary proper, though additional related documents may be found in the subject files. Within series, folders are arranged alphabetically.","Audubon Florida's Corkscrew Swamp Sanctuary is a site which had been protected by Audubon wardens since the 1910s.  With no interest from the state in preserving the area, Audubon Florida founded the sanctuary in the mid-1950s.  From an initial 5,000 acres, it was expanded to more than 13,000 acres.  It is especially notable for its bald cypress forest and cypress domes, the only part of the original Fakahatchee cypress strand in the area to be preserved from logging, which commenced in 1944. As part of the Corkscrew watershed, the sanctuary is part of the western Everglades. To save the remaining cypress and vital habitat from destruction, Audubon led an effort to raise money to buy the property. By 1954, 5,680 acres were accumulated, the last virgin cypress forest in the entire world and the most important Wood Stork rookery in the U.S. When offered the property, the state of Florida expressed no interest in the site, so Audubon took ownership. By the 1970s and 80s, development had altered the local landscape and made the sanctuary a much less isolated site. Under the leadership of Executive Director (and longtime Audubon employee) Ed Carlson in the 1980s and 90s, the sanctuary incoroporated more formal education programs, a visitor center, and a boardwalk that provides a scenic tour of parts of the property.
