She graduated from Dillard High School at just 14 years old and, at 15, entered Fisk University on a Ford Foundation scholarship to study English. Her intellectual journey deepened at Oberlin College, where exposure to courses on the African diaspora inspired her to change her major to Sociology-Anthropology, earning her bachelor's degree in 1957.","Gloria enrolled at Columbia University in New York, where she pursued graduate studies in Anthropology. She earned both her Master's (1959) and Ph.D. degrees in (1964), becoming the first African American woman to teach at Columbia University. Grannan first served in the United States Navy before pursuing a degree at the University of South Florida. While studying, Grannan was a founding member and officer of the USF Gay Coalition and was an activist for LGBTQ+ rights at the local and national level. Grannan became a Licensed Mental Health Counselor and served the State of Florida for 27 years. His work was affiliated with the Florida Mental Health Institute at the University of South Florida. Much of Grannan's work occurred during the AIDS crisis and he was a founding member of the Tampa AIDS Network (TAN), which provided support services and advocacy for individuals living with HIV/AIDS. Grannan ran for Tampa City Council in 1983, though he did not win the race. ","Grannan retired to Citrus County.
