Fowler is the author of 8 books: How Clarissa Burden Learned How to Fly; Sugar Cage; River of Hidden Dreams; The problem with Murmur Lee; Remembering Blue; Before Women Had Wings; A Million Fragile Bones; and, When Katie Wakes. Her work has been translated in 18 languages and is published worldwide. Fowler explores in her novels Southern themes such as interracial connections and relationships between black and white women with a Floridian background. Fowler's inspiration in her novels is based on her family life and experience lived in Central Florida. ","She is the recipient of the Chatauqua South Library Award, the 1996 Southern Book Critics Circle Award, and the Francis Buck Award from the League of American Pen Women. Three of her novels have been Dublin International Literary Award nominees. She also directs the the Vermont College of Fine Arts Novel retreat held each May in Montpellier, Vermont. For ten years, she directed various writing conferences in Florida, including the St-Augustine Writers Conference. From 1997-2003 she directed the Connie May Fowler Women Wings Foundation, an organization that served at risk women and children. The project, which included a study of Central Avenue, Tampa's historic, African American business district, led to a number of public events and activities beginning in October 1994. The project was funded by the Florida Humanities Council, with additional support provided by the Tampa Bay History Center. USF Professors Susan Greenbaum, Ph.D. and Cheryl Rodriguez, Ph.D. contributed significantly to the project, along with former USF Anthropology student Geoffrey Mohlman, independent researcher Beverly Ward, and Ginger Barber.
