While growing up, Tony absorbed the multiethnic cultural ambience of Ybor City and its primarily Cuban, Spanish, and Italian population. A graduate of Hillsborough High School, he attended the University of Florida for two years, then transferred to Stetson University to study law. After two years, he left Stetson to embark on a business career. Following service in the U.S. Army during World War II, Pizzo started his own company, International Brands, a wine and beer distributorship. He subsequently accepted a position with Tampa Wholesale Liquors, which later became Midulla Importing Company and House of Midulla, Inc. From 1950 to his retirement in 1984 Tony Pizzo was the company's vice president in charge of sales, also serving as president of Midulla affiliates Rey del Mundo Cigar Company (1965-1971) and Fruit Wines of Florida (1972-1984). ","Pizzo was active in local business, civic, educational, and cultural organizations, including the Tampa General Hospital Foundation, Barrio Latino Commission, University of Tampa Foundation, University of South Florida President's Council, Ybor City Redevelopment Committee, Tampa Philharmonic Association, and Tampa Bay Business Hall of Fame. He was the founder and first president of the Tampa International Trade Council, first president of the Ybor City Junior Chamber of Commerce, first president of the Rotary Club of Ybor City, and the first honorary mayor (alcalde) of Ybor City. In 1952, the Cuban government awarded Tony Pizzo the Order of Carlos Manuel de Céspedes, and in 1976 the government of Italy invested him as a Knight Officer of the Order of Merit. A 1993 Tampa Tribune article commented that no other Tampan had been awarded so many honors for contributions and service to his community.","During the early 1950s, Tony Pizzo realized that the colorful, multiethnic Ybor City of his youth was rapidly fading away due to post-World War II demographic and economic changes. He decided to make it his mission to preserve the history of Tampa's immigrant cigar makers and the community they built. Over time, this mission expanded to include the history of the Tampa and Hillsborough County as a whole. Pursuing his avocation for local history, Pizzo became the most prominent advocate of and spokesman for Tampa's historic heritage, earning the informal title \"Mr. Ybor City.\"","A prolific writer whose history articles appeared in a range of publications- from Tampa Bay History magazine to the popular press- his first book-length work, Tampa Town, 1886-1834: Cracker Village with a Latin Accent, appeared in 1968. In 1979, Pizzo collaborated with WUSF Television in creating Tony Pizzo's Tampa, a ten-part documentary that won two awards from the National University Television Association. In 1983, he co-authored a comprehensive history of Tampa and its vicinity, Tampa, the Treasure City , with USF history professor Gary R. Mormino.","In 1971, Pizzo founded the Tampa Historical Society and served as its first president. He was chairman of the Hillsborough County Historical Commission from 1968 to 1980, and from 1984 until his death was Hillsborough County's official historian. As a Tampa native, civic leader, and prominent spokesman for local history, Pizzo was ideally positioned to gather historically significant material. He \"knew everyone\" and \"everyone\" knew him. His decades of gathering information about Tampa's past resulted in a monumental collection of historical materials documenting virtually every aspect of the community's historical heritage from its origins as a frontier fort to the dynamic, modern metropolis of today. In a letter dated August 11, 1980, Tony Pizzo expressed his intention that the Special Collections Department at the University of South Florida's Tampa Library be the permanent repository for his unique collection.","This intention was realized on October 23, 1982 when USF President John Lott Brown formally accepted the Pizzo Collection during a gala dinner program held at the Hyatt Regency Hotel in downtown Tampa. Spencer was born in Orlando and grew up in Winter Garden, Florida. He worked at Sand Hill Nursery near Lake Avalon and the Land of Bromeliads in Gotha before finding employment with Julian Nally. After the Nally estate was sold, Spencer worked for Racine Foster at Bromel-La. He graduated from UCF in 1990 summa cum laude with a BA in Liberal Studies and then found employment with Lyman B. Smith at the Smithsonian Museum of Natural History. Michael Spencer named a genus of bromeliads \"Racinaea\" in honor of Racine Foster. While engaged in his research, Spencer amassed this collection of materials concerning bromeliads and their collectors. He now lives in Frederick, Maryland where he has served on the Historic Preservation Commission since 2004.","Materials were rehoused in pH neutral folders and cartons. Photographs, negatives and slides were enclosed in polyester sleeves. Many of the materials were well organized and the arrangement was retained. The remainder were arranged by following the original arrangement as far as possible. Notes on folders were retained in the new folder. Paper clips were replaced with plastic clips or materials that belonged together were held together in a pH neutral paper sleeve. Loose-leaf notebooks that were badly rusted were discarded and the contents placed in folders. Items loose in the back of notebooks were foldered separately and marked accordingly. Notes from a film canister were written exactly as found as the label could not be removed. Albums falling apart were taken apart and foldered. Albums in reasonable condition had the photographs attached properly with corners and the pages interleaved to prevent sticking. Loose album pages in the Foster subseries on Plant Information were merely foldered as they were not in an album and were found without context. Activism, 1981-2001 II. Photographs, 1979-1998 III.Artifacts, 2003-2008","Saviz Shafaie was born on August 30, 1950, into a political family. Shafaie grew up learning poetry and literature not just through books but through anecdotes heard from numerous \"uncles\" and \"aunts,\" as it was customary to call his parents' close family friends and contemporaries. This mix of politics, social activism, and art shaped his life. ","After finishing elementary and secondary school in Tehran, Shafaie enrolled in Shiraz University (formerly Pahlavi) to study National Development and Sociology. In 1972, he delivered a speech to present the results of a questionnaire and research he had done to study attitudes towards sexual orientation in Iran. The speech was socially important, as it marked the first serious discussion in Iran of same-sex relationships.","After graduating from Shiraz University, Shafaie moved to the United States in 1976 to continue his education. He enrolled at Syracuse University in the Master's Program in Sociology. During his time at Syracuse, Shafaie got involved in Iranian student groups and explored gay and lesbian issues to expand his own understanding. ","Shafaie was involved in the anti-Shah movement in the United States during and after the gathering movement against the Shah in 1977. Although he was opposed to Iran's U.S.-backed monarchy, Shafaie was not in favor of an Islamic regime either. He was involved in organizing civil, intellectual, and political rights campaigns both before and after the 1979 Iranian revolution. Shafaie also spoke out against oppression and repression that occurred after the consolidation of power by the Islamic regime. ","Shafaie always remained a staunch opponent of U.S. intervention and policies, which opened other paths for Shafaie as he came in contact with activists surrounding the issues of Latin America. Shafaie became involved with activists who stood in solidarity with the Nicaraguan revolution, the movement in El Salvador, and those fighting against the U.S.-backed military junta in Chile. He became an active member of the Syracuse Peace Council and remained involved until his move to Orlando, Florida, in 1983. ","In Orlando, Shafaie quickly became involved with various movements. He became a founding member of the Florida Nuclear Freeze group and a member of the Florida Coalition for Peace and Justice. Shafaie also became instrumental in organizing anti-war activities, and a proponent of social justice causes in the city. Shafaie continued to be involved in organizing against the first U.S. war against Iraq in 1990 and also remained an opponent of U.S. aggressive and interventionist policies in the Middle East and elsewhere. ","Amidst other activism, Shafaie spent the majority of his time in Orlando fighting homophobia and sexism as well as promoting civil and equal rights for gays and lesbians. He was involved in gay and lesbian activism locally. He also became centrally involved in the Iranian organization HOMAN, an international coalition of Iranian gay and lesbian organizations. Shafaie was both a contributor and one of the forces behind the production and publication of HOMAN's magazine. ","Additionally, Shafaie raised the issue of also homophobia in papers presented at an Iranian Women's Studies conference and at several gatherings in Canada. Saviz Shafaie passed away from cancer on September 18th, 2000. ","The materials in this collection primarily relate to Shafaie's LGBT+ activism in Orlando, though there are mentions of Iranian activism as well.","Collection processed by and finding aid prepared by Kyle Messamore in 2013.
