She attended college at the University of Florida where she received several degrees, including the Master's and Doctorate of Philosophy degrees. She was a professor of Rhetoric and Public Address at University of Florida and Florida State College at Jacksonville, where she was elected Professor Emeritus following her retirement in December 2007. ","\nDr. Saffy was a founder of the National Organization for Women chapters in Jacksonville and Gainesville, as well as founder of the Jacksonville Women's Network. She was named \"A Woman of Courage and Vision\" by the Mayor's Commission on the Status of Women and the recipient of a Lifetime EVE Award by the Florida Times Union.\n    \n    As a humanitarian and activist, she served on numerous local, state, and national committees, including the John F. Kennedy Center Committee for the Performing Arts during the Clinton Administration, the Advisory Committee on LaVilla Cultural Heritage District, American Arab Institute, Duval County Democratic Executive Committee, and the Jacksonville Human Rights Commission. \n    \n    Dr. Saffy was also politically active. She led a 1975 march in Tallahassee in support of the Equal Rights Amendment. She served as a Florida delegate to the International Women's Conference and as a Florida State delegate in six Democratic National Conventions. She was also the president of the Florida Women's Political Caucus. Peter's childhood was greatly influenced by the outdoors, and his family ties to St. Petersburg led him to dedicate his life and career to environmental activism in Florida. He attended Florida Presbyterian College (and graduated from the newly renamed Eckerd College) with a bachelor's degree in political science and attended Stetson Law and Florida State University College of Law. Peter completed an internship with the Public Defender's office in Bradenton, FL, leading to a permanent position as a trial lawyer for the Manatee County Public Defender's Office. Throughout his time as a trial lawyer, Peter remained involved in environmental and historic preservation efforts locally and in Florida. Durland was born in Norfolk, Nebraska on October 17, 1922. He attended the University of Nebraska before enlisting in 1943. He was selected for the Army Specialized Training Program, as well as the Officer Candidate School at Fort Benning, Georgia. After he completed basic training in June of 1944 at Camp Roberts, California, he was assigned to the 70th Infantry Division out of Camp Adair, Oregon. The division was sent overseas aboard the \u003cemph render=\"italic\"\u003eIle de France \u003c/emph\u003eto France, where he fought from October 1944- February 1945.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003c/p\u003e\n","\u003cp\u003eHis unit fought mostly along the Siegfried line and in one day forced the Germans to retreat and captured sixty German soldiers. He and his unit were awarded the Silver Star for their actions. In early 1945 he was called back to his division's headquarters to work as an assistant to Major General Leroy Watson who was the Commanding General to the 70th infantry. Durland was given office work as well as other tasks to help the Major General. He worked in Czechoslovakia and during the Nuremberg Trials in Germany. He was able to witness the trials but returned to the United States before they ended.
