With no interest from the state in preserving the area, Audubon Florida founded the sanctuary in the mid-1950s. From an initial 5,000 acres, it was expanded to more than 13,000 acres. It is especially notable for its bald cypress forest and cypress domes, the only part of the original Fakahatchee cypress strand in the area to be preserved from logging, which commenced in 1944. As part of the Corkscrew watershed, the sanctuary is part of the western Everglades. To save the remaining cypress and vital habitat from destruction, Audubon led an effort to raise money to buy the property. By 1954, 5,680 acres were accumulated, the last virgin cypress forest in the entire world and the most important Wood Stork rookery in the U.S. When offered the property, the state of Florida expressed no interest in the site, so Audubon took ownership. By the 1970s and 80s, development had altered the local landscape and made the sanctuary a much less isolated site. Under the leadership of Executive Director (and longtime Audubon employee) Ed Carlson in the 1980s and 90s, the sanctuary incoroporated more formal education programs, a visitor center, and a boardwalk that provides a scenic tour of parts of the property. While his Father was in the navy, George's family lived at Pearl Harbor, and he witnessed the 1941 attack. George himself served in the navy for more than three years as a weather forecaster; for part of the time he was on the USS Bairoko. After graduating from the University of California, Los Angeles with a degree in meteorology in 1955, George Millay worked for a stockbroking firm until 1960. He married Anne Real in 1963; they eventually had three sons and a daughter.","\nIn 1958, Millay opened the Reef restaurant in Los Angeles with David Tallichet. He planned to create a submarine bar there so that customers could view sea creatures while enjoying cocktails. The plan failed because the water in the harbor was too cloudy. However, his interest in marine life introduced him to Dr. Kenneth Norris, curator at Marineland. Together with Milton Shedd and David DeMott, they organized the Marine Park Corporation to create a marine park in San Diego. Sea World opened in 1964 and expanded in 1970 with a park in Ohio followed by the Orlando park in 1972. Sea World Inc. opened an amusement park in Valencia California on 29th May 1971 in partnership with Newhall Land and Farming. Officially named \"Magic Mountain\", the park was designated \"Tragic Mountain\" by a reporter who was injured there. Sea World did not make a profit on the venture and sold out to its partner late in 1971. Millay resigned from Sea World Inc in 1974 because of a disagreement with his partners over how the company should develop.","\nGeorge Millay had spent a lot of time at Sea World in Orlando, and he thought that families would enjoy water activities as a break from the Florida heat. He pulled together ideas from a water playground at the Toronto World's Fair, a flume near Sacramento and a wave pool in Alabama, added a children's playgound, restrooms, gift shop and snack bar to create a new concept. He formed the Leisure Marine Corporation to develop his idea. Initially, the company ran the Seven Seas park in Arlington, TX, for a season, but the venture did not develop further. Wet 'n Wild eventually became a reality in Orlando, where it opened in 1977. The company took over the failing Seven Seas park and redeveloped it into the second Wet 'n Wild in 1983 followed by Las Vegas in 1985. Additional sites opened in Garland, TX, Brazil and Mexico. Wet 'n Wild was named the Best of Aquatics for 2003 by Aquatics International magazine.","\nMillay retired from Wet 'n Wild in 1998, but he continued to work on new projects. He designed and patented a system for moving visitors down into the center of a circular aquarium so that everyone had a good view of the fish. Millay partnered with William Watts and David Powell in creating a company named Sea Venture to sell the system. At the time of his death in 2006, no examples of the system had been sold.","\nGeorge Millay received Lifetime Achievement Awards from the International Association of Amusement Parks and Attractions and the Themed Entertainment Association, and he was named the Father of the Waterpark Industry by the World Waterpark Association. Please contact lib-special@unf.edu to schedule an appointment.","Grace Brooks Solomon, the youngest child of Sallie Adams and Henry Pickens Brooks, was born in 1915 in Jacksonville, Florida. Her formative years transpired within the confines of this city, where she commenced her educational journey at Edward Waters College. As her pursuit of knowledge unfolded, Solomon extended her academic endeavors to Bethune-Cookman College and the Tuskegee Institute, culminating in the attainment of a Bachelor of Science in Education. Subsequently, she further honed her intellectual skills at Atlanta University, obtaining a degree in Library Science. A career in education ensued, with Solomon notably assuming the role of librarian at Rufus E. Payne Elementary School.","Concurrently, her husband, James H. Solomon, imparted his knowledge as an instructor of upholstery at New Stanton Senior High School. A testament to their shared endeavors, James H. Solomon constructed the familial residence that would house many generations to come. Solomon's extended family, inclusive of the McGraths, converges in Alexandria, Virginia, contributing to the broader context of Grace Brooks Solomon's heritage.","Of equal prominence within the family lineage is Sallye B. Mathis, Grace's older sister. A trailblazing figure in the city's history, Mathis was one of Jacksonville's first Black women to serve on the city council. In parallel with her sister, Mathis dedicated a significant portion of her life to the field of education. In 1977, she founded the Minority Women's Coalition (MWC), an organization subsequently presided over by Grace Solomon in 1987 following her sister's passing in 1982. Grace, prior to assuming the presidency, served as the Residential Agent for the MWC.","The articulated objectives of the MWC, as described in its bylaws, underscores its commitment to fostering the holistic development of women, both educationally and professionally, while also encouraging civic engagement. Central to the MWC's mission is the enhancement of educational opportunities through an annual scholarship awards program and the provision of emergency assistance to vulnerable families facing existential threats. ","During her tenure as president in the late 1980s and 1990s, Grace Solomon directed her efforts towards improving racial disparities within the Jacksonville education system. Simultaneously, she emerged as a prominent figure in commemorating the legacy of Sallye B. Mathis, through her leadership in advocating for the renaming of an elementary school in her sister's honor. Grace Brooks Solomon passed at the age of 95 on September 11th, 2010. Her life stands as a testament to a legacy marked by an unwavering commitment to education, civic duty, and the advancement of minority women.","See also: Sallye Brooks Mathis Papers, Thomas G. Carpenter Library, University of North Florida, Jacksonville, Florida.","This collection is home to the personal papers of Grace Brooks Solomon, a political activist in Jacksonville, Florida, most notably known for her work during her presidency of the Minority Women's Coalition. These papers provide insight into the professional career and personal life of Grace Brooks Solomon as well as her efforts to memorialize her sister, former Jacksonville City Council Member, Sallye Brooks Mathis.
