","World War, 1939-1945","Nautical training-schools","Clippings (Books, newspapers, etc.)","Photography","In November 1939, two training ships entered Tampa Bay and moored at the U.S. Coast Guard base along Bayboro Harbor. This event marked the beginning of the United States Maritime Service Training Station (USMSTS) in St. Petersburg, Florida. From late 1939 until 1941, the Maritime Service ships resided at the Coast Guard base while construction of the training station took place. Dedicated in July 1941, the USMSTS became an active training center during the war years. Until decommissioned in early 1950, this site served as one of the largest training facilities for the Merchant Marine along the southern coast of the United States. Thousands of Maritime Service graduates who had trained on ships such as the Joseph Conrad, Tusitala, Vigil, American Seaman, and American Sailor later carried supplies to armed forces during the Second World War and played other essential roles in supporting convoys and protecting shipments.","Mariners had served with honor since the earliest days of the United States, with privateers and merchant marines assisting the Continental Navy during the American Revolution. During times of war and peace, these sailors transported cargo, guarded shipments, and assisted members of\nthe Armed Forces with logistical operations. The United States Congress authorized the creation of a United States Maritime Service through the Merchant Marine Act of 1936. Two years later, President Franklin D. Roosevelt established the U.S. Maritime Service (USMS) in an effort to\nprepare for possible wartime hostilities.","Approximately 25,000 young adults trained at the Bayboro Harbor facility between early 1940 and 31 March 1950. Many young men between the ages of 17½ and 35 arrived during America's involvement in the Second World War. Along with waves of over 120,000 U.S. Army Air Corps recruits and other service personnel, the USMS trainees stayed at hotels such as the Soreno and Vinoy, as well as in the barracks that later became part of USF St. Petersburg ('B' building) until demolished in March 1992. Cadets faced a rigorous five-week preliminary training session to test their aptitude in seamanship and boat operations. USMS trainees took classes at the station\n(including swimming and endurance tests in the pool), in outdoor facilities near the present-day site of the Bayfront Center, and on the ships docked along the harbor. After the initial training session, the merchant mariners continued their studies in areas such as practical ship training (on the deck, in the engine room, as a steward, etc.) and advanced navigational techniques. A Cooks and Bakers School also began in December 1942.","Donald Saxer, a cadet who trained at the facility in 1943 and later joined the staff, collected many of the items in the Saxer/USMSTS, Bayboro Harbor, Collection. Rising to the rank of Chief Petty Officer, Saxer became an important leader at Bayboro Harbor. Ellingwood began his military service in 1936 and underwent recruit training in Connecticut and Rhode Island throughout the year. Throughout 1937, Ellingwood served as a Seaman Second Class on the USS  :Cummings  and after 1938, Ellingwood performed disbursing work on the USS  Tucker  as a storekeeper. In 1940, Ellingwood was transferred as a storekeeper to the USS  Shaw  shortly before it was bombed by the Japanese at Pearl Harbor. According to Ellingwood: \"I heard someone shout, \"We're being attacked.\" We all ran to our battle stations. Mine was on the bridge.\" On top of the Shaw, he viewed the Japanese attacking Battleship Row, where he stated that \"one of the most sickening things I watched was the USS  Oklahoma  capsize. To see this big ship roll over and see it go belly up, knowing hundreds of soldiers could be trapped inside, made me feel ill… made me feel useless.\" While Ellingwood ended up in the water after two bombs had struck the Shaw, he spent hours after the attack helping wounded soldiers swim to shore and removing the bodies of his former shipmates.\n \nAfter surviving the attack on the USS  Shaw , Ellingwood served as the Acting Pay Clerk on the USS  Dixie and the USS Fomalhaut  until he attended flight training from 1942 to 1945. Please contact lib-specialcollections@fsu.edu with requests for access or for more information.","Alexander Herman Schmidt was born on August 5, 1921, in Worcester, Massachusetts. He enlisted in the United States Navy in September 1942. He attended training in Rhode Island and Jacksonville, Florida until he went aboard the U.S.S. Natoma Bay in June 1943. He served aboard the U.S.S. Natoma Bay (CVE-62) , Composite Squadrom 63 (VC-63) until his discharge in December 1945. Initially, he was a gunner on a Grumman Avenger until he was grounded due to an ear infection. After that he serviced aircraft aboard the Natoma Bay. While aboard the Natoma Bay, Schmidt saw much combat in the Pacific, namely in the Philippines, Papua New Guinea, and other major Pacific Island battles such as Okinawa and Iwo Jima. Along with Pacific battles, his ship also survived a Kamikaze attack. He also wrote a memoir titled  Between Here and There  that details his life experiences. Schmidt passed in 2010.","This collection was donated by Jon Schmidt. Natoma Bay (CVE 62), Composite Squadron 63 (VC-63). The collection includes sets of uniforms, a bomber jacket, personal papers, medals, awards, and a plaque. His personal papers include personnel documents, two journals, captured Japanese papers, the  Bluejacket Manua l, Natoma Bay records, and various publications from and about the Natoma Bay Association. The papers primarily document his time spent in the Pacific Campaign, although his records also date his trainings in Rhode Island and Jacksonville, Florida. This sailor also has a memoir titled  Between Here and There  that details his life and military experiences.
