The DWCF started as a small organization with a handful of members, but experienced large growth in the 1970s and 1980s. In 1972, the DWCF received its charter, qualifying it as a corporation. Today, the organization supports almost forty clubs throughout Florida and has been affiliated with the National Federation of Democratic Women (NFDW) since 1980. Florida is recognized as a Full Member State under the NFDW because it has a statewide Democratic Women's club organization; however, the NFDW does not directly influence the DWCF in its operations.","
The DWCF has a Board of Directors consisting of a president, secretary, treasurer, and supporting officers overseeing nine regions. Miscellaneous, 1987-2004","The Center is an Orlando-based LGBT+ organization that offers support and orchestrates events to improve the lives of the local LGBT+ community. ",""[The Center's] history begins on November 27, 1978, when the non-profit organization Gay Community Services (GCS) for safe space meetups was created. Later that year, Gay Men's Hotline was formed. The number was 407-THE-GAYS and was staffed by volunteers. Gay men could call for referrals, mental health counseling, and up-to-date information on GCS meetups. In 1980, women joined GCS, and the organization was renamed Gay & Lesbian Community Services (GLCS). In 1984, the focus of GLCS and the Gay Men's Hotline shifted to health and HIV/AIDS care. Our services to the community keep expanding. The organization moved to 1036 N. Mills Avenue in 1987. By 1990, GLCS reincorporated as the Gay, Lesbian & Bisexual Community Center of Central Florida (GLBCC-The Center), so the organization continues to grow, both in terms of human platform and infrastructure. In 1999, The Center purchased 942 and 946 N. Mills Avenue. In 2007, the organization changed its name to the Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual & Transgender Community Center of Central Florida, Inc. (GLBTCC). In 2014, the organization ventured to offer services with mobile units. In 2016, The Pulse Tragedy occurred in Orlando. President Obama called the Center "Ground Zero for community healing." Eleven years later, after its latest name change, in 2018, the organization changed its name to LGBT+ Center Orlando, Inc. (The Center Orlando) and opened The Center Kissimmee. Subsequently, in 2020, the Center partnered with AHF to provide testing at Out of the Closet (AHF). By 2021, the Center had been chosen to oversee Orlando United Assistance Center (now OURS), expand health services, and open its second downtown location on Hillcrest Street." ","Source: "About Us." The Center Orlando. Please contact lib-special@unf.edu to schedule an appointment","The Southeastern Fisheries Association (SFA) was founded in 1952 and is based in Tallahassee, Florida. Since its inception, SFA has been dedicated to supporting the interests of the commercial fishing industry in the southeastern United States, with a focus on Florida. Through advocacy and collaboration, the association works to address key issues affecting fisheries management and promote sustainable practices within the industry.

SFA played a large role in the historic 1994 Florida case that approved Amendment 3, also known as the Net Ban. This ban limited the use of entangling nets in Florida waters and had a significant impact on commercial fishermen and consumers of seafood. Members of SFA challenged the amendment through the legal system to try and prevent the implementation of such a ban, but on July 1st, 1995, the use of gill and trammel nets in Florida waters were ultimately outlawed. For years to come, members of SFA would continue to fight the net ban in Florida and to try and prevent similar outcomes in the rest of the southeast. Documents in this collection show their efforts. ","In addition to their other lobbying work, the SFA focused on the Magnuson-Stevens Act, also referred to as the Magnuson Act. The act was a precursor to the Net Ban and affected the fishing community for decades. Originally passed in 1976, its primary objective was to prevent overfishing. Federally declared a "fishing disaster" for the harm it caused to the fishing industry in the Northeast United States, many commercial fishermen, like most members of the SFA, strongly opposed this act for its lack of protection, transparency, and it's extremely stringent rules, as reflected throughout this collection. ","SFA was involved in many outreach programs throughout the southeast region that involved activities like education, trade, conservation, and various other efforts. Robert P. Jones, donor of this collection, served as president of SFA from 1964 to 2018. Throughout his 54 years of leadership, Jones' engagement with seafood industry stakeholders has been foundational to the organization's influence on both the commercial fishing culture and seafood production in the United States.
