The reason for a state organization was to seek official recognition and high-school credit for adequate private instruction.","\nThe idea for establishing the FMTA was kept alive for over a decade yet nothing was done to progress it until after about fourteen years. In 1932, the idea for the state organization was revived by the president of the Jacksonville Music Teacher Association, Mrs. Lloyd Jones, she appointed a committee to study the most advisable way to accomplish the idea and form the State Music Teacher Association.","\nAfter a failed attempt in 1933, finally on March of 1934 there was an organizational meeting that was held in Jacksonville, the association had finally been found with over one-hundred members. FTMA was then later affiliated with Music Teacher Association in 1953.","\nFour years later in 1938, the association gained the recognition that they sought out for; High School Credit, it was announced with a statement as followed \"Credit may now be offered for adequate private instruction\" on the Florida school bulletin. They did not have a set plan on how exactly the teacher would be certified to their competence, it was until 1954 that they had a Model Plan.","\nA meeting on September of 1955 was initiated to talk about creating a local music teacher association. These meetings consisted of writing up and sending applications for people to join the organization, as well as creating by-laws and code of ethics that had to be submitted for approval prior to the official meeting. In October of 1955, fifteen music teachers met up to organize the Music Teachers of Volusia County. During the meeting the purpose of creating the organization was discussed. Francis Stevenson had been encouraged by the president of Florida State Music Teacher Association, Merle Sargent of Miami; she urged him of the importance of the formation of a local organization, and the local organization was formed.","\nVolusia County Music Teacher Association (VCMTA) is comprised of 21 professional music teachers throughout Volusia County organized in 1955, the association is affiliated with Music Teachers National Association and Florida State Music Teachers Association.","\nThe primary objective of the Volusia County Music Teachers Association is to provide musical growth and enrichment for its members and their students. By sponsoring events that improve and expand the opportunities for students and their teachers, VCMTA can increase public awareness of quality music education, thus making a contribution to the cultural life of the entire community.","The collection was processed in 2015. He had one sister, Pearl Lorraine Morrison Pitts (1938-1964). His father divorced Esther and married his second wife Ruth Swain (1911-1990). Morrison was primarily raised in Phoenix, Arizona. His family moved several times due to his father's job at munitions plants. He graduated from Compton High School in Los Angeles, California in 1952. Morrison earned an associate degree from Compton Junior College in 1955. Morrison entered the United States Air Force and served from 1955 to 1959. For three of those years in the service, he was stationed in Morocco and helped manage the library on the Air Force base. In 1970, he received his bachelor's degree in English from California State University. Morrison earned a Master's degree in Library Science from the University of Illinois at Urbana–Champaign in 1972 and attended the John F. Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University completing coursework in 1989. ","From 1972-1974, Morrison worked as a library director at the Frostproof Living Learning Library Center in Frostproof, Florida. He built a library and initiated outreach services for the African American and Hispanic migrant communities. In 1974, Morrison became the assistant director of Broward County Library in Broward County, Florida and served as deputy director from 1976-1987. He assisted in the growth of Broward County Library from 2 branches to 25 branches during this time. He also managed the formation of the new Main Library branch in downtown Fort Lauderdale, Florida.","Morrison lead in the construction of the Chicago Public Library's Harold Washington Library Center and became the library's chief director from 1987 to 1990. In 1990, Morrison returned to Broward County as director of Broward County Library and worked in that position until his retirement in 2003. Under his leadership, Broward County Library was awarded \"Library of the Year\" in 1996 and grew to 38 branches. During his tenure as director, Morrison fundraised for the creation of the African American Research Library and Cultural Center, which serves as a public library as well as a special collections research center dedicated to the history and culture of the African diaspora.
