Pat Ditto and other editors and contributors to this publication devoted their efforts to the St. Petersburg and Tampa Bay area in support of the local LGBTQ+ community. Although they primarily advocated for the empowerment and civil rights of women, they also spent a significant amount of time supporting political causes that would benefit the gay community as a whole. Significantly, Womyn's Words, as early as 1996, was promoting intersectional awareness with their \"Afro-Centric Series.\" A large portion of their publications was used to promote social activities such as concerts and dances, fundraisers for individuals in need, and praise for achievements within the community. As such it was a vital vehicle for organizing and building support in order to influence change for a group of people frequently marginalized by the larger society.","The Special Collections Department of the University of South Florida's Tampa Library maintains a substantial archive of Womyn's Words that includes issues not found in this collection. The first series includes documents from work conducted at the sanctuary proper, though additional related documents may be found in the subject files. Within series, folders are arranged alphabetically.","Audubon Florida's Corkscrew Swamp Sanctuary is a site which had been protected by Audubon wardens since the 1910s. With no interest from the state in preserving the area, Audubon Florida founded the sanctuary in the mid-1950s. From an initial 5,000 acres, it was expanded to more than 13,000 acres. It is especially notable for its bald cypress forest and cypress domes, the only part of the original Fakahatchee cypress strand in the area to be preserved from logging, which commenced in 1944. As part of the Corkscrew watershed, the sanctuary is part of the western Everglades. To save the remaining cypress and vital habitat from destruction, Audubon led an effort to raise money to buy the property. By 1954, 5,680 acres were accumulated, the last virgin cypress forest in the entire world and the most important Wood Stork rookery in the U.S. When offered the property, the state of Florida expressed no interest in the site, so Audubon took ownership. By the 1970s and 80s, development had altered the local landscape and made the sanctuary a much less isolated site. Under the leadership of Executive Director (and longtime Audubon employee) Ed Carlson in the 1980s and 90s, the sanctuary incoroporated more formal education programs, a visitor center, and a boardwalk that provides a scenic tour of parts of the property. These records document the activities of the sanctuary, including habitat studies, research materials, educational records, correspondence, and general management of the site, from invasive species mitigation to controlled burns.","The Audubon Florida Corkscrew Swamp Sanctuary Records donation included published book materials that are being processed for inclusion into the collection and will be traced on this record.","This collection consists of organizational papers, scientific data, field notebooks, correspondence, photographs and photographic slides, maps, and clippings.","Maps and publications related to the archival collection are cataloged individually and shelved in the Environment and Natural History Collection. Titles and links to the catalog record are available on this finding aid via the \"Cataloged Books, Publications, and Media\" and \"Cataloged Maps\" series.","None. The contents of the collection may be subject to copyright.  Visit the United States Copyright Office's website at http://www.copyright.gov/ for more information.","The Audubon Society Corkscrew Swamp Sanctuary records contain materials collecting the history of this sanctuary and the scientific and outreach work conducted on the property and surrounding area. To save the remaining cypress and vital habitat from destruction, Audubon led an effort to raise money to buy the property. He was a sportswriter for the Associated Press, consulting editor for Popular Science and several boating and travel magazines but always kept his hand in newspapers, free-lancing for the New York Times, the New York Herald Tribune, the St. Petersburg Times, the Tampa Bay Times and the Norwalk Hour.","Bob continued his newspaper writing on the side as he shifted his interest to public relations and worked in public relations for years as a director for the National Council on the Aging, Swissair North America and assistant director for Time Inc. In 1964 he joined the public relations firm of H. A. Bruno as an account executive and rose to the rank of executive vice-president. He supervised the Recreational Boating Industry Association and National Boat Show accounts. He organized the New York Airway Helicopter Service from New York midtown to the city's three airports.","In 1994 the Bob Black and Company Inc. Agency was formed in Connecticut, and later Bob relocated to Florida. His agency worked closely with non-profit organizations in Florida until 2018.","In 1995, 44 years after graduating from Florida Southern College, Bob returned to the school as an adjunct professor of journalism, marketing consultant and an executive committee member of the National Alumni Board. He later expanded his teaching of journalism to include the University of South Florida. He served on the board of Tilton School in Tilton, New Hampshire. Tilton School provides students with skills and experiences that empower them to navigate an ever-changing world. Bob received the 'Alumni of the Year' awards from both schools and the 'Hall of Fame Alumni Award' from the Florida Southern College Communications Department.","News and column writing were in his blood. After moving to Sun City Center, FL, he wrote columns in the NEWS of Sun City Center (SCC), The SCC Sun (a Tampa Tribune paper) and the SCC Observer. He served as deputy editor of the NEWS of SCC and since 2016 was a correspondent/contributor for the Tampa Bay Times. He served four years as a member of the board of directors and vice-president for two years for the South Shore Coalition for Mental Health and Aging in Sun City Center, an 11,000 resident community, and was the editor for the Community Resource Guide. Bob was a caring and generous man who supported local and national senior agencies, community service organizations and agencies, and schools.","Bob was born in Manhattan on July 5, 1929. He is predeceased by his parents, Eugene and Rita Black; his wife, Margarie Black; and two brothers, William Black and Eugene Black Jr. He is survived by his dedicated and loving life partner, Marcia Doscher, of Sun City Center, FL; his daughter, Patricia Kelly, of San Rafael, California, and his son, James Black, of Montclair, New Jersey; four grandchildren; one great-grandchild; a niece and nephews.","Bob had a great sense of humor and was always upbeat and positive.
