He studied at the University of Indiana, and graduated from the University of Chicago in 1954 with a Master's degree in International Relations. Carl Lyren was a writer all his life, and was employed at many major advertising agencies in Chicago and New York, also specializing in food writing and authoring several cookbooks. Also among his publications include French Cooking for the American Table (with Rene Verdon), 365 Ways to Cook Chicken, and Dogged Courage: The Struggle for Peleliu, 1944.
