His father was a prominent local businessman, and Andy attended private schools in Cincinnati as well as Phillips Academy in Andover, Massachusetts. Ireland graduated with a degree in business from Yale University in 1952 and completed graduate studies at Columbia University in New York in 1954.\nImmediately after graduating from Columbia, Andy Ireland relocated to Jacksonville, Florida, where secured employment with Barnett National Bank. At Barnett, Ireland worked in lending before getting the opportunity to travel the state as a representative of the bank, where he was able to meet many other people in Florida's business and banking communities. In the fall of 1961 he was offered a job as a senior vice-president of a bank in Fort Lauderdale. Shortly after this, he was presented with an opportunity to buy into the American National Bank in Winter Haven. He became president of the bank, and was active in the Winter Haven community. He was responsible for convincing the Boston Red Sox to use Winter Haven as their spring training home. He was elected to the Winter Haven City Commission in 1966. From 1968-70, Ireland served as a member of the Federal Reserve Bank , Jacksonville branch. In 1972 Andy Ireland ran in a special election for the Florida Senate, but was defeated in the runoff by Curtis Peterson. In 1976, U.S. Congressman James A. Haley (D-FL), of the 8th Congressional District, announced that he was retiring after serving in congress for twentythree years. Andy Ireland entered the Democratic primary for this open seat and was subsequently elected. Andy Ireland assumed office in January, 1977 and was assigned to the House International Relations Committee. He had initially been chosen to serve on the Banking Committee, but wanted to broaden his experience and not give the impression that he hadbeen elected to help banks. Ireland was a friend of House Speaker Thomas P. \"Tip\" O'Neil, and was appointed as a Democratic Whip. In subsequent years, Congressman Ireland served on the House Armed Services Committee and House Select Committee on Intelligence. In 1984 Andy Ireland announced that he would run for reelection as a member of the Republican Party. He was a conservative Democrat and no longer felt that the party\naccurately reflected his views. He served the remainder of his time in congress as a Republican. In 1992, Andy Ireland decided not to seek reelection. His father was a prominent local businessman, and Andy attended private schools in Cincinnati as well as Phillips Academy in Andover, Massachusetts. Ireland graduated with a degree in business from Yale University in 1952 and completed graduate studies at Columbia University in New York in 1954.\nImmediately after graduating from Columbia, Andy Ireland relocated to Jacksonville, Florida, where secured employment with Barnett National Bank. At Barnett, Ireland worked in lending before getting the opportunity to travel the state as a representative of the bank, where he was able to meet many other people in Florida's business and banking communities. In the fall of 1961 he was offered a job as a senior vice-president of a bank in Fort Lauderdale. Shortly after this, he was presented with an opportunity to buy into the American National Bank in Winter Haven. He became president of the bank, and was active in the Winter Haven community. He was responsible for convincing the Boston Red Sox to use Winter Haven as their spring training home. He was elected to the Winter Haven City Commission in 1966. From 1968-70, Ireland served as a member of the Federal Reserve Bank , Jacksonville branch. In 1972 Andy Ireland ran in a special election for the Florida Senate, but was defeated in the runoff by Curtis Peterson. In 1976, U.S. Congressman James A. Haley (D-FL), of the 8th Congressional District, announced that he was retiring after serving in congress for twentythree years. Andy Ireland entered the Democratic primary for this open seat and was subsequently elected. Andy Ireland assumed office in January, 1977 and was assigned to the House International Relations Committee. He had initially been chosen to serve on the Banking Committee, but wanted to broaden his experience and not give the impression that he hadbeen elected to help banks. Ireland was a friend of House Speaker Thomas P. \"Tip\" O'Neil, and was appointed as a Democratic Whip. Please contact lib-specialcollections@fsu.edu with requests for access or for more information.","Alexander Herman Schmidt was born on August 5, 1921, in Worcester, Massachusetts. He enlisted in the United States Navy in September 1942. He attended training in Rhode Island and Jacksonville, Florida until he went aboard the U.S.S. Natoma Bay in June 1943. He served aboard the U.S.S. Natoma Bay (CVE-62) , Composite Squadrom 63 (VC-63) until his discharge in December 1945. Initially, he was a gunner on a Grumman Avenger until he was grounded due to an ear infection. After that he serviced aircraft aboard the Natoma Bay. While aboard the Natoma Bay, Schmidt saw much combat in the Pacific, namely in the Philippines, Papua New Guinea, and other major Pacific Island battles such as Okinawa and Iwo Jima. Along with Pacific battles, his ship also survived a Kamikaze attack. He also wrote a memoir titled  Between Here and There  that details his life experiences. Schmidt passed in 2010.","This collection was donated by Jon Schmidt. Natoma Bay (CVE 62), Composite Squadron 63 (VC-63). The collection includes sets of uniforms, a bomber jacket, personal papers, medals, awards, and a plaque. His personal papers include personnel documents, two journals, captured Japanese papers, the  Bluejacket Manua l, Natoma Bay records, and various publications from and about the Natoma Bay Association. The papers primarily document his time spent in the Pacific Campaign, although his records also date his trainings in Rhode Island and Jacksonville, Florida. This sailor also has a memoir titled  Between Here and There  that details his life and military experiences. After the Nally estate was sold, Spencer worked for Racine Foster at Bromel-La. He graduated from UCF in 1990 summa cum laude with a BA in Liberal Studies and then found employment with Lyman B. Smith at the Smithsonian Museum of Natural History. Michael Spencer named a genus of bromeliads \"Racinaea\" in honor of Racine Foster. While engaged in his research, Spencer amassed this collection of materials concerning bromeliads and their collectors. He now lives in Frederick, Maryland where he has served on the Historic Preservation Commission since 2004.","Materials were rehoused in pH neutral folders and cartons. Photographs, negatives and slides were enclosed in polyester sleeves. Many of the materials were well organized and the arrangement was retained. The remainder were arranged by following the original arrangement as far as possible. Notes on folders were retained in the new folder. Paper clips were replaced with plastic clips or materials that belonged together were held together in a pH neutral paper sleeve. Loose-leaf notebooks that were badly rusted were discarded and the contents placed in folders. Items loose in the back of notebooks were foldered separately and marked accordingly. Notes from a film canister were written exactly as found as the label could not be removed. Albums falling apart were taken apart and foldered. Albums in reasonable condition had the photographs attached properly with corners and the pages interleaved to prevent sticking. Loose album pages in the Foster subseries on Plant Information were merely foldered as they were not in an album and were found without context.
