Spencer was born in Orlando and grew up in Winter Garden, Florida. He worked at Sand Hill Nursery near Lake Avalon and the Land of Bromeliads in Gotha before finding employment with Julian Nally. After the Nally estate was sold, Spencer worked for Racine Foster at Bromel-La. He graduated from UCF in 1990 summa cum laude with a BA in Liberal Studies and then found employment with Lyman B. Smith at the Smithsonian Museum of Natural History. Michael Spencer named a genus of bromeliads \"Racinaea\" in honor of Racine Foster. While engaged in his research, Spencer amassed this collection of materials concerning bromeliads and their collectors. He now lives in Frederick, Maryland where he has served on the Historic Preservation Commission since 2004.","Materials were rehoused in pH neutral folders and cartons. Photographs, negatives and slides were enclosed in polyester sleeves. Many of the materials were well organized and the arrangement was retained. The remainder were arranged by following the original arrangement as far as possible. Notes on folders were retained in the new folder. Paper clips were replaced with plastic clips or materials that belonged together were held together in a pH neutral paper sleeve. Loose-leaf notebooks that were badly rusted were discarded and the contents placed in folders. Items loose in the back of notebooks were foldered separately and marked accordingly. Notes from a film canister were written exactly as found as the label could not be removed. Albums falling apart were taken apart and foldered. Albums in reasonable condition had the photographs attached properly with corners and the pages interleaved to prevent sticking. Loose album pages in the Foster subseries on Plant Information were merely foldered as they were not in an album and were found without context. He attended local schools until St. Petersburg's segregated black schools were closed during the Depression. He completed his degree at a high school affiliated with Bethune-Cookman College in Daytona, where he became a protege of his mother's good friend, Mary McLeod Bethune. After two years of college at Bethune-Cookman, Ponder completed his junior senior years as Morehouse College in Atlanta. After his graduation in 1938, he worked in the Adjutant General's Office of the War Department, serving there until the end of World War II. He married Clara Meshaw on February 3, 1942. In 1945, Ernest and Clara Ponder returned to St. Petersburg. He began teaching at Gibbs High School, taking over his mother's courses and classroom after she was forced to retire due to ill health. He continued at Gibbs for the next 25 years, becoming chairman of the social studies department. He also directed the school's noted St. Cecelia Choir and later the chancel choir of Bethel Community Baptist Church. While a teacher, he did postgraduate courses at Fisk University, Stetson, New York University, and the University of South Florida. In 1969, he transferred to Lakewood High School and served there during the tumultuous first years of school integration until his retirement in 1979. Among his accomplishments at Lakewood was helping to develop a resource guide on African American history for the Pinellas County Public Schools. He also taught an iunovative black history course for Lakewood students, although the course was listed under the non-controversial title of \"Humanities.\" Following his retirement, Ponder continued his interests in African American history, working on a revised curriculum guide to the subject for 8th and 11th graders and writing \"A Panoramic Glimpse of Black History in St: Petersburg,\" a narrative that traces the black community's history back to John Donaldson in 1868, the city's first black landowner. He often spoke on black history topics to community groups and gave several interviews to reporters. He also became active in aging issues, serving on various state and local committees and advisory groups. Ponder's lifetime of community service and his legendary devotion to his students led to October 15, 1994, being declared Ernest Ayer Ponder Day in St. Petersburg, Pinellas County, and the State of Florida. His father was a prominent local businessman, and Andy attended private schools in Cincinnati as well as Phillips Academy in Andover, Massachusetts. Ireland graduated with a degree in business from Yale University in 1952 and completed graduate studies at Columbia University in New York in 1954.\nImmediately after graduating from Columbia, Andy Ireland relocated to Jacksonville, Florida, where secured employment with Barnett National Bank. At Barnett, Ireland worked in lending before getting the opportunity to travel the state as a representative of the bank, where he was able to meet many other people in Florida's business and banking communities. In the fall of 1961 he was offered a job as a senior vice-president of a bank in Fort Lauderdale. Shortly after this, he was presented with an opportunity to buy into the American National Bank in Winter Haven. He became president of the bank, and was active in the Winter Haven community. He was responsible for convincing the Boston Red Sox to use Winter Haven as their spring training home. He was elected to the Winter Haven City Commission in 1966. From 1968-70, Ireland served as a member of the Federal Reserve Bank , Jacksonville branch. In 1972 Andy Ireland ran in a special election for the Florida Senate, but was defeated in the runoff by Curtis Peterson. In 1976, U.S. Congressman James A. Haley (D-FL), of the 8th Congressional District, announced that he was retiring after serving in congress for twentythree years. Andy Ireland entered the Democratic primary for this open seat and was subsequently elected. Andy Ireland assumed office in January, 1977 and was assigned to the House International Relations Committee. He had initially been chosen to serve on the Banking Committee, but wanted to broaden his experience and not give the impression that he hadbeen elected to help banks. Ireland was a friend of House Speaker Thomas P. \"Tip\" O'Neil, and was appointed as a Democratic Whip. In subsequent years, Congressman Ireland served on the House Armed Services Committee and House Select Committee on Intelligence. In 1984 Andy Ireland announced that he would run for reelection as a member of the Republican Party. He was a conservative Democrat and no longer felt that the party\naccurately reflected his views. He served the remainder of his time in congress as a Republican. In 1992, Andy Ireland decided not to seek reelection. He retired from the congress and has since worked as a consultant.","Please Note that Congressman Ireland's staff changed \"Press Clippings\" to \"Media Reports\" in August of 1986. A Media Report contains newspaper clippings with additional analysis. Please refer to Boxes 69-76 for the subsequent Media Reports. Please note that files found in the State/National Issues should in some cases be crossreferenced with the District series (ex. \"Interstate 75\").\nPlease note that the Invitations Accepted series contains social and official invitations. Official invitations can and often include committee hearings and meetings as well as pertinent background information related to said hearings and meetings. This is especially relevant tothe House Armed Services Committee.","The materials in the Andy Ireland Congressional papers primarily relate to the subject's career in the U.S. House of Representatives.\nState of Florida and National Issues, 1977-1993 series provides information on issues that faced the United States as well as the state of Florida during this time period. Contained within are documents such as bills, reports, news articles, and correspondence. The correspondence is limited to communication between Congressman Ireland and other government officials. Very little correspondence exists between Congressman Ireland and hisconstituents, with the exception of letter standards that he used to respond to various inquiries. The arrangement of the collection, wherever possible, reflects the arrangement set up by Ireland's staff. Of special note is the information in the Defense section dealing with the A-12 Avenger project and defense spending. The district section contains documents, correspondence, newsletters, and news articles relating to specific counties within the subject's congressional district. The legislation Box Folder File Name section contains bill summaries, the congressman's individual voting records, and legislative activity guides. Videos are arranged alphabetically by subject and relate to specific issues (i.e. defense), general interest, and politics. The press section contains newspaper articles denoted as either media reports or press clippings. Photographs document the subject's career in the congress. Other sections contain information about the Congressional Classroom program, Andy Ireland's I-Team, and personal invitations.","The Congressman Andrew P. \"Andy\" Ireland Papers are owned by Florida Southern College.
