While his Father was in the navy, George's family lived at Pearl Harbor, and he witnessed the 1941 attack. George himself served in the navy for more than three years as a weather forecaster; for part of the time he was on the USS Bairoko. After graduating from the University of California, Los Angeles with a degree in meteorology in 1955, George Millay worked for a stockbroking firm until 1960. He married Anne Real in 1963; they eventually had three sons and a daughter.","\nIn 1958, Millay opened the Reef restaurant in Los Angeles with David Tallichet. He planned to create a submarine bar there so that customers could view sea creatures while enjoying cocktails. The plan failed because the water in the harbor was too cloudy. However, his interest in marine life introduced him to Dr. Kenneth Norris, curator at Marineland. Together with Milton Shedd and David DeMott, they organized the Marine Park Corporation to create a marine park in San Diego. Sea World opened in 1964 and expanded in 1970 with a park in Ohio followed by the Orlando park in 1972. Sea World Inc. opened an amusement park in Valencia California on 29th May 1971 in partnership with Newhall Land and Farming. Officially named \"Magic Mountain\", the park was designated \"Tragic Mountain\" by a reporter who was injured there. Sea World did not make a profit on the venture and sold out to its partner late in 1971. Millay resigned from Sea World Inc in 1974 because of a disagreement with his partners over how the company should develop.","\nGeorge Millay had spent a lot of time at Sea World in Orlando, and he thought that families would enjoy water activities as a break from the Florida heat. He pulled together ideas from a water playground at the Toronto World's Fair, a flume near Sacramento and a wave pool in Alabama, added a children's playgound, restrooms, gift shop and snack bar to create a new concept. He formed the Leisure Marine Corporation to develop his idea. Initially, the company ran the Seven Seas park in Arlington, TX, for a season, but the venture did not develop further. Wet 'n Wild eventually became a reality in Orlando, where it opened in 1977. The company took over the failing Seven Seas park and redeveloped it into the second Wet 'n Wild in 1983 followed by Las Vegas in 1985. Additional sites opened in Garland, TX, Brazil and Mexico. Wet 'n Wild was named the Best of Aquatics for 2003 by Aquatics International magazine.","\nMillay retired from Wet 'n Wild in 1998, but he continued to work on new projects. He designed and patented a system for moving visitors down into the center of a circular aquarium so that everyone had a good view of the fish. Millay partnered with William Watts and David Powell in creating a company named Sea Venture to sell the system. At the time of his death in 2006, no examples of the system had been sold.","\nGeorge Millay received Lifetime Achievement Awards from the International Association of Amusement Parks and Attractions and the Themed Entertainment Association, and he was named the Father of the Waterpark Industry by the World Waterpark Association. His father was a prominent local businessman, and Andy attended private schools in Cincinnati as well as Phillips Academy in Andover, Massachusetts. Ireland graduated with a degree in business from Yale University in 1952 and completed graduate studies at Columbia University in New York in 1954.\nImmediately after graduating from Columbia, Andy Ireland relocated to Jacksonville, Florida, where secured employment with Barnett National Bank. At Barnett, Ireland worked in lending before getting the opportunity to travel the state as a representative of the bank, where he was able to meet many other people in Florida's business and banking communities. In the fall of 1961 he was offered a job as a senior vice-president of a bank in Fort Lauderdale. Shortly after this, he was presented with an opportunity to buy into the American National Bank in Winter Haven. He became president of the bank, and was active in the Winter Haven community. He was responsible for convincing the Boston Red Sox to use Winter Haven as their spring training home. He was elected to the Winter Haven City Commission in 1966. From 1968-70, Ireland served as a member of the Federal Reserve Bank , Jacksonville branch. In 1972 Andy Ireland ran in a special election for the Florida Senate, but was defeated in the runoff by Curtis Peterson. In 1976, U.S. Congressman James A. Haley (D-FL), of the 8th Congressional District, announced that he was retiring after serving in congress for twentythree years. Andy Ireland entered the Democratic primary for this open seat and was subsequently elected. Andy Ireland assumed office in January, 1977 and was assigned to the House International Relations Committee. He had initially been chosen to serve on the Banking Committee, but wanted to broaden his experience and not give the impression that he hadbeen elected to help banks. Ireland was a friend of House Speaker Thomas P. \"Tip\" O'Neil, and was appointed as a Democratic Whip. In subsequent years, Congressman Ireland served on the House Armed Services Committee and House Select Committee on Intelligence. In 1984 Andy Ireland announced that he would run for reelection as a member of the Republican Party. He was a conservative Democrat and no longer felt that the party\naccurately reflected his views. He served the remainder of his time in congress as a Republican. In 1992, Andy Ireland decided not to seek reelection. He retired from the congress and has since worked as a consultant.","Please Note that Congressman Ireland's staff changed \"Press Clippings\" to \"Media Reports\" in August of 1986. A Media Report contains newspaper clippings with additional analysis. Please refer to Boxes 69-76 for the subsequent Media Reports. Please note that files found in the State/National Issues should in some cases be crossreferenced with the District series (ex. \"Interstate 75\").\nPlease note that the Invitations Accepted series contains social and official invitations. Official invitations can and often include committee hearings and meetings as well as pertinent background information related to said hearings and meetings. This is especially relevant tothe House Armed Services Committee.","The materials in the Andy Ireland Congressional papers primarily relate to the subject's career in the U.S. House of Representatives.\nState of Florida and National Issues, 1977-1993 series provides information on issues that faced the United States as well as the state of Florida during this time period. Contained within are documents such as bills, reports, news articles, and correspondence. The correspondence is limited to communication between Congressman Ireland and other government officials. Very little correspondence exists between Congressman Ireland and hisconstituents, with the exception of letter standards that he used to respond to various inquiries. The arrangement of the collection, wherever possible, reflects the arrangement set up by Ireland's staff. Of special note is the information in the Defense section dealing with the A-12 Avenger project and defense spending. The district section contains documents, correspondence, newsletters, and news articles relating to specific counties within the subject's congressional district. The legislation Box Folder File Name section contains bill summaries, the congressman's individual voting records, and legislative activity guides. Videos are arranged alphabetically by subject and relate to specific issues (i.e. defense), general interest, and politics. The press section contains newspaper articles denoted as either media reports or press clippings. Photographs document the subject's career in the congress. Other sections contain information about the Congressional Classroom program, Andy Ireland's I-Team, and personal invitations.","The Congressman Andrew P. \"Andy\" Ireland Papers are owned by Florida Southern College. Spencer was born in Orlando and grew up in Winter Garden, Florida. He worked at Sand Hill Nursery near Lake Avalon and the Land of Bromeliads in Gotha before finding employment with Julian Nally. After the Nally estate was sold, Spencer worked for Racine Foster at Bromel-La. He graduated from UCF in 1990 summa cum laude with a BA in Liberal Studies and then found employment with Lyman B. Smith at the Smithsonian Museum of Natural History. Michael Spencer named a genus of bromeliads \"Racinaea\" in honor of Racine Foster. While engaged in his research, Spencer amassed this collection of materials concerning bromeliads and their collectors. He now lives in Frederick, Maryland where he has served on the Historic Preservation Commission since 2004.","Materials were rehoused in pH neutral folders and cartons. Photographs, negatives and slides were enclosed in polyester sleeves. Many of the materials were well organized and the arrangement was retained. The remainder were arranged by following the original arrangement as far as possible. Notes on folders were retained in the new folder. Paper clips were replaced with plastic clips or materials that belonged together were held together in a pH neutral paper sleeve. Loose-leaf notebooks that were badly rusted were discarded and the contents placed in folders. Items loose in the back of notebooks were foldered separately and marked accordingly. Notes from a film canister were written exactly as found as the label could not be removed. Albums falling apart were taken apart and foldered. Albums in reasonable condition had the photographs attached properly with corners and the pages interleaved to prevent sticking. Loose album pages in the Foster subseries on Plant Information were merely foldered as they were not in an album and were found without context. At age five, her parents enrolled her in children's art classes at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. She later studied at the Art Students League of New York and attended the High School of Music and Art in NYC (now the Fiorello La Guardia High School for Music and Art and Performing Arts) until she was sixteen years old. \n \nColton attended Parsons School of Design and received a Bachelor of Fine Arts from Washington University School of Fine Art in St. Louis. She received her M.A. from the University of Central Florida (UCF) and studied abroad in San Miguel de Allendé, Mexico. From 1987 to 2002, Colton worked at UCF as the Director and Designer of Publications. During her seventeen-year tenure at UCF, she oversaw the design and graphics for all UCF publications, crafting a consistent visual identity for the university. Her work won multiple CASE Advancement Awards and Bronze Quill Awards, including a CASE Advancement Award in Merit for the 2000-2001 UCF Football advertising campaign \"Time Has Come for UCF.\" ","After leaving UCF, Colton focused on her fine arts career, developing a passion for bronze sculpture. Her multimedia work consists of large outdoor sculptures — often of horses — including Renewal , showcased at EPCOT's Flower and Garden Invitational Sculpture Exhibit and bought by the city of Casselberry in 2014. Wind Dancer , a life-size sculpture of Pegasus, was purchased by UCF in 2007 and is still displayed today. Colton has exhibited widely, won multiple awards, and received six grants supporting her artistic work. She has said herself, \"I strive for my works to intrigue the viewer, invite a closer look, and exhibit strength, determination, and vulnerability.\" As of 2026, Colton resides in Orlando, Florida.","Processed by and finding aid prepared by Ava Botwin in 2026.","Other materials related to advertising and marketing at UCF can be found in the UCF Audio, Visual, and Multi-Media Collection.","The Mindy Colton collection, 1986-2009, features samples of Mindy Colton's graphic designs during her seventeen-year career at the University of Central Florida (UCF). While serving As Director and Designer of Publications, Colton oversaw various design projects for UCF, including academic factbooks, annual reports, posters, calendars, advertising campaigns, and event invitations, made for students, faculty, staff, and the public. Her work frequently features not only graphic design, but also her own artwork. ","This collection offers a glimpse into how UCF advertised and marketed its academic programs and tracks to prospective students from the late 1980s through the early 2000s. Additionally, it records many campus events, both academic and not, as well as annual and fiscal reports, which document expectations and summaries of the university's academic year. ","Series I: Personal, 1990-2009 contains collected material that highlight Colton's achievements or feature her artwork in them. ","Series II: University Publications, 1987-2002 consists of printed publications produced by UCF, such as fact books, brochures, branded folders, and awards. ","Series III: Reports, 1986-2000, contains annual reports, financial or fiscal reports, President's reports, and untitled reports about the university. ","Series IV: Events Publications, 1988-2003 consists of advertising materials created for specific events held at or by UCF. The General subseries includes both on and off-campus events tied to the university. The Football subseries consist of invitations and advertisements for UCF football games. This subseries also holds materials related to 'The Time Is Now', UCF's advertising campaign to join its first NCAA college football conference in 2000.
