His father was a prominent local businessman, and Andy attended private schools in Cincinnati as well as Phillips Academy in Andover, Massachusetts. Ireland graduated with a degree in business from Yale University in 1952 and completed graduate studies at Columbia University in New York in 1954.
Immediately after graduating from Columbia, Andy Ireland relocated to Jacksonville, Florida, where secured employment with Barnett National Bank. At Barnett, Ireland worked in lending before getting the opportunity to travel the state as a representative of the bank, where he was able to meet many other people in Florida's business and banking communities. In the fall of 1961 he was offered a job as a senior vice-president of a bank in Fort Lauderdale. Shortly after this, he was presented with an opportunity to buy into the American National Bank in Winter Haven. He became president of the bank, and was active in the Winter Haven community. He was responsible for convincing the Boston Red Sox to use Winter Haven as their spring training home. He was elected to the Winter Haven City Commission in 1966. From 1968-70, Ireland served as a member of the Federal Reserve Bank , Jacksonville branch. In 1972 Andy Ireland ran in a special election for the Florida Senate, but was defeated in the runoff by Curtis Peterson. In 1976, U.S. Congressman James A. Haley (D-FL), of the 8th Congressional District, announced that he was retiring after serving in congress for twentythree years. Andy Ireland entered the Democratic primary for this open seat and was subsequently elected. Andy Ireland assumed office in January, 1977 and was assigned to the House International Relations Committee. He had initially been chosen to serve on the Banking Committee, but wanted to broaden his experience and not give the impression that he hadbeen elected to help banks. Ireland was a friend of House Speaker Thomas P. "Tip" O'Neil, and was appointed as a Democratic Whip. In subsequent years, Congressman Ireland served on the House Armed Services Committee and House Select Committee on Intelligence. In 1984 Andy Ireland announced that he would run for reelection as a member of the Republican Party. He was a conservative Democrat and no longer felt that the party
accurately reflected his views. Born in 1942 to Beatrice Bornstein Ettinger and Leon Ettinger, Crotty earned a B.S. in Nursing from the University of Florida in 1963. Following graduation, she lived in San Francisco, California with her husband, Garrett Crotty, devoting her time to volunteer work, community service, and raising their three sons. ","In 1968, she joined the League of Women Voters of San Francisco. When her family returned to Florida in 1971, she remained active in the League, participating in local and national initiatives, such as efforts to ratify the Equal Rights Amendment (ERA). She served as President of the Seminole County League of Women Voters from 1973 to 1975, then as a board member of the Florida League for six years. She worked at various times alongside her mother, Beatrice Ettinger, who helped to establish the Central Florida Educational Consortium for Women and served as Vice President of the Florida League of Women Voters. Crotty received a Lifetime Achievement Award from the League of Women Voters in 2021. ","Crotty later served as Executive Director of the Tri County League of Cities, representing municipalities in Orange, Seminole, and Osceola counties, and as a faculty member on the Florida League of Cities Institute for Elected Municipal Officials. She also served on the East Central Florida Regional Planning Council, the Florida Environmental Efficiency Study Commission, and the Florida Governor's Commission on the Status of Women (COSOW). Charged with improving public awareness of the needs and concerns of Florida women, COSOW advocated for women's education, employment, equal pay, and domestic violence support. Stuart Jr. Collection was originally located in room 150C at the John C. Hitt Library. A series level finding aid was created by Judith Beale and Andrea Booker in 2006 to provide a basic access point to the collection. David Benjamin and Burak Ogreten met early 2017 and decided that the collection had to be processed at a folder level rather than series level. Special Collections staff transferred the collection from room 150C to 501C. Burak assigned Kae Lorentz, John Settle, Joseph Kaminski, Courtney Toelle, and Steven Craig Trelstad to work on the collection. Processing started in August 2017 and ended on November 2018. Initially, there were 114 linear feet of materials (114 boxes) in the collection. After the processing completed, the total linear footage dropped to 85.25 linear feet (93 boxes and 1 flat file).
","
We did all the effort to keep the collection in the original order as it was received from the donor.
