The aircraft was struck by flak over the target of the coastal defenses near Boulogne, France. The aircraft entered a spin, rolled on its back and crashed into the English Channel. The loss was assigned Missing Air Crew Report MACR15604. The remains of the crew where not found. He graduated New Rochelle High School.  Prior to joining the U.S. Army, he worked as a civilian courier for the U.S. Army.  He entered service with the U.S. Army Air Corps on February 16, 1943 and attended Basic training in Miami Beach, FL, Armament training at Buckley and Lowry Fields in Colorado, and gunnery school at Kingman Field, AZ. Mckee Sr. was assigned to the 324th Squadron, 91st Bombardment Group, and was sent to England on December 31, 1943.  The B-17 on which McKee Sr. served was combat damaged and crashed into the North Sea on March 29, 1944 on Mckee Sr's seven mission.  The entire crew was rescued by the German Navy.  McKee Sr. became as prisoner of war at Luft Stalag 17B near Krems, Austria. He was liberated in Bramall, Bavaria on May 3, 1945 by the 13th U.S. Armored Division and returned to the U.S. on June 12, 1945.  After the war, Mckee Sr. worked as a civilian fireman at Fr. Slocum, NY. He devoted the remainder of his life to lobbying for recognition and compensation of former U.S. prisoners of war.","Mckee Sr. passed away on January 16, 1996 and is buried in Arlington National Cemetery, Arlington, VA.","Transferred from the Institute on World War II and the Human Experience to FSU Libraries Special Collections \u0026 Archives in July 2022.","This collection relates to William Edward McKee Sr. who served as a sergeant with the 324th Squadron, 91st Heavy Bombardment Group, 8th Air Force in Europe during World War II. He graduated New Rochelle High School.  Prior to joining the U.S. Army, he worked as a civilian courier for the U.S. Army.  He entered service with the U.S. Army Air Corps on February 16, 1943 and attended Basic training in Miami Beach, FL, Armament training at Buckley and Lowry Fields in Colorado, and gunnery school at Kingman Field, AZ. Mckee Sr. was assigned to the 324th Squadron, 91st Bombardment Group, and was sent to England on December 31, 1943.  The B-17 on which McKee Sr. served was combat damaged and crashed into the North Sea on March 29, 1944 on Mckee Sr's seven mission.  The entire crew was rescued by the German Navy.  McKee Sr. became as prisoner of war at Luft Stalag 17B near Krems, Austria. He was liberated in Bramall, Bavaria on May 3, 1945 by the 13th U.S. Armored Division and returned to the U.S. on June 12, 1945.  After the war, Mckee Sr. worked as a civilian fireman at Fr. Slocum, NY. Fritz and Lois retired to Deland, Florida in 1969 where Fritz was a language professor at Stetson University. Lois and Fritz were very early members of the Unitarian Universalist Church in Deland.\n \nLois was preceded in death by her husband Fritz and her grandson Jigme Mueller. Ryan was born on February 3, 1925 in Binghamton, NY and was 20 years old when he flew on the \"Lonesome Lady\" B-24 bomber from Okinawa to Kyoto on a mission to bomb Kure Harbor, when his plane was shot down. Ryan and all but one of his crew members were captured and taken prisoner to Hiroshima's Chugoku Military Police Headquarters. Two of his crew members, Pilot 2nd Lieutenant Thomas C. Cartwright and Tail Gunner Staff Sergeant William E. Abel survived the war. Cartwright was moved to Tokyo before the Atomic Bomb fell onto Hiroshima on August 6, 1945, but Ryan was killed in action during this bombing. Abel was held at Kure, Japan.","Transferred from the Institute on World War II and the Human Experience to FSU Libraries Special Collections \u0026 Archives in July 2022.","This collection relates to James M. Ryan who served as a 2nd Lieutenant Bombardier on a B-24 Bomber with the 866th Squadron, 494th Bombardment Group, stationed in Okinawa. Ryan's plane was shot down over Kyoto on July 28, 1945, and he was then imprisoned by the Japanese (declared missing in action by the United States). Ryan subsequently perished 500 feet from the epicenter of the atomic bombing of Hiroshima, Japan on August 6, 1945. Please contact lib-special@unf.edu to schedule an appointment.","Homer Hudson Humphries, Jr., was born in Jacksonville, Florida on January 15, 1930, and attended local schools. After graduation from the Bolles School, he received a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1958 from the University of Virginia, and a Bachelor of Laws degree from Stetson University in 1961. His early legal work included positions as the Assistant Duval County Solicitor (1963-1965), and Assistant State Attorney for Duval County (1965-1967). In June 1967, he was elected from Ward 8 to the Jacksonville City Council (prior to Consolidation), and under the new consolidated government, won election to the City Council from District 13. He became Council President on July 1, 1970, the third and the last President of consolidated government's first City Council. In 1971, he did not seek re-election to the Council, and returned to private law practice in Jacksonville.","Humphries was active in a number of civic, fraternal, professional, and religious organizations. A month after Humphries left the Council in 1971, Mayor Hans Tanzler appointed him to the first Downtown Development Authority (DDA), and he served the next eight years as DDA Chairman.
