It started in 1975 as the Broward County Library \"Project for the Economically Disadvantaged\" but soon became internationally known as Library-in-Action Project. The project ran until 2002.","The Von D. Mizell Library in the historic Sistrunk neighborhood, which became part of the Broward County Library system in 1974, was the headquarters of Library-In-Action. As a result of LIA-authored grant funding, four additional libraries were opened: Dania Beach Library (Feb. 5, 1979), Collier City Library (1980), Rock Island Library (1980), and Carver Ranches Library (1982). Also in 1980, the Von D. Mizell Library moved to a new building with a larger collection. These five libraries provided youth and adults with free access to books, literacy classes, and tutoring services. They also created tailor-made services and programs based on community input.","Broward County Library's Assistant Director, Samuel Morrison, hired an administrative team to oversee the LIA program: Tyrone Bryant (Director), Janet Hansen (Assistant Director), and Tanya Simons-Oparah (Outreach Services Coordinator). The LIA team earned millions of dollars in grants, trained librarians and staff, and conducted programming. ","From 1977 to 1980, Library-In-Action staff canvassed neighborhoods and offered library resources to the Collier City community before the Collier City Library was built. The LIA's Homework Assistance program bussed children from elementary schools to the Collier City Library, where they received help with their homework and school projects, graduating more than 200 students in its early years. ","The LIA project also involved a Bookmobile and a Footmobile service - where staff went door-to-door promoting libraries and delivering books. Other notable programs included speakers such as Alex Haley (author of \"Roots\") in 1980, Elton Fox, and Tom Feelings. The Black Heritage program educated children on Africa, and an African hut was constructed in the Von D. Tyrone Bryant (1942-1988) was a graduate of Florida Agriculture and Mechanical University. Prior to his directorship at the Langston Hughes Library he was the director of the Committee for the Corona-East Elmhurst Community Corp, where he began working in 1967. The Committee's activism ultimately formed the Langston Hughes Cultural Center and Library in the Corona neighborhood in New York City. Tyrone Bryant became the first Director of the Langston Hughes Library which opened April 26, 1969 and served the needs of inner-city residents. Bryant moved to Fort Lauderdale in 1975 to become the LIA Director. The many programs conducted during the BCL LIA project originated from Tyrone Byrant's experience with programs at the Langston Hughes Library, such as the Homework Assistance Program. In 1983 Bryant was named Assistant Director of the Broward County Library system in charge of Special Services while also retaining his position as Project Director of LIA. Bryant also served as the chairman of the Sistrunk Historical Festival from 1983 until 1988. He married Claudia Wright in 1986. Tyrone Bryant died on February 24, 1988 at age 45. The festival began as a two-day event to initiate economic redevelopment and held programming on African American culture, and under Bryant's chairmanship grew to a month-long event drawing over 100,000 people by 1988.","This collection received file level processing. Mizell Library as part of the programming.","LIA Director Tyrone Bryant coined the name \"Library-In-Action\". His father was a prominent local businessman, and Andy attended private schools in Cincinnati as well as Phillips Academy in Andover, Massachusetts. Ireland graduated with a degree in business from Yale University in 1952 and completed graduate studies at Columbia University in New York in 1954.\nImmediately after graduating from Columbia, Andy Ireland relocated to Jacksonville, Florida, where secured employment with Barnett National Bank. At Barnett, Ireland worked in lending before getting the opportunity to travel the state as a representative of the bank, where he was able to meet many other people in Florida's business and banking communities. In the fall of 1961 he was offered a job as a senior vice-president of a bank in Fort Lauderdale. Shortly after this, he was presented with an opportunity to buy into the American National Bank in Winter Haven. He became president of the bank, and was active in the Winter Haven community. He was responsible for convincing the Boston Red Sox to use Winter Haven as their spring training home. He was elected to the Winter Haven City Commission in 1966. From 1968-70, Ireland served as a member of the Federal Reserve Bank , Jacksonville branch. In 1972 Andy Ireland ran in a special election for the Florida Senate, but was defeated in the runoff by Curtis Peterson. In 1976, U.S. Congressman James A. Haley (D-FL), of the 8th Congressional District, announced that he was retiring after serving in congress for twentythree years. Andy Ireland entered the Democratic primary for this open seat and was subsequently elected. Andy Ireland assumed office in January, 1977 and was assigned to the House International Relations Committee. He had initially been chosen to serve on the Banking Committee, but wanted to broaden his experience and not give the impression that he hadbeen elected to help banks. Ireland was a friend of House Speaker Thomas P. \"Tip\" O'Neil, and was appointed as a Democratic Whip. In subsequent years, Congressman Ireland served on the House Armed Services Committee and House Select Committee on Intelligence. In 1984 Andy Ireland announced that he would run for reelection as a member of the Republican Party. He was a conservative Democrat and no longer felt that the party\naccurately reflected his views. He served the remainder of his time in congress as a Republican. In 1992, Andy Ireland decided not to seek reelection. He retired from the congress and has since worked as a consultant.","Please Note that Congressman Ireland's staff changed \"Press Clippings\" to \"Media Reports\" in August of 1986. A Media Report contains newspaper clippings with additional analysis. Please refer to Boxes 69-76 for the subsequent Media Reports. Please note that files found in the State/National Issues should in some cases be crossreferenced with the District series (ex. \"Interstate 75\").\nPlease note that the Invitations Accepted series contains social and official invitations. Official invitations can and often include committee hearings and meetings as well as pertinent background information related to said hearings and meetings. This is especially relevant tothe House Armed Services Committee.","The materials in the Andy Ireland Congressional papers primarily relate to the subject's career in the U.S. House of Representatives.\nState of Florida and National Issues, 1977-1993 series provides information on issues that faced the United States as well as the state of Florida during this time period. Contained within are documents such as bills, reports, news articles, and correspondence. The correspondence is limited to communication between Congressman Ireland and other government officials. Very little correspondence exists between Congressman Ireland and hisconstituents, with the exception of letter standards that he used to respond to various inquiries. The arrangement of the collection, wherever possible, reflects the arrangement set up by Ireland's staff. Of special note is the information in the Defense section dealing with the A-12 Avenger project and defense spending. The district section contains documents, correspondence, newsletters, and news articles relating to specific counties within the subject's congressional district. The legislation Box Folder File Name section contains bill summaries, the congressman's individual voting records, and legislative activity guides. Videos are arranged alphabetically by subject and relate to specific issues (i.e. defense), general interest, and politics. The press section contains newspaper articles denoted as either media reports or press clippings. Photographs document the subject's career in the congress. Other sections contain information about the Congressional Classroom program, Andy Ireland's I-Team, and personal invitations.","The Congressman Andrew P. \"Andy\" Ireland Papers are owned by Florida Southern College.
