After his service in the European Theater during World War II, Patti was transferred to the Office of Strategic Services (OSS – precursor to CIA) in Hanoi, Vietnam. While there, Patti was named head of a secret OSS mission under President Franklin Delano Roosevelt designed to support anti-colonialism in Asia. Part of Patti's mission was to befriend Ho Chi Minh and train Ho's men to fight the occupying Japanese forces in Vietnam. Patti was later pulled out of Vietnam by the United States in 1945 but he continued his friendly relations with Ho and his representatives. After his retirement, Patti worked closely with federal agencies in creating plans for civil governance in the event of a catastrophic attack on the US. Patti also became a well-known writer, recounting his work with Ho in 1945 and the changing face of politics in the Indochina region. Held for publication in the 1950s due to its controversial subject matter on communism, Patti's book, Why Viet Nam? Prelude to America's Albatross was published in 1980 and became known as a critical work on the study of politics in Asia. The folder also holds a program of the Veteran's Day tribute to Japanese American World War II Veterans in 2005, which contains historical photos of these veterans during and after the war. the program also has a DVD of these photographs and interviews with the veterans. McCusker III was born February 27, 1922 in Bronx, NY. He attended Evander Childs High School, Bronx, NY and Manhattan College. He entered the U.S. Army Air Corps on March 25, 1943  and completed pilot's training.  He flew C-47 transport planes with the 18th Troop Carrier Squadron in North Africa, Sicily, India, Burma, and Southern France. He flew missions that supported partisans in Northern Italy from January to May 1945.  He was discharged from active service on January 18, 1947 with the rank of Major. He continued to serve and retired as a Lieutenant Colonel in the Air Force Reserves. McCusker III also flew the following aircraft: PT-17, BT-63, AT-11, AT-9, T-28, C-45,  and C-46. Because of the number of missions flown, he was awarded the Air Medal with two oak leaf clusters and Distinguished Flying Cross. McCusker III  was a member of the American Legion, Moose Lodge, VFW, International Police Association, Orlando Chapter of 10-13 Club, China-Burma- India Veterans Organization, and a lifelong member of the Elks Lodge of Winter Park. Mildred graduated from Stair Technical School while William enlisted into the United States Army in mid-1943 at Fort Oglethorpe, Georgia. Before William enlisted, Mildred worked at the Tennessee Eastman Company. William completed basic training at Fort McClellan, Alabama where Mildred visited him frequently. During mid-1944, William was sent overseas with the 160th Infantry Regiment of the 40th Infantry Division of the United States Army to the Philippines. While overseas, Mildred gave birth to their son William, Jr. \"Billy.\" William was involved in the invasion of Lingayen Gulf in Luzon, the Philippines in January of 1945.
