Father Jacob Levine, mother Fanny, and sister Lillian. During the early days of the Great Depression, he, and his older sister, were placed into a children's home because his parents were no longer able to feed them. After the depression ended, he and his sister moved back into the family's apartment and at ten-years-old Seymour began delivering silk ties his father made to business customers which heled support the family. Soon afterwards, his father bought him a cornet which began his life-long musical career. He graduated high school at age sixteen after skipping two grades. ","In 1940, Seymour joined, as a founding member, the New York Post Office Symphony Orchestra playing the cornet. However, his life changed in March, 1941, when he was offered a job with the Federal government in Washington, D.C. ","During the last twenty years of his thirty-three-year career with the Interstate Commerce Commission, a now defunct agency, Seymour composed official correspondence for the agency. Composing was his passion in life –– letters, music, lyrics and, later, musical plays. ","Also, in 1941, Seymour and his fiancé, Shirley Rothbard, secretly married so she can (sic) join him in Washington, D.C. They were officially married three months later with a large, planned wedding in New York City. They had two children and remained happily married until her untimely death from cancer in 1961 when she was thirty-nine years old. ","Seymour wrote his first song titled \"Tappin' Away\" including both the music and lyrics in 1939 and completed his sixty-third song in 1989. While living in Greenbelt, Maryland, from 1941 until mid-1982 (except when he was in the U.S. Army in World War II including fighting in the Battle of the Bulge), he was always busy with music and received many awards with his talent. Seymour joined the Greenbelt Concert Band and was an active member for many years. The two musical plays entitled \"Undershaft\" copyrighted in 1983 and \"David\" copyrighted in 1985, were written while he was living in Pikesville, Maryland. They were the highlights of his life-long hobby and, together, contained twenty-one songs and three poems. Grierson\nattended the University of Toronto where he obtained a B.S. in Biological and Agricultural Sciences and his M.S. and Ph.D. in Agricultural Science. Grierson worked in the agricultural industry in Canada until the outbreak of World War Two. Grierson served as a navigator in the Royal Canadian Air Force and was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross and the Air Force Cross. After the war he accepted a position at the University of Florida's Citrus Research and Education Center in Lake Alfred, Florida. Beginning in 1952 Grierson served\nthe University of Florida's Citrus Research and Education Center for thirty years. He also taught evening classes at Florida Southern College in the 1950s and 1960s. Dr. Grierson officially retired at the end of 1982. Following his retirement, Grierson and his wife left Florida to participate in a two-year U.S. Aide Project to assist in the domestic distribution and marketing of food in Jamaica. While in Jamaica, Grierson was the project leader for fruits and vegetables.","William Grierson was an innovator in fresh citrus fruit research and harvesting. His contributions to the Florida citrus industry include, but are not limited to, designing the modern degreening room which became standard throughout Florida and the transition to and standardization of pallet boxes. He also developed packing line machinery modifications that resulted in maximum packing line efficiency. Grierson's research identified the correlation between grapefruit chilling injury to fruit maturity, diagnosed\nseveral physiological disorders that plagued citrus fruit, and aided in the clearance of postharvest fungicides in the United States and around the world. In 1965, Grierson wrote a letter to citrus packers, the first Packinghouse Newsletter, which became standar procedure thereafter. Grierson is also credited with helping to establish the group known as the Florida Citrus Packers and was well-known for educating consumers on the use of pesticides and cosmetic treatments. Grierson published many scholarly journal articles\nand papers and is recognized for his work worldwide.","Because of his dedication to citrus research and education, as well as his numerous scholarly accomplishments, Grierson was awarded the title of Professor Emeritus by the University of Florida. After his retirement, Grierson continued to publish articles regarding the citrus industry as well as the effect of global warming and climate change. Dr. William Grierson was inducted into the Florida Citrus Hall of Fame in 1995.
