By 1942, he took military leave to serve as an officer in the U.S. Army Quartermaster Corps in Richmond, Virginia, and was deployed to the Philippines and Japan as part of the occupation forces. He returned to Tampa in 1946 to become Assistant Manager at the Tampa Terrace Hotel and was promoted to Executive Manager a year later. He remained at the Tampa Terrace Hotel until its impending sale to the Michel Group and his termination in 1964. The building was later demolished after it was returned to the possession of the Corral family.","In 1966, Gay was appointed as Receiver to operate the Floridan Motor Hotel (under court supervision on behalf of Penn Mutual Insurance Company). The sale of the Floridan was the result of a mortgage foreclosure again the owners, the Paul H. Smith family. Gay was made manager of the hotel during the five year litigation proceedings and continued to operate the business while the case was being settled.","Bartley Gay was active in the community and served as president to the Tampa Hotel Association, director of the Florida State Hotel and Motel Association, and as a member of the Mayor's Biracial Committee. Please contact lib-specialcollections@fsu.edu with requests for access or for more information.","Bascom Walden Sparkman was born on December 18, 1910, in Florida and was raised in Plant City.  Sparkman married Eleanor Marguerite Murrill on July 25, 1937, in Mulberry, FL.  He was drafted into the U.S. Army at Camp Blanding, FL induction center on June 18, 1941. Sparkman was then sent to Fort Knox, KY for basic training. Assigned to Service Company, 753rd Tank Battalion, he received additional training at Fort Polk, LA and Fort Hood, TX. ","He departed overseas with his company on April 25, 1943.  The company arrived at Arze, Algeria on May 30, 1943.  Assigned to support the 45th Infantry Division, the company then landed on July 23, 1943, at Sicily, Italy.  At the conclusion of the campaign, the 753rd Tank Battalion participated with the landings at Salerno, Italy on September 15, 1943, when it was assigned to the 36th Infantry Division. Sparkman participated with his company in the drive towards Rome and was present during the Cassino battles.  Sparkman also participated in the landings of Southern France during Operation Dragoon in August 1944. He remained with his company through the campaigns in Germany and was discharged in June 1945.  Sparkman passed away in Tampa, FL on November 13, 1984.","This collection was donated by Susanne Sparkman Newell, daughter of Boscom Walden Sparkman. Arsenault serves as the John Hope Franklin Professor of Southern History and Director of the University Honors Program at the University of South Florida (USF), St. Petersburg. A member of the USF faculty since 1980, he specializes in the social, political, and environmental history and historiography of the American South, though\nhis teaching and research interests cover nearly all areas of American history, culture, and civilization. ","A native of Hyannis, Massachusetts, he also lived in Virginia, Maryland, and Florida (the Pensacola, Jacksonville, and Amelia Island areas) before attending college. He completed his undergraduate education at Princeton (B.A., 1969) and finished his doctorate at Brandeis (Ph.D., 1981). In addition to his teaching and research at USF, he has also taught at the University of Minnesota, Brandeis University, and in France at the Universite d'Angers, where he served as a Fullbright Lecturer in 1984-1985. Author of two prize-winning books, The Wild Ass of the Ozarks: Jeff Davis and the Social Bases of Southern Politics and St. Petersburg and the Florida Dream. 1888-1950, Arsenault has also written numerous articles in scholarly journals. He and Gary Mormino, USF Professor of History, have collaborated as co-editors for the \"Florida History and Culture\" series of monographs published by the University Press of Florida. He regularly lectures at conferences and professional meetings, and has appeared on ABC's Nightline, National Public Radio, and ABC Nightly News.","A lifelong supporter of civil rights and social justice, Arsenault has also taken leadership roles with organizations such as the American Civil Liberties Union, where he has served as a member of the Board of Directors for the Pinellas County Chapter since 1981, as Chapter President (1985-1997), and later as President of the state ACLU in 1998. In the 1920s, he learned to play the violin in Madrid before traveling to Paris to perform, as well as briefly in Budapest. Afterwards, he toured briefly as part of a musical trio across Europe and North Africa in the late 1920s and 1930s. In 1936 Bolet returned to Havana to found and organise CMZ, Cuba's first classical radio station. There, he acted as music director and conductor from 1937 to 1943, founding and running both the first radio symphony orchestra in Cuba. More than 300 concerts were broadcast on air in the first three years. He left Cuba in the late 1940s to coordinate orchestras across South America, such as the Ballet Espanol de Ana Maria. In 1951, he returned to Cuba and became music director of the Havana Philharmonic, a post he held until January 1959. Political conditions caused him to leave Cuba in February 1959, and he moved to Europe where he conducted a series of concerts in London and Germany, to later become director of the Bilbao Symphony, Spain. In 1968 was selected as musical director of the Long Beach Symphony, California, a position he held for ten years. He also acted as Professor of Music at the California State College at Fullerton and Guest Lecturer at the Institute of Lifetime Learning, Long Beach, California.
